Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fat of the Land: The Story of an American Farm I would never have given up my profession voluntarily; but when it gave me up, I had to accept the dismissal, surrender my ambitions, and fall back upon my primary instinct for di version and happiness. The dismissal came with out warning, like the fall of a tree when no wind shakes the forest, but it was imperative and per emptory. The doctors (and they were among the best in the land) said, NO more of this kind of work for years, and I had to accept their verdict, though I knew that for years meant forever. Book New American Farm Book

Download or read book New American Farm Book written by R. L. Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New American Farm Book This work was originally written by Richard L. Allen, then one of the editors of the "American Agriculturist." It was published in the year 1846, the first and only complete work of kindred character in this country, down to that time. It was an able compilation of valuable matter, some portions of it then existing in various miscellaneous publications of the day, crystalized, and brought into available shape, through the industry of its experienced author. The volume - then among the best agricultural books of the day, and upon subjects less investigated and studied than now - had a wide circulation, and met with general approval by those competent to judge of the topics on which it treated. It was a work of ability, of laborious research, and study; but, like similar books in a rapidly progressive age, has had its day. Book The American Farmer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American Farmer Classic Reprint written by A. M. Simons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Farmer The history, present problems and probable future evolution of the American farmer are to a large extent unique. Nevertheless he is a part of the great social development of his age to 'a greater extent than the farmers of any other nation past or present. These facts render the voluminous European literature on the agrarian question of little value to the student of American agricultural problems save as it deals with the most general phases of the subject. European conditions are still largely influenced by the survivals of feudalism. The great estates trace their origin to this social stage. Hundreds of details affecting the present relation of land lord and tenant descend from the days of lord and serf. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Farmer, Vol. 8: March 25, 1826 Dear Sir - In answer to your circular, I would oh serve, that I should not have presumed to furnish matter for a volume of the Memoirs of the Board, had it not been asserted, that any facts, however simple, would be considered valuable. I have carefully watched the progress Of improve ment in agriculture, in order to derive benefit from any system of cultivation, new and useful, which might be proposed. Although many improvements in the business of husbandry have been suggested, which would no doubt be of advantage to the farm ing interest, were they reduced to practice, yeti shall speak of but one, which I consider the most prominent, and that deserving the greatest atten tion; and which, if generally introduced, would save to the farmers of this state, annually, many millions. Download or read book American Farming and Food Classic Reprint written by Finlay Dun and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Farming and Food The present volume is the result of a visit to the United States in the autumn of 1879. I then travelled through the wheat regions of the Red River, Manitoba, and the great Mississippi basin, examined crops and farming in Illinois, Minnesota, Dakota, Iowa and Kansas, and inspected some of the valuable herds and studs of Kentucky and other states. Wherever I went I found everyone courteous, and ready to furnish information regarding the country and its wonderful and varied resources. Amongst many things new and notable to a stranger, I was particularly impressed with the sobriety, assiduity, adaptability, and energy of the people their appreciation of the advantages of education; their ingenious application of labour-saving machinery; and their progress in almost every department of industry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Man With the Hoe: A Picture of American Farm Life as It Is to-Day In reprinting this story of farm life, a few preliminary remarks become necessary. First, as to the title: "The Man with the Hoe" was written and had appeared in The Ohio Farmer as a serial before Edwin Markham's poem, by the same title, flamed meteor-like above the literary horizon. There is natural hesitation in offering to the public a book under a title which is linked with another's worldwide fame, and but for a fact which shall be alluded to later, the author would gladly exchange it for one less liable to invite "invidious comparisons." The damage to the poet will, of course, be slight. The chief danger to the writer of the present volume will be that purchasers, when ordering, will forget to specify the author, and upon receiving a copy of Edwin Markham's poem, will find that they have their money's worth, and fail to have it exchanged for the story - on the principle that "it is never safe to give up certainties for uncertainties," - resulting in a decrease of sales for the undersigned. So, in ordering "The Man with the Hoe," if you wish to get the story, be sure to add: "By Adam Blake." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. We earn our living in the city, and we look to it for most of our recreation. We hardly ever think about the job of growing the food we eat and the fiber that is used in our clothes and homes. Yet the people who do this job - the farm families of America - help every one of us to a better life. They produce the bacon we eat at breakfast, the apple in our lunchbox, the cotton in the shirt We wear, the turkey on our holiday table. They do mankind's primary work taking care of animals and cultivating the earth - so that all of us have abundant food and clothing. Because American farmers do their 'j ob so well, the rest of us can manufacture autos and furniture, practice medi cine, fly airplanes, design buildings, teach school, and do all the other varied work of the Nation. Download or read book Changes in American Farming Classic Reprint written by Sherman E. Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Changes in American Farming This study was undertaken in the belief that a first requisite for intelligent action on our peacetime production problems is an understanding of the nature and strength of the forces that have shaped the course of agricultural production in recent years. These forces will continue to influence production in the years to come. But new forces will be injected. Some of these are already on the horizon - the mechanical cotton picker is an example. Others cannot be foreseen. But constant change must be expected; and agriculture must adapt itself to changes that are inevitable and, for the most part, desirable.
