Book New 1 D and 3 D Velocity Models and Hypocenter Relocations for the Charlevoix Seismic Zone

Download or read book New 1 D and 3 D Velocity Models and Hypocenter Relocations for the Charlevoix Seismic Zone written by Sara Kelemencky and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present new 1-D and 3-D P- and S-wave velocity models for the active Charlevoix seismic zone (CSZ). The CSZ has generated several damaging earthquakes but the causative reason for the seismic activity in this intraplate region is unknown. Structure developed during prior tectonic events could be influencing present day seismic activity. Previous velocity models derived from local earthquake tomography utilize an overly simplistic half-space starting model. We develop improved 1-D P- and S-wave starting models using VELEST. These models contain several layers in the depth range 0 to 30 km and provide better starting models for 3-D inversion. Our new 3-D P- and S-wave velocity models contain several interesting anomalies that will provide insight into what factors influence earthquake occurrence in the CSZ. Relocated hypocenters outline the spatial extent of currently microseismically active seismogenic faults.

Book The Seismic Velocity Model as an Interpretation Asset

Download or read book The Seismic Velocity Model as an Interpretation Asset written by Phil Schultz and published by SEG Books. This book was released on 1998-12-30 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 3D velocity model is built with a both geophysical and geologic input because of the accuracy demands of depth imaging, so it becomes an increasingly effective interpretive tool. This book addresses ways in which the interpreter should participate in development of the model and underscores its interpretive value with case study examples.

Book 3 D Seismic Survey Design Via Modeling and Reverse Time Migration

Download or read book 3 D Seismic Survey Design Via Modeling and Reverse Time Migration written by Suleyman Coskun and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic forward modeling studies are required for adequately imaging complex geological structures, such as folds, faults, and domes. Many U.S. Gulf Coast salt domes are used for oil and gas exploration, brine production, and underground hydrocarbon storage. For this reason, it is crucial to image the flank of the salt domes and surrounding sediments. Allied Geophysical Laboratories (AGL) carried out a 2-D seismic study in the Texas Brine Company facility to image the Pierce Junction salt dome. However, we were not able to image the salt flanks because of improper survey design. This led to the current study which proposes a 2-D and a 3-D seismic survey design using modeling and Reverse Time Migration (RTM) imaging. We gathered original 2-D seismic, topography, and gravity data to build 2-D and 3-D velocity models of the Pierce Junction salt dome area. We processed the original 2-D data and extracted the velocities of the cap rock and near surface sediments for use in velocity models. We modelled gravity data collected in a north-south direction and performed analyses on the synthetic seismic data to determine new 2-D conventional seismic survey parameters that could be achieved with the limited acquisition equipment of AGL. We modeled synthetic shot gathers by a finite difference method using the full (two-way) acoustic wave equation, and generated seismic images using the Reverse Time Migration (RTM) method. We determined the optimum parameters of the new 2-D seismic survey by reviewing the quality of the results. These parameters were able to adequately image the salt dome and its surrounding sediments. We then modified the 2-D parameters for a new 3-D survey, and obtained synthetic RTM images based on the 3-D velocity model. Optimal 2-D and 3-D seismic survey designs for the Pierce Junction salt dome area were achieved using seismic modeling and RTM imaging. We found RTM imaging to be a novel and powerful method for determining seismic survey parameters for complex geological structures.

Book 3 D Seismic Exploration

Download or read book 3 D Seismic Exploration written by Robert J. Graebner and published by SEG Books. This book was released on 2001 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 3D seismic method evolved as a natural outgrowth of 2D seismic exploration. This reprint volume attempts to chronicle both the evolution and the state-of-the-art of the 3D seismic method. Papers selected for this volume sample the literature from the early 1970s through 1998. They were drawn primarily from Geophysics, Geophysical Prospecting, The Leading Edge, and First Break. From these journals and publications alone, more than 200 candidate articles were identified dealing with some aspect of 3D seismic exploration. Selection criteria included historical significance, tutorial value, novelty, theoretical importance, practicality, and cost-benefit analysis. The papers are arranged chronologically. The papers in this volume and their rich reference lists cover virtually all of the relevant work on exploration 3D through 1998. The chapters are "The Early Work," "3-D Field Methods," "3-D Processing Imaging," "3-D Case Histories/Interpretation," "Shallow 3-D Seismic Methods," and "3-D Economics."

Book Tomographic Determination of Seismic Velocity Models with Kinematic Wavefield Attributes

Download or read book Tomographic Determination of Seismic Velocity Models with Kinematic Wavefield Attributes written by Eric Duveneck and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the transformation of recorded seismic reflection data into a depth image a seismic velocity model is required. In this thesis, a new tomographic method for the determination of such velocity models is presented which makes use of traveltime information in the form of kinematic wavefield attributes. These attributes are the coefficients of second-order traveltime approximations and can be extracted from the seismic data by means of coherence analyses, e.g., by applying the common-reflection-surface (CRS) stack method. Compared to conventional reflection tomography which requires picking of reflection events in the prestack data, the use of kinematic wavefield attributes leads to considerable practical advantages: the attributes required for the tomographic inversion are taken from the CRS stack results at a number of pick locations in the stacked section. For each considered data point, these attributes can be interpreted in terms of the second-order traveltimes of an emerging wavefront due to a hypothetical point source in the subsurface. During the inversion process, a model is found that minimizes the misfit between these data and the corresponding quantities modeled by dynamic ray tracing. In the thesis, the complete theory of the method, as well as practical applications are presented. Starting with an overview of the required aspects of ray theory and the CRS stack method, the general concept of the new tomographic inversion approach is developed. The method is then discussed in detail for the case of 1D, 2D, and 3D tomographic inversion and the entire process of deriving a velocity model is demonstrated on a synthetic and on a real 2D seismic dataset.
