Book excerpt: This book is a result of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on New Directions for Intelligent Tutoring Systems, held in Sintra, Portugal, October 6-10, 1990. The main idea behind the workshop was to bring together scientists with different concerns about Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) in order to discuss the positive and negative aspects of the current architecture paradigm (expert module, student module, instructional module, and interface module) and, eventually, propose some modifications or radical changes to it. This was a consequence of the increasing malaise felt currently by researchers in the area of artificial intelligence and education and in particular by those concerned with ITS. One symptom of this state of affairs is the fact that people have started talking about Intelligent Learning Environ ments (lLE) instead of ITS. To understand the reasons for this situation we promoted the discussion of questions like: - To what extent do we need the technology of expert systems in ITS? Which other relevant AI techniques and methodologies are urgently needed? - Is ITS a tool for knowledge communication or is it rather a belief system? - How can the research already done on interactions among agents be utilized? - Is it possible to find a fonnal theory to describe and solve the current problems with ITS? The book contains the revised versions of the papers presented at the workshop. The new texts reflect the discussions that took place at the meeting.

Many of the authors have subsequently run other meetings funded by the Special Programme and have, or are in the process of, editing books which focus on particular topics. This book covers all the major themes in the area ranging from fundamental theoretical work to empirical studies of state of the art technological innovations. Tim O'Shea chaired the NATO Survey Group which planned the Programme and the subsequent Panel which disbursed funds in the first two years of the Programme. He would like to thank the other group and panel members, namely, Professor N Balacheff, Professor D Bjomer, Professor H Bouma, Professor P C Duchastel, Professor A Dias de Figueiredo, Dr D Jonassen and Professor T Liao. Justine Wise Polier (1903-1987) was educated at Bryn Mawr, Radcliffe, and Barnard. She earned her law degree from Yale Law School where she was editor of the Yale Law Journal. In 1935, she was appointed Justice of the Family Court where she sat for 38 years. Judge Polier took a leave from the bench in 1941 when she was appointed special advisor to Eleanor Roosevelt at the Office of Civilian Defense in Washington. She also served as Chairman of the Committee on Mental Health for New York. Judge Polier was a founder and president of the Wiltwyck School; vice president of the Citizens Committee for Children of N.Y.; vice president of the American Jewish Congress; Delegate to the White House Conferences on Children and on Education. Judge Polier was a member of the Institute of Judicial Administration, American Bar Association. She was on the editorial board of the International Juridical Association and was awarded the 1964 Isaac Ray Award by the American Psychiatric Association for "contributions to the improvement of the relations of Law and Psychiatry." Following her retirement from the bench, she served as the director of the Juvenile Judge division of the Children's Defense Fund. During her illustrious career, Judge Polier was the recipient of numerous awards including: the Citation for Distinguished Service to the City of New York, 1973; the Human Services Award from the New York and Bronx Mental Health Association, 1973; the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian Award from the Board of Directors of Wiltwyck School, 1975. Judge Polier also published numerous reports and several books including: Everyone's Children, Nobody's Child; Back to What Woodshed?; A View from the Bench; and The Rule of Law and the Role of Psychiatry.

This collection, with contributions from leading researchers in the field of artificial intelligence in education (AIED), constitutes an overview of the many challenging research problems that must be solved in order to build a truly intel- gent tutoring system (ITS). The book not only describes some of the approaches and techniques that have been explored to meet these challenges, but also some of the systems that have actually been built and deployed in this effort. As discussed in the Introduction (Chapter 1), the terms “AIED” and “ITS” are often used int- changeably, and there is a large overlap in the researchers devoted to exploring this common field. In this foreword, I will use the term “AIED” to refer to the - search area, and the term “ITS” to refer to the particular kind of system that AIED researchers build. It has often been said that AIED is “AI-complete” in that to produce a tutoring system as sophisticated and effective as a human tutor requires solving the entire gamut of artificial intelligence research (AI) problems.

In a global environment where other languages are increasing in importance in addition to recognized intemational standards (i. e., English and French), language learning is becoming more important for improved international relations. At the same time, recent advances in instructional technology make the promise of building intelligent tutoring systems in advanced technology laboratories to teach these language skills a reality in the near future. These tutoring systems, therefore, may help us foster improved methods for acquiring languages. As active language learners and instructional technology researchers, we felt an international meeting with similar individuals was needed to discuss how such advanced tutoring systems are to be designed and implemented. We held such a meeting, the results of which are presented in this volume. The purpose of this Advanced Workshop, sponsored by the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, was to bring together a multidisciplinary group of researchers who were active in the development of intelligent tutoring systems for foreign language learning. Participants came from computer science, computational linguistics, psychology, and foreign language learning. Washington, D.C. was selected for the Workshop site since it is Merryanna's home city, the capitol of the United States, and an international, multilingual community in its own right. Masoud agreed to the location (with a promise to be shown the White House!) and graciously volunteered to coordinate activities from the European side.

Those topics have ranged from general components of intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) (Learner Modeling, Instructional Management, Authoring Tools, Domain Modeling) to advanced elements (Assessment Methods, Team Tutoring, Self-Improving Systems, Data Visualization, Competency Based-Scenario Design). Our most recent previous volume included a series of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) Analyses on all the initial topics as well as overviews of ITSs in general and the Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT) software (Sottilare et al., 2012; Sottilare et al., 2017; Goldberg & Sinatra, 2023). Each book in the Design Recommendations for Intelligent Tutoring Systems series has been associated with an Expert Workshop on the same topic. These workshops are part of a cooperative agreement (W911NF18-2-0039) between US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Soldier Center and University of Memphis. One of the goals of the expert workshops is to learn more about ITS capabilities that are being developed, and how these approaches, as well as lessons learned, could enhance the GIFT software (GIFT is freely available at https://www.GIFTtutoring.org). Invited experts in industry, academia, and government discuss the expert workshop topic, their applicable work, and suggestions for improving GIFT in what is usually a two day event. Both the University of Memphis and GIFT Teams participate in the workshop, help to guide discussion, and ask questions that will provide insight into current challenges in GIFT. The expert workshop associated with this current book was held virtually in October 2022, and included presentations about both general approaches and specific applications to professional education in ITSs. Additionally, the University of Memphis team that participated in the workshop included Arthur C. Graesser, Xiangen Hu, Vasile Rus, and Jody Cockroft. The US Army DEVCOM Soldier Center team who participated in the workshop included Benjamin Goldberg, Gregory Goodwin, Anne M. Sinatra, Randall Spain, and Lisa N. Townsend. The current volume and the expert workshop that was associated with it, branched out in a new direction and rather than addressing specific components of an ITS or types of features/approaches that could be included in ITSs, it focused on how to apply an ITS for specific types of training. The specific focus was on ITSs for Professional Career Education. This topic area was selected, as in general, ITS research tends to be focused on K-12 or college education, and in many cases on domains such as algebra or physics. However, for the military, and for industry, trainees are adult learners and domains tend to be more active, applied, and experiential. This workshop provided an opportunity for discussion of specific examples of applied training that occurs with ITSs, as well as discussion of general approaches and considerations for applied professional education in ITSs.
