Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography and History of Vermont: Also the Constitution of the United States With Notes and Questions Many others expressed a similar opinion. But a new gener ation has arisen since that time. Many, who were children then, but are now parents, have expressed a strong wish that a' similar book might be placed in the hands of their children. Many years having passed since the last edition was published, the book has not been attainable. Though in its general geog raphy, natural scenery, climate, &c Vermont has not greatly changed, many other changes have taken' place, and many new facts have been brought to light, during the Geological Sur vey, construction of railroads, &c. It becomes necessary, there fore, either to modify the book, or to write a new one. The lat ter course is preferred, with regard to the geographical details; and to the history, many new facts are now added. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Geography of Massachusetts: For Families and Schools The subject is begun precisely at the wron end. If it is addressed to the understanding of the young earner, this arrangement seems to presume, that he will take a deeper interest in, and better comprehend the general features of the world, embracing its lar est mountains and rivers, and the characters of nations, 0 whose existence he has never before heard, than of the roads, hills, and rivers of his own neighborhood, and the boundaries of his own town, county, or state. Besides, he can get no adequate idea of the mag nitude of the largest mountains and rivers in the world, ex cept b comparing them with the mountains and rivers, which e has seen, and of which he has formed some defl nite idea. Book Geography and Geology of Vermont

Download or read book Geography and Geology of Vermont written by Zadock Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography and Geology of Vermont: With State and County Outline Maps, for the Use of Schools and Families The object of this little work, is to enable the youth of Vermont to acquire a competent knowledge of their own state. Most of the geographies used in our schools embrace so large a field that Vermont comes in for a very small share. The space in them usually allotted to a single state, affords room only for a few general facts, and the consequence is that, while they enable pupils to answer with promptitude, general questions relating to the geography of the world, they assist them very little in obtaining a knowledge of the individual state in which they reside. To supply in part, at least, this deficiency within our own state, and to enable our young people to grow up in a knowledge of our own institutions and of the objects and physical circumstances in the midst of which a kind Providence has placed them, is the design of this book. In the preparation of it, I have availed myself of the materials within my reach. I am well aware that deficiencies and errors will be found in it. But should it be thought worthy of an introduction into our schools, and another edition be demanded, I trust that superintendents and teachers of schools in the different sections of the state, will take sufficient interest in it, to induce them to furnish me with the means of supplying its deficiencies and correcting its errors; and with these improvements, it is my intention that there shall be a corresponding improvement in the mechanical execution of the book. It may be proper perhaps, to say a few words respecting that part of the book which relates to geology. Geology has not hitherto been much studied in our schools; and yet it is, undoubtedly, one of the most useful departments of general geography. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography of New England The Embargo Act of 1807 and the War of 1812 checked our commerce, and the con sequent lack of manufactured goods led merchants to invest their idle capital in manufacturing. Water rights were secured at the falls of our large rivers, and dams were built. Rows of factories and streets of tenements soon followed. Thus the cities of Lowell, Lawrence, Manchester, Lewiston, and Holyoke sprang into existence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
