Book Democracy Incorporated

Download or read book Democracy Incorporated written by Sheldon S. Wolin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-29 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracy is struggling in America--by now this statement is almost cliché. But what if the country is no longer a democracy at all? In Democracy Incorporated, Sheldon Wolin considers the unthinkable: has America unwittingly morphed into a new and strange kind of political hybrid, one where economic and state powers are conjoined and virtually unbridled? Can the nation check its descent into what the author terms "inverted totalitarianism"? Wolin portrays a country where citizens are politically uninterested and submissive--and where elites are eager to keep them that way. At best the nation has become a "managed democracy" where the public is shepherded, not sovereign. At worst it is a place where corporate power no longer answers to state controls. Wolin makes clear that today's America is in no way morally or politically comparable to totalitarian states like Nazi Germany, yet he warns that unchecked economic power risks verging on total power and has its own unnerving pathologies. Wolin examines the myths and mythmaking that justify today's politics, the quest for an ever-expanding economy, and the perverse attractions of an endless war on terror. He argues passionately that democracy's best hope lies in citizens themselves learning anew to exercise power at the local level. Democracy Incorporated is one of the most worrying diagnoses of America's political ills to emerge in decades. It is sure to be a lightning rod for political debate for years to come. Now with a new introduction by Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Chris Hedges, Democracy Incorporated remains an essential work for understanding the state of democracy in America.

Book Democracy in One Book or Less

Download or read book Democracy in One Book or Less written by David Litt and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Wry, quickly readable, yet informed and edgy . . . whimsy and pop culture, enlisted toward the end of knowledge.” — The Atlantic “Brings Dave Barry-style humor to an illuminating book on what is wrong with American democracy — and how to put it right. . . . Litt’s playful stories and fun facts explode common wisdom. . . . In the book’s strongest contribution, Litt shows how radically our democracy has been altered in recent decades [, making] the case that nearly all of these negative trends are occurring by design.” — Washington Post “Strikingly timely. . . . [Litt] offers ways to fix governmental ills that stymie all Americans and does so with a breezy and accessible wit.” — The Guardian “Remarkably prescient and applicable. It's rare to feel good about the way things are going, but Litt's book will get you there.” — Elle, “23 Books That Will Put You in a Good Mood, Guaranteed” “Litt’s book laces his signature humor into his exploration of American Democracy and how it has transformed over the years.” — Time, “45 New Books You Need to Read This Summer” “Casts a welcome, cleansing beam of light on a subject that has become increasingly murky and frustratingly confusing . . . Litt has a breezy, often conversational tone, but that in no way diminishes the force of his argument. Politics has changed, and not in a good way. But there are ways American democracy can be fixed, and it is to Litt’s credit that he offers practical albeit challenging solutions to the problems confronting our system of governance.” — Booklist (starred review) “[A] snappy and well-informed dissection of the current state of American democracy. . . Both optimistic and clear-eyed, this quip-filled call to action will resonate strongly with young progressives.” — Publishers Weekly “A pleasure to read, even in its darkest moments, and refreshingly optimistic about the future of the republic.” — Kirkus Reviews “Hilarious and incisive. If you want to understand what happened to America and how to change it, Democracy in One Book or Less will make you laugh and think, all at the same time.” — David Axelrod, former senior advisor to Barack Obama and author of Believer: My Forty Years in Politics “You think you know about politics and the motivations and machinations of Washington—and then you read this book. A wildly entertaining and informative journey that peels back the curtain on how the Beltway functions, David Litt’s latest is a must-read for anyone who can’t look away from the ‘what’ of the news and wants to understand the ‘why.’” — Amie Parnes, co-author of Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton's Doomed Campaign “If you want to understand how our government really works without having a panic attack or a migraine, read this book. The way David tells stories about politics is funny, informative, and, most important, hopeful. David Litt dares to remain inspired, and that is what the conversation around politics needs most.” — Ilana Glazer, co-creator and co-star of Broad City “I’m so relieved to have this book at this moment in our political climate, a guide to our democracy when we so desperately need one.” — Abbi Jacobson, co-creator and co-star of Broad City and author of I Might Regret This “David Litt’s book is equal parts how-to, historical, and hilarious as he takes us through the trials and travails of how the electorate and democracy in general works—and sometimes doesn’t—yet still lovingly shows us that it’s worth it all the same. A warm, pithy, and inspiring read.” — Keegan-Michael Key “I always look forward to David Litt’s fiercely intelligent and funny take on the current state of things. If ever there was a time we needed a hilarious and thought-provoking look at how our democracy got to this point—and how we can save it—it’s now!” — Billy Eichner “Democracy in One Book or Less is by turns funny and illuminating. Litt combines his trademark humor and witty writing with an urgent call to fix American democracy. It’s a tragicomedy that makes you a better citizen while you laugh and shake your head in disbelief at our broken system.” — Brian Klaas, assistant professor of global politics at University College London and columnist for the Washington Post

