Book New Bilateralism in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book New Bilateralism in the Asia Pacific written by Peter Lloyd and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews recent changes in the geographic pattern of regional trading agreements (RTAs), focusing on examples from the Asia-Pacific area. The general pattern is one of new bilateral agreements combined with a trend towards continentalism. The new trend towards bilateralism can be explained largely by a fear of countries being excluded from their major markets as other countries secure preferential and superior access to these markets. This pattern is creating many intersections between RTAs with consequential multi-tiered preferences and multiple systems of trade rules. Viewed dynamically, however, this pattern may have positive effects on world trade. It mitigates the effects of large continental RTAs and may lead to coalescence or enlargement of RTAs. The paper reviews models which ask the important question as to whether this process will progress all the way to free trade for the world economy.

Book Bilateral Trade Agreements in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book Bilateral Trade Agreements in the Asia Pacific written by Vinod Aggarwal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asia-Pacific region has witnessed a rapid rise in bilateral preferential trade agreements at the beginning of the twenty-first century. This trend could have potentially dramatic effects on the trading patterns of countries in the transpacific region and beyond. Some argue that these accords will spur multilateral negotiations, while others believe that they will irreparably damage the trading system. Bilateral Trade Agreements in the Asia-Pacific examines the underlying political and economic factors driving these accords, based on a novel theoretical framework. Experts then provide overviews of political and economic trends in the region as well as detailed analysis of the trade strategies of Japan, China, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States and Mexico. By systematically evaluating and assessing the driving forces underlying the turn to bilateral trade agreements in the Asia-Pacific, this book provides the first comprehensive analysis of this crucial phenomenon. Growing numbers of countries both in the region and elsewhere in the world are now considering further negotiation of bilateral trade accords. Understanding how these arrangements will fit or conflict with existing institutions in the Asia-Pacific and the WTO makes this book imperative reading for policy-makers and scholars.

Book Bilateralism Multilateralism and Asia Pacific Security

Download or read book Bilateralism Multilateralism and Asia Pacific Security written by William T. Tow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many scholars of international relations in Asia regard bilateralism and multilateralism as alternative and mutually exclusive approaches to security co-operation. They argue that multilateral associations such as ASEAN will eventually replace the system of bilateral alliances which were the predominant form of U.S. security co-operation with Asia-Pacific allies during the Cold War. Yet these bilateral alliances continue to be the primary means of the United States’ strategic engagement with the region. This book contends that bilateralism and multilateralism are not mutually exclusive, and that bilateralism is likely to continue strong even as multilateralism strengthens. It explores a wide range of issues connected with this question. It discusses how US bilateral alliances have been reinvigorated in recent years, examines how bilateral and multilateral approaches to specific problems can work alongside each other, and concludes by considering how patterns of international security are likely to develop in the region in future.

Book New Regional Trading Arrangements in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book New Regional Trading Arrangements in the Asia Pacific written by Robert Scollay and published by Peterson Institute. This book was released on 2001 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the choices the Asia-Pacific community will face if it proceeds further down the path of developing preferential regional trading arrangements? Fragmentation of the region into preferential trading arrangements on a bilateral or subregional basis promises relatively little economic gain and considerable risk of increased trade conflict. Larger preferential trading blocs, spanning the whole of East Asia, the Western Pacific, or the APEC membership, offer greater potential economic benefits but also face formidable political obstacles. In this study, Scollay and Gilbert weigh the economic consequences of the increased use of preferential trading arrangements in the Asia-Pacific region, whether these develop on the basis of trans-Pacific cooperation or solely within the East Asian or Western Pacific sub-regions. They evaluate the economic effects of both the existing proposals for new bilateral and multilateral agreements and of more far-reaching developments involving the creation of a substantial trading bloc or blocs in the region. Comparisons between the economic effects of establishing such bloc(s) in the region and the effects of achieving APEC's Bogor goals on the basis of "open regionalism" suggest that the latter approach continues to offer a worthwhile alternative. The study demonstrates that the benefits of global free trade dominate those available from establishment of any combination of major blocs or from APEC's "open regionalism".

