Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled New Design Methods for Perfect Reconstruction Filter Banks Submitted by Tsui Kai Man for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2004 Perfect reconstruction (PR) filter banks (FBs) have found applications in signal analysis, subband coding and the construction of wavelet bases. This study considers the theory and design of two-channel structural PR FBs. One important advantage of a structural PR FB is that its design can be simplified to conventional finite-/infinite- duration impulse response (FIR/IIR) filter design problems. This study proposes a new structural FB called multi-plet FB. It generalizes structural PR FBs [Pho 1995] and triplet FBs [Ans 1999] by employing multiple lifting steps. The resulting FB is more flexible than traditional structures in choosing the system delays and the filter lengths of the analysis filters. A systematic design procedure based on second order cone programming (SOCP) is also proposed. This is particularly useful for realizing FBs with a narrow transition band. The thesis first makes a detailed study of SOCP, a powerful convex optimization method allowing linear and convex quadratic inequality constraints to be incorporated. Using this useful property, a new method for the optimal minimax and least square (LS) design of linear-phase and low-delay FIR filters with prescribed flatness and peak error is proposed. New low-delay specialized filters such as Hilbert transformers (HTs), digital differentiators (DDs), M-th band filters (MBFs), and variable digital filters (VDFs) can be designed readily by the proposed method. The proposed SOCP approach is coupled with a new constrained model reduction method, which retains the denominator of the conventional model reduction techniques and formulates the optimal design of the numerator as a SOCP, and further extended to the design of causal stable IIR filters. These novel constrained FIR/IIR design methods are then applied to the design of casual stable IIR PR triplet and multi-plet FBs. The use of a hybrid of allpass and FIR linear-phase filters also enables the bumping effect found in the conventional structural PR IIR triplet FBs to be suppressed by an appropriate choice of parameter in the triplet structure. Wavelet FBs can also be obtained by the proposed constrained filter design approach. For the multi-plet FB, a low order prototype PR FB with a much wider transition band is first designed using non-linear optimization in order to obtain a symmetric frequency response and prescribed passband/stopband ripples. A subfilter is then designed using SOCP which enables the prototype FB to be wrapped by means of frequency transformation to meet the desired transition bandwidth while preserving the PR condition, passband/stopband ripples and lifting structure. The design procedure is very robust, and can be applied to both linear- phase and low-delay multi-plet FBs. By formulating the K-regularity conditions as a set of linear equality constraints on the subfilter coefficients, multi-plet-based wavelet bases can easily be designed under the SOCP framework. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is illustrated with several design examples. Subband image coding or SBC was first perfonned as such in 1985, and as the results became known at first through conference proceedings, and later through journal papers, the research community became excited about both the theoretical and practical aspects of this new approach. This excitement is continuing today, with many major research laboratories and research universities around the world investigating the subband approach to coding of color images, high resolution images, video- including video conferencing and advanced tele vision, and the medical application of picture archiving systems. Much of the fruits of this work is summarized in the eight chapters of this book which were written by leading practitioners in this field. The subband approach to image coding starts by passing the image through a two- or three-dimensional filter bank. The two-dimensional (2-D) case usually is hierarchical' consisting of two stages of four filters each. Thus the original image is split into 16 subband images, with each one decimated or subsampled by 4x4, resulting in a data conservation. The individual channel data is then quantized ·for digital transmission. In an attractive variation an octave-like approach, herein tenned subband pyramid, is taken for the decomposition resulting in a total of just eleven subbands.

The book has two main components, corresponding to multiresolution processing in the contexts of: 1) signal processing and 2) geometry processing. The signal-processing component of the book studies one-dimensional and multi-dimensional multirate systems, considering multirate structures such as sampling-rate converters, filter banks, and transmultiplexers. A particularly strong emphasis is placed on filter banks. Univariate and multivariate wavelet systems are examined, with the biorthogonal and orthonormal cases both being considered. The relationship between filter banks and wavelet systems is established. Several applications of filter banks and wavelets in signal processing are covered, including signal coding, image compression, and noise reduction. For readers interested in image compression, a detailed overview of the JPEG-2000 standard is also provided. Some other applications of multirate systems are considered, such as transmultiplexers for communication systems (e.g., multicarrier modulation). The geometry-processing component of the book studies subdivision surfaces and subdivision wavelets. Some mathematical background relating to geometry processing is provided, including topics such as homogeneous coordinate transformations, manifolds, surface representations, and polygon meshes.
