Book Microwave and Millimetre Wave Design for Wireless Communications

Download or read book Microwave and Millimetre Wave Design for Wireless Communications written by Ian Robertson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-06-29 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a full range of contemporary techniques for the design of transmitters and receivers for communications systems operating in the range from 1 through to 300 GHz. In this frequency range there is a wide range of technologies that need to be employed, with silicon ICs at the core but, compared with other electronics systems, a much greater use of more specialist devices and components for high performance – for example, high Q-factor/low loss and good power efficiency. Many text books do, of course, cover these topics but what makes this book timely is the rapid adoption of millimetre-waves (frequencies from 30 to 300 GHz) for a wide range of consumer applications such as wireless high definition TV, “5G” Gigabit mobile internet systems and automotive radars. It has taken many years to develop low-cost technologies for suitable transmitters and receivers, so previously these frequencies have been employed only in expensive military and space applications. The book will cover these modern technologies, with the follow topics covered; transmitters and receivers, lumped element filters, tranmission lines and S-parameters, RF MEMS, RFICs and MMICs, and many others. In addition, the book includes extensive line diagrams to illustrate circuit diagrams and block diagrams of systems, including diagrams and photographs showing how circuits are implemented practically. Furthermore, case studies are also included to explain the salient features of a range of important wireless communications systems. The book is accompanied with suitable design examples and exercises based on the Advanced Design System – the industry leading CAD tool for wireless design. More importantly, the authors have been working with Keysight Technologies on a learning & teaching initiative which is designed to promote access to industry-standard EDA tools such as ADS. Through its University Educational Support Program, Keysight offers students the opportunity to request a student license, backed up with extensive classroom materials and support resources. This culminates with students having the chance to demonstrate their RF/MW design and measurement expertise through the Keysight RF & Microwave Industry-Ready Student Certification Program. www.keysight.com/find/eesof-university www.keysight.com/find/eesof-student-certification

Book Investigation of Millimetre Wave Generation by Stimulated Brillouin Scattering for Radio Over Fibre Applications

Download or read book Investigation of Millimetre Wave Generation by Stimulated Brillouin Scattering for Radio Over Fibre Applications written by Markus Junker and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2008 in the subject Engineering - Communication Technology, Dublin Institute of Technology, 252 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The rising demand for greater bandwidth and increased flexibility in modern telecommunication systems has lead to increased research activities in the field of Millimetre Wave-Photonics. The combination of an optical access network and the radio propagation of high data-rate signals provides a solution to meet these demands. Such structures are also known as Radio Over Fibre systems. They implement the optical Millimetre Wave generation in a central station and the transmission of radio waves via a remote antenna unit to the radio cell. The expected data rate is very high, due to the fact that both the optical and the radio-link provide a large transmission bandwidth. This dissertation concerns the investigation of a new and simple method for the flexible generation of Millimetre Waves for application in Radio Over Fibre systems. The method is based on the heterodyne detection of two optical waves in a photo detector. By externally amplitude modulating the optical wave, different sidebands are generated. Two of these sidebands are selected and amplified by the non-linear effect of stimulated Brillouin scattering. As a gain medium, a standard single mode fibre is used. According to the theoretical investigation, very good carrier performances are possible with this method, and a computer simulation shows little degradation to the signals during their propagation in the system. The measured results are in strong agreement with the theoretical analysis. Experimental results show that the system can be fully utilised as a Radio Over Fibre system. The thesis is divided into five main parts: Introduction - Theory - Simulation - Experiment - Conclusion. In the Introduction, an overview of the current methods of Millimetre Wave generation, Radio Over Fibre and the nonlinear ef