Book Blissfully Ravaged in Democracy Adventures in Politics 1980 2020

Download or read book Blissfully Ravaged in Democracy Adventures in Politics 1980 2020 written by Brian Hassett and published by Gets Things Done Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-27 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book that makes democracy fun. Who ever heard of such a thing?! As legendary New Hampshire activist Granny D put it - "Democracy isn't something we have, it's something we do." This 400 page book is about 40 years of "doing" - from the Carter-Reagan debate through meeting every candidate at the New Hampshire primary of 2020. It's 100,000 words with 100 photos that tell a story of everything from being involved in campaigns to the culture of the country as they unfolded. It has firsthand accounts of discovering political rallies are really rock concerts, to how to get involved, to backgrounds told entertainingly about everything from "vote swapping" to gerrymandering to third parties. It's been compared to Hunter Thompson's "Fear & Loathing on the Campaign Trail" - but it's really "Fun & Loving on the Trail." It has a Jack Kerouac "On The Road" undercurrent, with a Grateful Dead soundtrack of Adventure. John Lennon is mentioned as often as any politician. If you want a book that rips politicos and the democratic process - this is not it. This sees and celebrates the good in others - from presidents to protesters, from voters to reporters. It's a celebration of the process - while encouraging participation in the present. It's about weaving the playfulness of the Merry Pranksters into the seriousness of deciding our leaders. It's about how we got here and where we're going. It's about political rallies and rallying friends. It's storytelling with substance - history with humor - and the incredible lightness of being. It's about following your dreams to the front row of the revolution. It's a road trip with a narrator full of Adventure Tales and a knack for getting into the center of the action. It spans Gary Hart to Bernie Sanders, Bill Clinton to Pete Buttigieg, Howard Dean to Elizabeth Warren. It takes the reader from big tube TVs to YouTube videos. It captures political concerts from Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson & Aretha Franklin ushering in Bill Clinton to Bruce Springsteen, U2 & Garth Brooks welcoming Barack Obama. It celebrates the new wave of political leaders who give voice to an open future of possibilities, while also paying tribute to some giants we've lost - from Vaclav Havel to Paul Tsongas, Tim Russert to Abbie Hoffman. If one of the meanings of life is to be engaged and inspire others - this is a how-to manual. If you thought your voice didn't matter - this is an all-access pass to the choir where everybody's encouraged to sing. This is about getting yourself to the places you want to be - and having the journey be a blast. It's a celebration of America - from Rockwellian small towns to rocking Manhattan - from the tiniest campaign offices to a million people on The Mall in Washington. It covers every 4-year cycle from Jimmy Carter being President to Joe Biden's nomination. You'll go from a rally with 50 people to one with 5,000 in a couple pages. You'll experience the elation of victories from Obama at Barackefeller Center in New York to Bernie Sanders in New Hampshire - and also be in the room for the shock of a candidate withdrawing or the perfect storm of a tsunami hitting like at the Hillary "victory party" in 2016. You'll be reminded why all this matters and why it's so important to be involved. It's the ever-unfolding story of humanity - and these are your years to be part of it. You'll learn new ideas about empowering your children to vote and how a local election is as important as the White House Super Bowl. You'll be a fly on the wall with the journalists who cover it - and in the cloakroom of the Senate when the language gets salty. We each only get one vote - but this will show you how to turn that into a party. A political party.

