Book New Directions in Psychiatry

Download or read book New Directions in Psychiatry written by Maurizio Pompili and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on hot issues faced by clinicians in everyday clinical practice, and provides in-depth analyses of both met and unmet needs in the management of psychiatric disorders. It has been repeatedly shown that the needs of patients, relatives, the community at large and those of the governmental bodies only partially overlap. For instance, patients in their families are more concerned about quality of life, treatment, autonomy, and independent living; whereas governmental stakeholders are typically more concerned about relapse prevention and reduction of hospitalizations. As such, a volume bridging the gap between theoretical notions and practical understanding of patients’ untreated aspects of their psychiatric disorders is much needed. Instead of focusing on traditional descriptions of psychopathology and diagnostic criteria, the volume guides readers to core problems for each topic, taking into account new approaches in the classification of mental disorders as proposed by DSM-5. It elaborates on much-debated controversial problems such as the assessment and treatment of psychomotor agitation, and non-adherence to treatment that impacts on the psychiatric context. With its unique approach, this volume appeals to anyone with an interest in the field, including researchers, clinicians, and trainees.

Book New Directions for Mental Health Services Can Mandatory Treatment Be Therapeutic

Download or read book New Directions for Mental Health Services Can Mandatory Treatment Be Therapeutic written by Mark R. Munetz and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 1997-09-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing is more highly valued in America than individual freedom. In the mental health arena there has been a great debate over patients' rights to freedom and autonomy versus society's responsibility to treat individuals in need and to protect people from the dangerous behaviors that can accompany major mental illness. From the 1960s through the early 1980s commitment laws were rewritten to increase patients' individual freedom and autonomy. Some argue that the balance has shifted back, however, with a reemergence of coercive interventions, often in community settings. There is legitimate concern that these new coercive interventions have been poorly studied, that their effectiveness is largely unknown, and that they are being applied to increasingly large and disparate populations. This sourcebook provides the differing perspectives on mandatory treatment of mental health care consumers, their family members, and advocates of therapeutic jurisprudence. It also supplies data on the effectiveness of mandatory treatment in community-based systems of care and examines some of the more controversial aspects of mandatory treatment. This is the 75th issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Mental Health Services.

The Task Force is comprised of women health professionals who are aware of sexism in the mental health services provided by the State and have taken action to change the biased treatment of women.
