Book New Directions in Jewish Philosophy

Download or read book New Directions in Jewish Philosophy written by Aaron W. Hughes and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breaking with strictly historical or textual perspectives, this book explores Jewish philosophy as philosophy. Often regarded as too technical for Judaic studies and too religious for philosophy departments, Jewish philosophy has had an ambiguous position in the academy. These provocative essays propose new models for the study of Jewish philosophy that embrace wider intellectual arenas—including linguistics, poetics, aesthetics, and visual culture—as a path toward understanding the particular philosophic concerns of Judaism. As they reread classic Jewish texts, the essays articulate a new set of questions and demonstrate the vitality and originality of Jewish philosophy.

Book The Proverbs of Jesus

  • Author : Alan Winton
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 1990-01-01
  • ISBN : 0567517071
  • Pages : 243 pages

Download or read book The Proverbs of Jesus written by Alan Winton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Jesus a prophet of the eschatological Kingdom or a teacher of wisdom? These two characterizations of Jesus appear to be incompatible and, since the last century, the former has dominated our understanding of the Gospels at the expense of the latter. Proverbial sayings in the Synoptics have either been pressed into the service of eschatology-and have thus lost their character as wisdom-or have been disregarded as 'inauthentic', representing a later stage in the tradition. This book offers a critique of the method of historical reconstruction which leads to such conclusions. It also suggests an approach to the rhetoric or function of proverbial sayings, based on pragmatics, which develops the distinction between sense and force and offers some account of the rhetorical strategies involved in the use of proverbs in speech. A final chapter attempts to show how proverbial sayings might be given more significance in our understanding of Jesus' message through a reconsideration of the relationship between wisdom, eschatology and the Kingdom of God.

Book Gifts of the Dark Wood

  • Author : Rev. Eric Elnes
  • Publisher : Abingdon Press
  • Release : 2015-09-01
  • ISBN : 1426794142
  • Pages : 150 pages

Download or read book Gifts of the Dark Wood written by Rev. Eric Elnes and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you left the faith you used to have but don’t know what to move toward? When you can’t see the road ahead, do you feel lost and alone? Do you wish you had a group of companions willing to wander with you? Welcome to the Dark Wood. As you journey through the unknown, you may feel tempted, lost, and uncertain. Though commonly feared and avoided, these feelings of uncertainty can be your greatest assets on this journey because it is in uncertainty that we probe, question, and discover. According to the ancients, you don’t need to be a saint or spiritual master to experience profound awakening and live with God’s presence and guidance. You need only to wander. In clear and lucid prose that combines the heart of a mystic, the soul of a poet, and the mind of a biblical scholar, Dr. Eric Elnes demystifies the seven gifts bestowed in the Dark Wood: the gifts of uncertainty, emptiness, being thunderstruck, getting lost, temptation, disappearing, and the gift of misfits. This is a book for anyone who feels awkward in their search for God, anyone who seeks to find holiness amid their holy mess, and anyone who prefers practicality to piety when it comes to finding their place in this world.
