Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No person involved in so much history received so little attention as the late Robert C. Byrd, the longest-serving U.S. senator. In The Last Great Senator, David A. Corbin examines ByrdÆs complex and fascinating relationships with eleven presidents of the United States, from Eisenhower to Obama. Furthermore, Byrd had an impact on nearly every significant event of the last half century, including the Cold War, the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, KennedyÆs New Frontier, the Watergate scandal, the Reagan Revolution, the impeachment of President Clinton, and the Iraq War. Holding several Senate records, Byrd also cast more votes than any other U.S. senator. In his sweeping portrait of this eloquent and persuasive manÆs epic life and career, Corbin describes Senator ByrdÆs humble background in the coalfields of southern West Virginia (including his brief membership in the Ku Klux Klan). He covers ByrdÆs encounters and personal relationship with each president and his effect on events during their administrations. Additionally, the book discusses ByrdÆs interactions with other notable senators, including Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Russell, Mike Mansfield, and especially Robert and Edward Kennedy. Going beyond the boundaries of West Virginia and Capitol Hill, The Last Great Senator presents Byrd in a larger historical context, where he rose to the height of power in America.

She hates that her dearest friends (her father and her grandmother) are off board her ship, hates she's in love with her only surviving friend, Andrew Patterson who rather keeps to the memories of his dead girlfriend. But comes Ralph Carter, a wealthy young business man who pours out roses. But . . . Ingrid MacCabee is a sweet blond, a successful play maker. Only she falls well madly in an obsession. She damns herself for the special eyes she has for a no-nice guy, an artist. She would not look at Ray Adams, a handsome, half-American half-Spanish talent who would die for her. Her scalding attraction- the guy in person, Jason Sands, the beastliest Casanova in her college. Then jumps in is Maureen de Crapeau, another malicious character, an awesome play maker who would do anything to put Ingrid in the darkest dark. Out of the family's mansion comes their friends. But they are unfortunately no better than the MacCabees.

Book Soviet Decision Making in Practice

Download or read book Soviet Decision Making in Practice written by Yaacov Ro'i and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soviet Union executed an apparent about-face in its traditional anti-Zionist position when the Palestine issue came before the United Nations in 1947. In addition to political support at the UN from May 1947 to May 1949, important military assistance was rendered to the Jewish Palestinian Yishuv throughout 1948 by the Eastern bloc. Toward the end of that year, however, indications of change became apparent, and the Soviet Union began criticizing Israel. This book studies the USSR's attitude toward the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine in the immediate post-World War II period and toward Israel in the first years of its existence, and it investigates the complex of considerations that caused the initial apparent reversal of traditional Soviet anti-Zionism. The author contends that this support for Israel contributed considerably to the evoking of Soviet Jewry's enthusiastic reaction to the establishment of the State. But this very reaction resulted in turn in Moscow changing its tactics again, since it could not allow its Jewish citizens to identify with a state outside the Soviet Union and the Communist orbit. During the few years after the Israeli War for Independence, in which the Arab-Israeli conflict was relatively low key, the USSR adopted a position of seeming neutrality between two sides—while quietly wooing the Arab nations. Ro'i examines how toward the end of the Stalin period the Jewish problem again intervened with the infamous' 'Doctor's Plot," and how early in 1953 the Soviet Union severed diplomatic relations with Israel. One year later the USSR cast its first two pro-Arab vetoes in the UN Security Council, and from this point on Soviet-Israeli relations openly became a function of the increasingly cordial Soviet friendship with the Arab world.