Book New Free Trade Agreements in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book New Free Trade Agreements in the Asia Pacific written by Christopher M. Dent and published by Palgrave MacMillan. This book was released on 2006-07-11 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent proliferation of free trade agreements (FTAs) in the Asia-Pacific is arguably the most important development in the region's international trade agreements in recent years. This book presents a comprehensive study of the main causes, consequences and nature of the Asia-Pacific's new FTA trend, as well as its implications for the global economy. It explores the FTA policies of the region's trade powers and offers new conceptual and theoretical perspectives on the relationship between economic bilateralism and regionalism, in particular whether intensifying FTA bilateralism may lead to the development of 'lattice regionalism' in the Asia-Pacific.

Download or read book Asia s New Multilateralism written by Michael J. Green and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, stability in Asia has relied on America's bilateral alliances with Japan, Australia, and the Republic of Korea. Yet in recent years, emergent and more active multilateral forums--such as the Six-Party Talks on North Korea and the East Asia Summit--have taken precedence, engendering both cooperation and competition while reflecting the local concerns of the region. Some are concerned that this process is moving toward less-inclusive, bloc-based "talking shops" and that the future direction and success of these arrangements, along with their implications for global and regional security and prosperity, remain unclear. The fifteen contributors to this volume, all leading scholars in the field, provide national perspectives on regional institutional architecture and their functional challenges. They illuminate areas of cooperation that will move the region toward substantive collaboration, convergence of norms, and strengthened domestic institutions. They also highlight the degree to which institution building in Asia--a region composed of liberal democracies, authoritarian regimes, and anachronistic dictatorships--has become an arena for competition among major powers and conflicting norms, and assess the future shape of Asian security architecture.

Book Intellectual Property and Free Trade Agreements in the Asia Pacific Region

Download or read book Intellectual Property and Free Trade Agreements in the Asia Pacific Region written by Christoph Antons and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is highly topical. The shift from the multilateral WTO negotiations to bilateral and regional Free Trade Agreements has been going on for some time, but it is bound to accelerate after the WTO Doha round of negotiations is now widely regarded as a failure. However, there is a particular regional angle to this topic as well. After concluding that further progress in the Doha round was unlikely, Pacific Rim nations recently have progressed with the negotiations of a greatly expanded Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement that includes industrialised economies and developed countries such as the United States, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, recently emerged economies such as Singapore, but also several developing countries in Asia and Latin America such as Malaysia and Vietnam. US and EU led efforts to conclude FTAs with Asia-Pacific nations are also bound to accelerate again, after a temporary slowdown in the negotiations following the change of government in the United States and the expiry of the US President’s fast-track negotiation authority. The book will provide an assessment of these dynamics in the world’s fastest growing region. It will look at the IP chapters from a legal perspective, but also put the developments into a socio-economic and political context. Many agreements in fact are concluded because of this context rather than for purely economic reasons or to achieve progress in fields like IP law. The structure of the book follows an outline that groups countries into interest alliances according to their respective IP priorities. This ranges from the driving forces of the EU, US and Japan, via Asia-Pacific resource-rich but IP poor economies such as Australia and New Zealand, recently emerged economies with strong IP systems such as Singapore and Korea to leading developing countries such as China and India and ‘second tier industrializing economies’ such as Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Book Asia Pacific Economic and Security Co operation

Download or read book Asia Pacific Economic and Security Co operation written by C. Dent and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2003-10-24 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection examines new developments in economic and security co-operation in the Asia-Pacific in relation to two recent 'shock' events that have significantly impacted upon the region, these being the 1997/98 East Asian financial crisis and the September 11 attacks on the United States. These are examined through three 'prime dimensions' of analysis, namely: the tension between the 'post-shock' forces of 'imperative co-operation' and the counter-forces of Asia-Pacific 'complex diversity'; the growing conflation between economic and security issues - or the 'economics-security nexus' - in Asia-Pacific international relations; the relationship between the Asia-Pacific's new economic and security bilateralism and regional-level forms of co-operation, integration and governance.
