Download or read book Handbook of Police Administration written by James Ruiz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As figureheads of the most visible segment of criminal justice, today’s police administrators are forced to tackle challenges never faced by their predecessors. Heightened local and global threats, advanced technologies, and increased demands for procedural transparency require new levels of flexibility, innovative thinking, and the ability to foster and maintain relationships within the community. It is more crucial than ever to recruit and retain capable leaders to guide law enforcement agencies at this pivotal time in history. Covering areas such as leadership in policing, use of force, and understanding how the law shapes police practice, Handbook of Police Administration examines the key topics that must be considered by law enforcement professionals. Recognizing that police leaders need the skills and traits of a politician, accountant, attorney, field lieutenant, and futurist, the authors cover a variety of contemporary issues surrounding police administration and management. Divided into five thematic sections, it considers the legal aspects of overseeing a public sector organization, as well as how research, technology, and training can assist modern police leaders in performing their duties more effectively and efficiently. The book covers problematic issues such as officers accepting gratuities, undercover work, and the time criteria required for promotional consideration. It concludes with a chapter comparing administrative issues in Australia with many of the subjects previously addressed with regard to U.S. protocol. Using a range of perspective, differing viewpoints, and controversial issues, Handbook of Police Administration provides a springboard to stimulate discussion at the cutting-edge of debate in the dynamic field of policing.
Download or read book An Ethical Approach to Ending Recidivism written by Michael A. Gray M.A.Ed. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-12-28 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law enforcement in a free society must strike a delicate balance between protecting individual rights to professional service, especially from government-sponsored agencies and the societys interest in professional ethical decision-making by law enforcement professionals. Often this is seen as one between a principal defense of civil rights and a mere Unitarian interest in improving the continuity of customer service. There is no certain place to fix the line between appropriate and Impermissible correctional officer and custody staff professional conduct. What is most conspicuous about this area of ethics in Department of corrections is the lack of controlling standards for defining the roles of correctional officers and custody staff. The purpose of the correctional Leadership and Ethics Training is to prevent breaches of the peace; enforce the laws, directives and regulations which govern the correctional institutions to protect its employees, the facilities, its assets and the nation's currency" which function in synchronization. Trainees will be able to consult a menu of techniques and be encouraged to contribute ideas of their own.

Download or read book Professional Lives of Community Corrections Officers The Invisible Side of Reentry written by Faith E. Lutze and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first contemporary works to bring together research focused on community corrections officers, Professional Lives of Community Corrections Officers: The Invisible Side of Reentry, by Faith E. Lutze, helps readers understand the importance of community corrections officers to the success of the criminal justice system. The author brings the important work of these officers out from the shadows of the prison and into the light of informed policymaking, demonstrating how their work connects to the broader political, economic, and social context. Arguing that they are “street-level boundary spanners” who are in the best position to lead effective reentry initiatives built on interagency collaboration, the author shows how community corrections officers can effectively lead a fluid response to reentry that is inclusive of control, support, and treatment. This supplement is ideal for community corrections or probation and parole courses to supplement core textbooks.

This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of the chapters included in this volume provide preliminary answers to questions such as: How extensive were COVID-19 outbreaks in prisons, jails, and community corrections systems globally? Which regions and countries reported the largest outbreaks? Why were prisons and jails found to be "hot spots" for the spread of COVID-19 in most countries? How did governments initially respond to COVID-19 outbreaks in their corrections systems? Did the mitigation strategies used in each country reduce the spread of the infection in the corrections system (both in prisons and jails, and in community corrections)? Did the corrections-focused mitigation strategies used in each country have a positive or an adverse impact on public health and public safety? How likely is it that the varied short-term mitigation strategies implemented by governments will result in long-term changes in corrections policies and practices? The book includes three chapters examining the global impact of the COVID-19 outbreaks, six regional overviews, and 27 country-specific reviews, including reviews targeting 21 of the 50 largest prison systems globally. This collection will be an excellent resource for researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and the general public interested in knowing more about the nature and extent of COVID-19 outbreaks in corrections systems globally, and about the diversity of responses developed and implemented by governments from each global region. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Victims & Offenders.
