Download or read book Archaeological and Paleontological Research in Lagoa Santa written by Pedro Da-Gloria and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-19 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking volume presents, for the first time in English, a broad historical review of the researches carried out over 170 years in the region of Lagoa Santa, Brazil, one of the most important archaeological regions in the Americas. From the pioneering work of the Danish naturalist Peter Lund in the XIX century to the recent research on the dispersion of early humans across South America, led by Walter A. Neves and colleagues, Lagoa Santa has offered remarkable findings, the largest collections of early human skeletons in the Americas, and has contributed to the overall discussions about the settlement of the Americas. This edited volume aims to fill the lack of publications in English about Lagoa Santa and gathers representatives of all the main Brazilian institutions directly involved in the archaeological and paleontological investigations in the region, in order to provide the international scientific community a comprehensive and complete account of the researches that contributed to rewrite the history of the peopling of the Americas. The book is organized in two parts. The first consists of chapters describing each of the interventions in the region, beginning with the pioneering work of Peter Lund and culminating with the latest intervention led by Walter A. Neves and his team. The second part of the book consists of reviews of current relevant research foci in the region, such as migrations, health, mortuary rituals, paleontology, rock art and technology.

Download or read book Greenville written by Archie Vernon Huff and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Cherokee Nation hunted the verdant hills in what is now known as Greenville County, South Carolina, the search for economic prosperity and diversity has defined the history of this thriving Upstate region and its expanding urban center. In a sweeping chronicle of the city and county, historian Archie Vernon Huff traces Greenville's business tradition and details its political, religious, and cultural evolution. The region portrayed by Huff has historically defied many Southern norms to distinguish itself economically and ideologically from its neighbors. In addition to tracing Greenville's economic growth, Huff identifies other hallmarks of the region, including the fierce independence of its various populations. He discusses the often conflicting interests and the individual contributions of the area's African Americans, mill workers, business elite, and urban dwellers. Looking beyond but never straying far from the economics of the region, Huff also assesses the impact of Greenville's peaceful but grudging end to segregation, strong evangelical Protestant tradition, conservative arts programs, and influential role in South Carolina's emerging two-party political system.

Download or read book Postnormal Conservation written by Katja Grötzner Neves and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2020 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Since their inception in the sixteenth century, botanic gardens have been embroiled with matters of governance. In Postnormal Conservation, Katja Grötzner Neves reveals that, throughout its long history, the botanical garden institution has been both a product and an enabler of modernity and the Westphalian nation-state. Initially intertwined with projects of colonialism and empire building, contemporary botanic gardens have reinvented themselves as environmental governance actors. They are now at the forefront of emerging forms of networked transnational governance. Building on social studies of science that reveal the politicization of science as the producer of contingent, high-stakes, and uncertain knowledge, and the concomitant politicization of previously taken-for-granted science-policy interfaces, Neves contends that institutions like botanic gardens have discursively deployed postnormal science and posthuman precepts to justify their growing involvement with biodiversity conservation governance within the Anthropocene.

The contributors examine their own experiences, the history of Cabo Verde, and Cabo Verdean diaspora to highlight the commonalities that exist among all women of African descent, such as sexual and domestic violence and media objectification, as well as the different meanings these commonalities can hold in local contexts. Through exploring the literary and musical contributions of Cabo Verdean women, the Cabo Verdean state and its transnational relations, food and cooking traditions, migration and diaspora, and the oral histories of Cabo Verde, the contributors analyze themes of community, race, sexuality, migration, gender, and tradition.
