Book Speak Listen and Learn

Download or read book Speak Listen and Learn written by Tony Wood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This indispensable resource, for teachers of pupils aged 7-13 years, consists of a series of graduated lesson plans aimed at improving children’s speaking and listening skills, their self-confidence and their motivation to learn, ultimately leading to better school performance. The scheme was developed and tested in schools during a four year period with over three thousand children and their teachers, and focuses on class and group activities that are enjoyable as well as instructive. All pupils are able to participate regardless of background, academic standing or facility in English, and the skills acquired are central to the National Curriculum for England and Wales Key Stages 2 and 3. Each lesson worksheet includes learning objectives, guidance on preparation and organisation, an activity guide, and follow-up suggestions, all presented in a clear and simple manner to lead the teacher step by step through the session. The materials are grouped into four levels of difficulty which combine to build a powerful range of abilities associated with persuasive and presentational speech, dialogue and debate, as well as developing the children’s command, use, and articulation of English. Each level consists of twelve starter lessons suitable for class-based group work, with sections preparing pupils for a variety of class competitions including public speaking, poetry reading and debating. The activities link naturally with other areas of the curriculum, and topics already being studied can easily be incorporated. In a parallel controlled research project highly significant gains in a nationally standardised test of non-verbal reasoning were made over a seven month period by children who followed the activities for one lesson a week compared to those who did not. These were well in excess of what would be expected for their increased age. Particularly high gains were made by children of lesser ability and those for whom English was an additional language. The improvements recorded were later confirmed by the schools’ own National Curriculum assessments of progress against targets, where on average the project children exceeded substantially the end of year forecasts made by their teachers.

Book The Professional Development of Teachers Practice and Theory

Download or read book The Professional Development of Teachers Practice and Theory written by Philip Adey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hopkins, Bruce Joyce, Michael Huberman, Matthew Miles, and Virginia Richardson. But we have chosen to present our own experience and empirical data first and then, in Part 3, to show how this experience and data relates to models which have been proposed by others. We will address here methodological issues concerned with collecting and interpreting evidence of relationships amongst the many individual and situational factors associated with PD, and re-visit the arguments about ‘process-product’ research on PD. In the light of our experience, we will interrogate models of PD which have been proposed by others and attempt to move forward our total understanding of the process of the professional development of teachers for educational change. In conclusion, we will look at some current national practice in professional development, concentrating on the recent English experience of introducing ‘strategies’ into schools but referring also, by way of contrast, to the situation in the United States. WHAT’S THE PROBLEM? Why has the professional development of teachers already exercised so many good minds for so long? And how can we justify adding another book to this field? The answer to both questions must lie in the continuing demand from society in general (at least as interpreted by politicians and newspaper editors) for improvements in the quality of education.

Book A Reinterpretation of Linguistic Relativity

Download or read book A Reinterpretation of Linguistic Relativity written by Guohui Jiang and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-12-03 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a vital issue not only of linguistics, but also of cognitive sciences, psychology, neurosciences, philosophy etc., engaging in the study of the relation between language, thought and reality, the doctrine of linguistic relativity (LR) went through upsurge-downturn-renaissance during more than 80 years, yet remains still unsolved puzzle for researchers of all these academic areas. Numerous treatises with valued ideas about this issue are continuously contributed to this theme; nevertheless, the study of LR has been stagnant up to nowadays. The reason is that, in my opinion, the study has deviated from the right direction, and this deviation might be boiled down to three basic concepts: The expository scope of LR. LR cannot and should not concern with (a) human speech-thinking action at the level of human biological-physiological traits, (b) human behaviours in all fields of his everyday life and (c) human spiritual activities in the areas of science, literature, philosophy, art etc. LR will explain that, constrained by the language, ordinary people are not aware that the reality they talk/think about does not coincide with the outside world they physically experience. The relativity. We should ponder the language-thought-reality relation in line with the original intention of Whorf when he proposed the principle of LR, i.e. the relativity should not be interpreted as the discrepancy between customs, modes of thinking and patterns of behavior of different linguistic communities on the basis of comparing peculiarities of their languages. The language. The doctrine of LR should concern with the human language as a complete and comprehensive system, but not with a set of sporadically observed phenomena and certain random interpretation of them. The linguistic intermediated world is eventually construed by the entire system of language, rather than an assembly of peculiar language items.