Book Multi Chip Module MCM Design for Millimeter wave Applications

Download or read book Multi Chip Module MCM Design for Millimeter wave Applications written by Ghulam Mehdi and published by . This book was released on 2018-10 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advancement in the era of monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMIC) technology, the trend for realization of radio systems is shifting towards millimeter-wave (mmW) frequencies. The obvious advantages at mmW bands are higher bandwidth, fine spatial resolution and producibility of miniaturized radio systems with high level integration. The wide spectrum of applications at mmW frequencies encompasses various applications such as satellite communication, radar systems, remote sensing, communication data links etc. The MMIC technology enables the fabrication of miniaturized, low-cost, high-performance and highly reliable mmW radio systems. However, due to the scale downsizing of the circuits proportional to the wavelength, the design of mmW multi-chips module (MCM) is challenging. One of the emerging applications in mmW bands is passive imager for security screening purposes. Such imagers are deployed for detection of the concealed hazardous objects on human body and contraband items. The 2-D synthetic aperture interferometric technique is being extensively employed in passive imaging systems due to its distinct features such as larger field of view (FOV) and high imaging rate. In the first part of this book, design and development of Ka-band MCM receivers at 34 GHz is presented. The receiver employs single-stage heterodyne architecture at 2 GHz intermediate frequency (IF). The complete MCM is realized on a single substrate except for the IF and power distribution section. This facilitates seamless integration, ease of manufacturing and results in a cost effective solution for mass production of such receivers. Further, a two-layer planar technology is adopted for compact realization. Experimental results of the front-end module fabricated with laser structuring are presented as well. Presence of Foreign object debris (FOD) at airport runways is an immense threat to flight safety. Such objects may cause potential damage to the aircraft especially during the critical phases like take off and landing. In the second part of the book, a capability demonstration model for a Ka-band FOD detection sensor employing multi-layer system-on-substrate (SoS) approach is presented. The concept of multi-layer system-on-substrate is introduced. The frequency modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) front-end transceiver and the integrated transmit and receive antennas are realized in multi-layer configuration. The front-end transceiver is mainly designed employing substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) circuits on low-cost 12 mil thick R4003C substrate. The front-end transceiver comprises of MMICs and passive structures such as SIW band-pass filters, SIW Wilkinson power divider and SIW-to-microstrip transitions. In order to couple two SIW substrate layers with different thicknesses, a coaxial bead is introduced for low-loss coupling between the two channels. Further, the design of a planar travelling-wave type slot array antenna in SIW technology is presented. Unlike conventional coaxial matched loads used in one of the reported SIW traveling-wave linear slot array, a resistive match is introduced for termination of such antenna in SIW technology. A virtually grounded thin film resistor (TFR) is employed for array termination. An 8x8 array is designed with antenna feed network. Two-layer topology is adopted for compact realization and this mitigates the unwanted radiations from the feed network. The whole integrated antenna is simulated in Ansoft HFSS®. The proposed approach considerably reduces the cost and weight of the antenna while the conformability of the antenna is retained as well. The antenna can be integrated with rest of the planar hardware of a millimeter-wave system. The proposed antenna can be used for a variety of mmW broadband commercial applications. The simulation results of the proposed antenna and front-end components are presented.

Book Micromachined Circuits and Devices

Download or read book Micromachined Circuits and Devices written by Shiban Kishen Koul and published by Springer. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the design of different switching and resonant devices using the present state-of-the-art radio frequency (RF) micromachining (MEMS) technology. Different topologies of MEMS switches have been discussed considering optimum performances over microwave to millimeter wave frequency range. Wide varieties of micromachined switching networks starting from single-pole-double-throw (SPDT) to single-pole-fourteen-throw (SP14T) are discussed utilizing vertical and lateral actuation movements of the switch. Different transduction mechanisms of micromachined resonators are highlighted that includes capacitive, piezoelectric, and piezoresistive types. The book provides major design guidelines for the development of MEMS-based digital phase shifters, tunable filters, and antennas with extensive measurement data. Apart from the radio frequency (RF) requirements, an extensive guideline is given for the improvement of the reliability of micromachined switches and digital phase shifters where multiple switches are operating simultaneously. It takes multiple iterations and extensive characterizations to conclude with a reliable MEMS digital phase shifter, and these aspects are given one of the prime attentions in this book. Detailed performance analysis of metamaterial inspired MEMS switches is then discussed for application in millimeter wave frequency bands up to about 170 GHz. The book concludes with future research activities of RF MEMS technology and its potential in space, defense, sensors, and biomedical applications.
