Download or read book Glycoproteins II written by J. Montreuil and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-12-08 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part II of this excellent work covers proteoglycans and mucins and deals with many more examples of glycoprotein function. It also covers glycoproteins from four more species (slime mold, snails, fish, batracians). The content of the volume is very comprehensive in that most contributors are focussed on discussing, in depth, the wealth of most recent advances in their field, referring to previous reviews of older work for background information. This method effectively produces a very wide subject coverage in a smaller number of chapters/volumes. The volume is an important information source for all glycobiologist researchers (senior investigators, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students), and as a good, comprehensive, reference text for scientists working in the life sciences.

Book Glycoproteins and Disease

Download or read book Glycoproteins and Disease written by J. Montreuil and published by . This book was released on 1996-09-27 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elucidation during the latter half of the 20th century of the mechanisms by which information flows from nucleic acids to proteins has completely changed the face of biological research. Many diseases are caused by abnormalities in control mechanisms which are not immediately essential for life itself but which maintain the normal social behavior of differentiated cells in multicellular organisms. The complex sugar chains of glycoproteins and glycolipids are believed to play important roles in the control of cellular functions and in recognition between the cell and its cellular and fluid environment. Investigations into the abnormalities of complex sugar chain assembly are expected to yield an important new underatanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of human diseases. This volume discusses several representative diseases which emphasize the current status of glycopathology, and will stimulate further research in this exciting field.

Book Protein Glycosylation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roslyn M. Bill
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461549396
  • Pages : 517 pages

Download or read book Protein Glycosylation written by Roslyn M. Bill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protein Glycosylation provides clear, up-to-date, and integrated coverage of key topics in this field. Particular emphasis is placed on the biosynthetic pathways that result in a wide variety of identified protein-bound oligosaccharides. Protein Glycosylation begins with an overview of the chemical structures of mono- and oligosaccharides, to provide a scientific basis for the later chapters. The book includes discussions on the purification, function, and enzyme kinetics of selected glycosidases and glycotransferases, as well as a review of the roles of oligosaccharides in glycoprotein function and the in vivo role of glycoproteins themselves. Finally, the in vitro synthesis of glycoproteins is presented, together with future directions in glycobiology. Protein Glycosylation serves as an excellent text for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students as well as a reference for those scientists whose training is not in glycobiology but who are moving into this field.

Book Glycobiology Protocols

  • Author : Inka Brockhausen
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

  • ISBN : 1597451673
  • Pages : 388 pages

Download or read book Glycobiology Protocols written by Inka Brockhausen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-04 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glycobiology involves studies of complex carbohydrates and posttrans- tional modifications of proteins, and has become an important interdiscip- nary field encompassing chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physiology, and pathology. Although initial research was directed toward elucidation of the different carbohydrate structures and the enzymes synthesizing them, the field has now moved toward identifying the functions of carbohydrates. The pro- cols described in Glycobiology Protocols form a solid basis for investigations of glycan functions in health and disease. The cloning of many of the genes participating in glycosylation processes has helped to enhance our knowledge of how glycosylation is controlled, but has also added another dimension of complexity to the great heterogeneous variety of the structures of the oligos- charides of glycoproteins, proteoglycans, and glycolipids. A family of similar enzyme proteins exists for each glycosylation step. Glycosyltransferases are extremely specific for both the nucleotide sugar donor and the acceptor s- strate, but many other factors control sugar transfer, including the locali- tion and topology of enzymes, cofactors, possible chaperone proteins, and the availability of sugar acceptor substrates. The analysis of the intracellular organization of glycosylation and of the factors controlling the activities of the participating enzymes in the cell are important areas that need more research efforts. Another challenge for future research is to understand the glycodynamics of a cell, that is, how the cell responds to stimuli leading to biological and pathological changes in terms of alterations in glycosylation, and how this affects the biology of the cell.
