Homewater removals of 4,030 1-SW and 5,532 M-SW fish led to an estimated 1983 spawning escapement only 35 percent of the target number of M-SW spawners. The forecast of 1984 homewater returns is 15,683 1-SW fish (8,050 more than the target escapement) and 10,410 M-SW salmon (10 fish more than the target escapement and hatchery broodstock requirements). In 1980, there were 2,103 metric tonnes harvested, 62% of which were large salmon. Insular Newfoundland contributed 1,250 metric tonnes or 59% of the total catch. There was a total of 5,609 fishermen with 21,919 units of gear licenced for the entire province. In 1981 there was a general decrease with a total harvest of 1,900 metric tonnes being landed; large salmon comprised 64% of the catch. Insular Newfoundland contributed 1,095 metric tonnes or 57% of the total provincial catch. Effort was reduced to 21,032 gear units licenced to 5,402 fishermen. The mean weights of small and large salmon were similar in both years.
