Book excerpt: With the leading of the Holy Spirit, Tim has studied the Scriptures to find biblical truths and instructions to share with both new believers desiring to turn from worldly pursuits and begin walking with Christ and mature Christians who seek help in recovering from crises in their life. Using a progressive format of steps similar to those introduced in twelve-step recovery programs, Tim shows how Scripture instructs us to see ourselves, the process through which God draws us to Himself, and the spiritual application of the Word of God in developing a solid Christian foundation for moving forward. Drawing from Scripture passages from dozens of books in both the Old and New Testaments, Tim points out Gods desired relationship with humans and how His Word gives us a blueprint for living the life that He desires for us. At the end of each chapter, a series of questions is presented intended to help readers reflect on their own views of scriptural teachings and their attitudes and perceptions of God and living a Christian life.

Book Abraham s Silence

  • Author : J. Richard Middleton
  • Publisher : Baker Academic
  • Release : 2021-11-16
  • ISBN : 1493430882
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Abraham s Silence written by J. Richard Middleton and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is traditional to think we should praise Abraham for his willingness to sacrifice his son as proof of his love for God. But have we misread the point of the story? Is it possible that a careful reading of Genesis 22 could reveal that God was not pleased with Abraham's silent obedience? Widely respected biblical theologian, creative thinker, and public speaker J. Richard Middleton suggests we have misread and misapplied the story of the binding of Isaac and shows that God desires something other than silent obedience in difficult times. Middleton focuses on the ethical and theological problem of Abraham's silence and explores the rich biblical tradition of vigorous prayer, including the lament psalms, as a resource for faith. Middleton also examines the book of Job in terms of God validating Job's lament as "right speech," showing how the vocal Job provides an alternative to the silent Abraham. This book provides a fresh interpretation of Genesis 22 and reinforces the church's resurgent interest in lament as an appropriate response to God.

Book Abraham Called by God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Witness Lee
  • Publisher : Living Stream Ministry
  • Release : 2024-01-19
  • ISBN : 1536036714
  • Pages : 383 pages

Download or read book Abraham Called by God written by Witness Lee and published by Living Stream Ministry. This book was released on 2024-01-19 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abraham was the same as we are today. He never dreamed of being called by God. Suddenly, while he and his relatives were in Chaldea worshipping other gods, the God of glory appeared to him. This appearing was a great attraction, enabling him to come out of his fallen background and accept God's calling. Although Abraham answered God's call, he did not do so immediately nor absolutely. Although he learned to live by faith, he had serious failures along the way. He followed God in a way not unlike us all. Eventually, he was brought to know grace for the fulfillment of God's purpose. In a remarkable commentary on the life of Abraham from the book of Genesis, Witness Lee presents Abraham as a genuine man, not unlike us all, fallen, but called by God. Like him, we have seen "the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ" and have been attracted to follow Him. Like him, we must learn the lessons of faith through trials, testing, and failure, in order to enter into the promises and blessings of God. Abraham--Called by God, taken from the Life-study of Genesis, presents a unique and vital view of the father of our faith.

Book Abraham in Arms

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ann M. Little
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2013-03-01
  • ISBN : 0812202643
  • Pages : 275 pages

Download or read book Abraham in Arms written by Ann M. Little and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1678, the Puritan minister Samuel Nowell preached a sermon he called "Abraham in Arms," in which he urged his listeners to remember that "Hence it is no wayes unbecoming a Christian to learn to be a Souldier." The title of Nowell's sermon was well chosen. Abraham of the Old Testament resonated deeply with New England men, as he embodied the ideal of the householder-patriarch, at once obedient to God and the unquestioned leader of his family and his people in war and peace. Yet enemies challenged Abraham's authority in New England: Indians threatened the safety of his household, subordinates in his own family threatened his status, and wives and daughters taken into captivity became baptized Catholics, married French or Indian men, and refused to return to New England. In a bold reinterpretation of the years between 1620 and 1763, Ann M. Little reveals how ideas about gender and family life were central to the ways people in colonial New England, and their neighbors in New France and Indian Country, described their experiences in cross-cultural warfare. Little argues that English, French, and Indian people had broadly similar ideas about gender and authority. Because they understood both warfare and political power to be intertwined expressions of manhood, colonial warfare may be understood as a contest of different styles of masculinity. For New England men, what had once been a masculinity based on household headship, Christian piety, and the duty to protect family and faith became one built around the more abstract notions of British nationalism, anti-Catholicism, and soldiering for the Empire. Based on archival research in both French and English sources, court records, captivity narratives, and the private correspondence of ministers and war officials, Abraham in Arms reconstructs colonial New England as a frontier borderland in which religious, cultural, linguistic, and geographic boundaries were permeable, fragile, and contested by Europeans and Indians alike.