Book Demanding Democracy

Download or read book Demanding Democracy written by Marc Stears and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a major work of history and political theory that traces radical democratic thought in America across the twentieth century, seeking to recover ideas that could reenergize democratic activism today. The question of how citizens should behave as they struggle to create a more democratic society has haunted the United States throughout its history. Should citizens restrict themselves to patient persuasion or take to the streets and seek to impose change? Marc Stears argues that anyone who continues to wrestle with these questions could learn from the radical democratic tradition that was forged in the twentieth century by political activists, including progressives, trade unionists, civil rights campaigners, and members of the student New Left. These activists and their movements insisted that American campaigners for democratic change should be free to strike out in whatever ways they thought necessary, so long as their actions enhanced the political virtues of citizens and contributed to the eventual triumph of the democratic cause. Reevaluating the moral and strategic arguments, and the triumphs and excesses, of this radical democratic tradition, Stears contends that it still offers a compelling account of citizen behavior--one that is fairer, more inclusive, and more truly democratic than those advanced by political theorists today.

Book Imagining the American Polity

Download or read book Imagining the American Polity written by John G. Gunnell and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have long prided themselves on living in a country that serves as a beacon of democracy to the world, but from the time of the founding they have also engaged in debates over what the criteria for democracy are as they seek to validate their faith in the United States as a democratic regime. In this book John Gunnell shows how the academic discipline of political science has contributed in a major way to this ongoing dialogue, thereby playing a significant role in political education and the formulation of popular conceptions of American democracy. Using the distinctive “internalist” approach he has developed for writing intellectual history, Gunnell traces the dynamics of conceptual change and continuity as American political science evolved from a focus in the nineteenth century on the idea of the state, through the emergence of a pluralist theory of democracy in the 1920s and its transfiguration into liberalism in the mid-1930s, up to the rearticulation of pluralist theory in the 1950s and its resurgence, yet again, in the 1990s. Along the way he explores how political scientists have grappled with a fundamental question about popular sovereignty: Does democracy require a people and a national democratic community, or can the requisites of democracy be achieved through fortuitous social configurations coupled with the design of certain institutional mechanisms?

Book The Gardens of Democracy

Download or read book The Gardens of Democracy written by Eric Liu and published by Sasquatch Books. This book was released on 2011-12-06 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s “10 Books Everyone Should Read” This fascinating study of democracy in the 21st century is a much-needed call for citizens to reach across the aisle and put power back into the hands of individuals—not Big Government Eric Liu and Nick Hanauer outline a simple but revolutionary argument for why our most basic assumptions about democracy need updating for the 21st century. They offer a roadmap for those looking for a way forward from an American life marked by divisive conversations. In a world with widespread political upheaval, a deep wellspring of civic engagement and collective action is emerging. America is finding that our cultural and political dialogue is spiking over everything from racial and social justice to fighting the ever-widening income gap, to climate change—even how we might best collaborate as active citizens to heal our democracy. Timely, inspiring, and highly charged, The Gardens of Democracy is a much-needed call to action for citizens to embrace their roles in a democratic society. To model positivity and good citizenship, plus ensure liberty and justice for all, we must achieve compromise by reaching across the aisle and putting the power to execute programs back in the hands of individuals, not big government. We must redefine how we view prosperity in order to move from a dog-eat-dog mentality that perpetuates the top 1% to a communal and inclusive movement that illustrates that we’re all better off when we’re all better off.
