Book excerpt: The main tasks of the local Government Commission for England are to examine the structure of local government in the English shire counties, and to make recommendations on the future structure, boundaries and electoral arrangements of local authorities. This report sets out the Commission's draft recommendations with a view to hearing local reactions from the people of Essex. Recommendations include the proposal that two unitary authorities should be created in the southern part of the county, and a two-tier system remain for the rest of Essex. A discussion of two alternative structures which the Commission considers viable is also included in the report.

Download or read book Spartan Victory written by Mark Francois and published by . This book was released on 2021-12 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spartan Victory is a dynamic, insider account of the "Battle for Brexit" in Parliament and the media, written by the MP who served as the Brexiteer's de-facto "Chief Whip", throughout the epic struggle to uphold the result of the 2016 Referendum. As such, it provides a unique perspective on arguably the most important event in British political history since the end of the Second World War. This work incorporates much never previously published material, including the highly secret Brexiteer Whipping Team - some of whom now serve in the current Cabinet - and who resisted the Government's so-called EU "Withdrawal Agreement" which was actually designed to do precisely the opposite. This candid, sometimes humorous account explains what was really at stake during this gruelling contest, to uphold the British people's decision to Leave the EU and how 28 Tory MPs, the so-called "Spartans" held out until the bitter end, in what ultimately became a battle to uphold the democratic principle itself. "If you voted for Brexit, you really ought to buy this book" - Jacob Rees-Mogg MP

Download or read book Battleground Chicago written by Frank Kusch and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1968 Democratic Convention, best known for police brutality against demonstrators, has been relegated to a dark place in American historical memory. Battleground Chicago ventures beyond the stereotypical image of rioting protestors and violent cops to reevaluate exactly how—and why—the police attacked antiwar activists at the convention. Working from interviews with eighty former Chicago police officers who were on the scene, Frank Kusch uncovers the other side of the story of ’68, deepening our understanding of a turbulent decade. “Frank Kusch’s compelling account of the clash between Mayor Richard Daley’s men in blue and anti-war rebels reveals why the 1960s was such a painful era for many Americans. . . . to his great credit, [Kusch] allows ‘the pigs’ to speak up for themselves.”—Michael Kazin “Kusch’s history of white Chicago policemen and the 1968 Democratic National Convention is a solid addition to a growing literature on the cultural sensibility and political perspective of the conservative white working class in the last third of the twentieth century.”—David Farber, Journal of American History
Download or read book Governing England written by Michael Kenny and published by Proceedings of the British Aca. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governing England examines the state of England's governance, identity and relationship with the other nations of the UK. It brings together academic experts on constitutional change, territorial politics, nationalism, political parties, public opinion, and local government both to explain thecurrent place of England within a changing United Kingdom, and to consider how the "English constitution" is likely to develop over the coming years. At a time when questions of territory and identity have grown increasingly politicised, Governing England offers a deeper academic analysis of how England and Englishness are changing. The central questions it addresses are whether, why, and with what consequences there has been a disentangling ofEngland from Britain within the institutions of the UK state, and of Englishness from Britishness at the level of culture and national identity. This volume includes competing interpretations of what has changed in terms of English nationhood.
