Book New Netherland Connections

Download or read book New Netherland Connections written by Susanah Shaw Romney and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susanah Shaw Romney locates the foundations of the early modern Dutch empire in interpersonal transactions among women and men. As West India Company ships began sailing westward in the early seventeenth century, soldiers, sailors, and settlers drew on kin and social relationships to function within an Atlantic economy and the nascent colony of New Netherland. In the greater Hudson Valley, Dutch newcomers, Native American residents, and enslaved Africans wove a series of intimate networks that reached from the West India Company slave house on Manhattan, to the Haudenosaunee longhouses along the Mohawk River, to the inns and alleys of maritime Amsterdam. Using vivid stories culled from Dutch-language archives, Romney brings to the fore the essential role of women in forming and securing these relationships, and she reveals how a dense web of these intimate networks created imperial structures from the ground up. These structures were equally dependent on male and female labor and rested on small- and large-scale economic exchanges between people from all backgrounds. This work pioneers a new understanding of the development of early modern empire as arising out of personal ties.

Book Emerging Approaches in Design and New Connections With Nature

Download or read book Emerging Approaches in Design and New Connections With Nature written by Özdamar, Esen Gökçe and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-12-03 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today’s changing and transforming socio-economic, political, cultural, and technological paradigms, we encounter many methodologies, approaches, proposals, and practices in reconsidering the disappearing or emerging relations in the human/nonhuman-environment-nature interaction. These approaches, proposals, and practices range from new methods of urban gardening to biophilic design and augmented/immersive environments. However, these human-centric approaches, which only aim to meet their needs or emerge as technology-oriented replicas and representations of nature, lead to a departure from a holistic approach to the natural and artificial environment. Therefore, how can new and emerging approaches or methodologies draw a holistic framework for environmental health, sustainability, wellness, and co-existence between environments for all living beings? Emerging Approaches in Design and New Connections With Nature covers a variety of topics related to the intersection between nature, environment, and ways of living and provides a comprehensive guide to biophilic design and the idea of design and nature, including benefits, theories, and effects. Covering topics such as biophilic design and sustainability, soundscapes and landscapes, and urban environments and design, it is ideal for architects, designers, urban planners, landscape designers, policymakers, engineers, interior designers, practitioners, students, academicians, and researchers.

Book The Israeli Connection

Download or read book The Israeli Connection written by Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 1987 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author explains how Israel has become the arms dealer and military trainer of last resort, for everyone from Guatemala's murderous military to Mobutu in Africa and the Shah of Iran. It is, above all, in his eye-opening look at Israel's secret alliance with South Africa that Beit-Hallahmi illustrates the tragic situation his increasingly isolated nation faces today. He suggests surprising parallels between the way South Aftricans view blacks and the way Israelis view Palestinians, and in detailing the extensive ties--from nuclear-weapon sharing to military aid, trade, and tourism--he explores what this policy means for Israel.

Book New Media Development and Globalization Making Connections in the Global South

Download or read book New Media Development and Globalization Making Connections in the Global South written by Don Slater and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New media, development and globalization are the key terms through which the future is being imagined and performed in governance, development initiatives and public and political discourse. Yet these authoritative terms have arisen within particular cultural and ideological contexts. In using them, we risk promoting over-generalized and seemingly unchallengeable frameworks for action and knowledge production which can blind us to the complex global patterns and promise of social reality. This compelling book forces us to look at these terms afresh. Drawing on more than ten years of ethnographic fieldwork in Latin America, West Africa and South Asia, Don Slater seeks to challenge these terms as voicing specific northern narratives rather than universal truths, and to see them from the perspective of southern people and communities who are equally concerned to understand new machines for communication, new models of social change and new maps of social connection. The central question the book poses is: how we can democratize the ways we think and practise new media, development and globalization, opening these terms to dialogue and challenge within North-South relations? Rooted in sociological debates, New Media, Development and Globalization will also be a provocative contribution to media and cultural studies, studies of digital culture, development studies, geography and anthropology.
