Book excerpt: Last year the Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC) and the Waterways Experiment Station incorporated the results from more than ten years of research and development into a new version of computer program HEC-6: 'Scour and Deposition in Rivers and Reservoirs' (HEC, 1977). Because of the extensive modifications made to HEC-6, an entirely new User's Manual was also prepared. HEC released a Beta Test Version of the program in the fall of 1989, for field testing. Public release of the new version of HEC-6 is scheduled for September 1990. This paper describes the present status of the program as of April 1990, the expanded capabilities, and the improved documentation to be included in the forthcoming release of computer program HEC-6. Book excerpt: Flood control and flood plain management investigations using spatial data management techniques are increasing in the Corps of Engineers. Pilot studies initiated in the mid-1970's were successful in consolidating analysis concepts, fostering the development of spatial data file creation and management technology and enhancing the consideration of existing and alternative future development patterns in Corps' planning studies. Over 30 studies using HEC-SAM, the Corps' spatial data management system, are now completed or underway. HEC-SAM was created through selective acquisition of commercial software, adaption of academic research products, and development by researchers at the Corps' Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC). The HEC role continues to be that of system developer and technology transfer agent. The evolution, present capabilities, and applications of HEC-SAM are described. Observations are offered on spatial technology development, implementation, and servicing. (Author).

Book excerpt: This paper overviews the general features of computer program 'HEC-5, Simulation of Flood Control and Conservation Systems', with emphasis on the capabilities of the most recent release of HEC-5, Version 7.2, dated March 1991. HEC-5 can simulate the essential features and operation goals and constraints of simple or complex systems with simulation intervals ranging from minutes to one month. Single event flood analysis and period of record conservation analysis may be accomplished with the model. Flood control analysis includes balanced system operation for downstream damage centers with consideration of forecasted local flows and hydrologic routing. In addition, induced surcharge operation based on spillway gate regulation schedules can be simulated. Hydropower analysis may include run-of-river, peaking, and pumped storage plants as well as system power operation. Water supply simulation can include reservoir and downstream flow requirements in addition to divers ions and return flows. Water Quality analysis can include simulation of temperature, dissolved oxygen, up to three conservative and up to three nonconservative constituents.
