Book Protein Lipid Interactions

Download or read book Protein Lipid Interactions written by Anthony Watts and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1993-10-08 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protein-lipid interactions as a field of study is now a mature area, and this volume of New Comprehensive Biochemistry has been published with two objectives in mind. Firstly, to look to the future, and try to envisage how the subject may develop in the near to medium future. Secondly, to present contrasting or complementary views on the same system. For example, the acetylcholine receptor is discussed from a predominantly structural aspect by Barrantes, and from the kinetic standpoint by Rankin, et al. The volume not only gives an update on specific aspects of the field, but also shows the way in which the phenomenon of protein-lipid interactions is now seemingly infiltrating many areas of biomembrane research, from recombinant DNA studies, protein insertion and assembly and reconstitution considerations to structural studies of membrane proteins.

Book excerpt: Biological membranes have long been identified as key elements in a wide variety of cellular processes including cell defense communication, photosynthesis, signal transduction, and motility; thus they emerge as primary targets in both basic and applied research. This book brings together in a single volume the most recent views of experts in the area of protein–lipid interactions, providing an overview of the advances that have been achieved in the field in recent years, from very basic aspects to specialized technological applications. Topics include the application of X-ray and neutron diffraction, infrared and fluorescence spectroscopy, and high-resolution NMR to the understanding of the specific interactions between lipids and proteins within biological membranes, their structural relationships, and the implications for the biological functions that they mediate. Also covered in this volume are the insertion of proteins and peptides into the membrane and the concomitant formation of definite lipid domains within the membrane.

Book Biological Membranes Structure Biogenesis and Dynamics

Download or read book Biological Membranes Structure Biogenesis and Dynamics written by Jos A.F. Op den Kamp and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Study Institute on "Structure, Biogenesis and Dynamics of Biological Membranes, held in Cargese from June 14-26, 1993, has been dealing with four major topics in membrane biochemistry today: lipid dynamics and lipid-protein interactions, protein translocation and insertion, intracellular traffic aud protein structure and folding. The lecturers discussed these topics starting from several disciplines, including biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, and biophysics. This wayan interdisciplinary and very inte~sting view on biological membrane systems was obtained. At first an extensive overview of -mainly biophysical -techniques which can be used to study dynamic processes in membranes was presented. Sophisticated approaches such as ESR and NMR have been applied succesfully to unravel details of specific lipid-protein interactions. x ray analysis provides detailed structural information of several proteins and the possible implications for protein functions. Information obtained this way is complemented by studies on mechanisms and kinetics of protein folding. The latter information is indispensable when discussing protein translocation and insertion: proces:;es in which folding and unfolding play essential roles. Extensive insight was offered in the complicated machinery of phospholipid biosynthesis. In particular, the application of sophisticated genetic techniques has allowed a better understanding of the mechanisms regulating the synthetic machinery and detailed studies on a variety of mutants, lacking one or more of the essential enzymes, have resulted in the beginning of a bL!:

Download or read book Biological Membranes written by Kenneth M. Merz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interface between a living cell and the surrounding world plays a critical role in numerous complex biological processes. Sperm/egg fusion, virus/cell fusion, exocytosis, endocytosis, and ion permeation are a few examples of processes involving membranes. In recent years, powerful tools such as X-ray crystal lography, electron microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and infra-red and Raman spectroscopy have been developed to characterize the structure and dy namics of biomembranes. Despite this progress, many of the factors responsible for the function of biomembranes are still not well understood. The membrane is a very complicated supramolecular liquid-crystalline structure that is largely composed of lipids, forming a bilayer, to which proteins and other biomolecules are anchored. Often, the lipid bilayer environment is pictured as a hydropho bic structureless slab providing a thermodynamic driving force to partition the amino acids of a membrane protein according to their solubility. However, much of the molecular complexity of the phospholipid bilayer environment is ignored in such a simplified view. It is likely that the atomic details of the polar head group region and the transition from the bulk water to the hydrophobic core of the membrane are important. An understanding of the factors responsible for the function of biomembranes thus requires a better characterization at the molec ular level of how proteins interact with lipid molecules, of how lipids affect protein structure and of how lipid molecules might regulate protein function.

Book New Developments in Lipid Protein Interactions and Receptor Function

Download or read book New Developments in Lipid Protein Interactions and Receptor Function written by K.W.A. Wirtz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute on "New Developments in Lipid-Protein Interactions and Receptor Function" was held on the Island of Spetsai, Greece, from August 16-27, 1992. This Institute was organized to bring together researchers in the field of membrane organization and dynamics with those actively involved in studies on receptor function, signal transduction mechanisms and gene regulation. 2 Presentations and discussions focussed on the regulation of intracellular Ca +-levels, on the second messengers derived from inositol lipids and on the specific phospholipase C isozymes involved in these processes. A major focus was on G-proteins and the effect of lipid anchors on their function. These principles of regulation were further discussed in the context of receptors for acetylcholine, lysophosphatidic acid and low-density lipoproteins. In addition, various aspects of the genomic regulation of cell growth and differentiation by transcription factors were presented. These topics were put into perspective by discussing the most recent developments in lipid-protein interactions, protein insertion into membranes, membrane lipid organization and lipid dynamics as mediated by phospholipid transfer proteins. This book presents the content of the major lectures and a selection of the most relevant of the most important topics posters. These proceedings offer a comprehensive account presented during the course of the Institute. The book is intended to make these proceedings accessible to a large audience.

Book Bioradicals Detected by Esr Spectroscopy

Download or read book Bioradicals Detected by Esr Spectroscopy written by Hiroaki Ohya-Nishiguchi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-11-29 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the historical background as well as the up-to-date developments in, and guidelines for, bioradicals and ESR research. Bioradicals Detected by ESR Spectroscopy is a newly coined term which encompasses paramagnetic species in biological systems, such as active oxygen radicals and transition metal ions. Research on the structures and functions of bioradicals have been attracting growing attention in the biological sciences, resulting in an increasing demand for comprehensive studies which allow researchers from many fields to understand the true importance of these species. ESR spectroscopy is of great interest to interdisciplinary research and is applied in many fields, ranging from physics and chemistry to biology and medicine. New ESR technologies of multiquantum ESR, STM-ESR and open-space ESR, several ESR imaging techniques, spin trapping and new methods in in vivo spin trapping are all described and discussed in this volume. In addition, it demonstrates the applications of ESR in food and medical sciences, i.e., the estimation and characterization of the antioxidant ability of foods and food components and the elucidation of the underlying chemical mechanisms.