Book The Book of Revelation a New Beginning

Download or read book The Book of Revelation a New Beginning written by Terry L Newbegin and published by BalboaPress. This book was released on 2011-03-23 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Revelation: A New Beginning contains the hidden secrets of Saint Johns Revelation, and as you know, it is one of the most debated and most difficult books of all the scriptures to read and understand because of the extreme symbolism tied to it. Man has always assumed the word of Gods prophets and their stories were indisputable just because of their eminence in interpreted them as being true. Man has forgotten the history of himself, Earth, God, the origin of the universe, and how the scriptures have been documented, interpreted, and strictly passed down by our ancestors and religious leaders. As symbolic as Revelation is it has nothing to do with the end days or even about a solitary Anti-Christ as we understand it nor is it about Jesus coming to save you. In truth, Saint Johns Revelation is your own guide showing you that you no longer need to look at yourself as a sinner because you have bared your cross, like Jesus, and now the time has come for you to ascend to a higher state of Mind. The book of Revelation: A New Beginning is a book that will help open the gates of your soul memories so you can become aware of your own divineness, and that you are a God too. My fellow Gods, what is coming to an end is the old ways of perceiving and understanding God. It is not that God is a mystery. It is you that is the mystery, and when fear is resolved within, you are then ready to open up to the hidden secrets behind the Book of Revelation that religions have kept as a secret for thousands of years, either on purpose or because of ignorance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this discursive commentary Joseph Blenkinsopp explores the story of Abraham -- iconic ancestor of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam -- as told in Genesis 11-25. Presented in continuous discussion rather than in verse-by-verse form, Blenkinsopp s commentary focuses on the literary and theological artistry of the narrative as a whole. Blenkinsopp discussses a range of issues raised in the Abraham saga, including confirmation of God s promises, Isaac s sacrifice and the death of Jesus, and Abraham s other beloved son, Ishmael. Each chapter has a section called Filling in the Gaps, which probes some of the vast amount of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic commentary that the basic Genesis text has generated through the ages. In an epilogue Blenkinsopp looks at Abraham in early Christianity and expresses his own views, as a Christian, on Abraham. Readers of Blenkinsopp s Abraham: The Story of a Life will surely come away with a deeper, richer understanding of this seminal ancient figure.

Book How God Forms Abraham to Be a Blessing

Download or read book How God Forms Abraham to Be a Blessing written by Qiang Fu and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to understand God's interactions with Abraham in relation to God's command that Abraham "be a blessing" (Gen 12:2d), which is directly tied to God's goal that "in you all the families of the earth will be blessed" (Gen 12:3b). The book proposes a formative narrative approach to examine interactions between character and plot, the movement of plot, and the connection between sequential plots. An analysis of thirteen Abrahamic narratives (Gen 12-22) suggests a classification based on four different types of interactions between God and Abraham, which indicate how cooperation and conflict between God and Abraham advance the narrative's plot. The book then proposes a narrative discourse analysis to examine how Abraham evolved through different stages of the narrative by moving from deviation to cooperation. Detailed analysis of this transformation process reveals three turning points in Abraham's life. The formative narrative approach and narrative discourse analysis proposed in this book can contribute to the analysis of two important aspects of Old Testament narratives: the formation of plot and the cause-and-effect structure in narrative discourse.

  • ISBN : 3110923971
  • Pages : 544 pages

Download or read book Testament of Abraham written by Dale C. Allison and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-08-26 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first verse-by-verse commentary on the Greek text of the Testament of Abraham places the work within the history of both Jewish and Christian literature. It emphasizes the literary artistry and comedic nature of the Testament, brings to the task of interpretation a mass of comparative material, and establishes that, although the Testament goes back to a Jewish tale of the first or second century CE, the Christian elements are much more extensive than has previously been realized. The commentary further highlights the dependence of the Testament upon both Greco-Roman mythology and the Jewish Bible. This should be the standard commentary for years to come.
