Book Never Mind the Bosses

Download or read book Never Mind the Bosses written by Robin Ryde and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, power, information and resources have moved from being concentrated in the hands of a few, to being disbursed across many. We need look no further than events on the world stage to see the heat signature of this – from the arrival of Wikileaks, the Arab Spring of 2011 and the Occupy movements, to the social media revolution and flashpoints such as the British Members of Parliament expenses scandal. All are examples of deep change occurring. This book is about what this means for the workplace and for management. The proposition offered here is that our organisations need to catch up, and that the “death of deference” that we are seeing elsewhere in society needs to be accelerated in the workplace. Systems of deference slow down organisational performance. Deference prevents organisations from learning. It stops them from being agile, innovative and ethical. Deference is the enemy of organisational success and it needs to be dismantled so that in its place we can build modern organisations with a new breed of managers and leaders. This book offers a solution to a problem that belongs in the last century, and a game plan for nothing short of a workplace revolution. "If deference is dead, this book is about the resurrection of the effective manager in a world where nothing is quite the way it used to be. Powerful and thought-provoking from start to finish." - Jeremy Vine, BBC Presenter and Author “Never Mind the Bosses is a refreshing type of management book, it advocates that deference to authority figures needs to go if we are to have engaged workforces.” - Cary L. Cooper, CBE, Distinguished Professor of Organizational Psychology and Health at Lancaster University Management School "An engaging and entertaining romp through the post punk world. By going beyond the boundaries of most business books, Ryde gives us all food for thought about how organisations are, or are not, dealing with a rapidly changing society and workforce." - Jo Owen, bestselling author of ‘How to Manage’ and 'How to Lead' “If you are looking for a book that will shake up your thinking about how to improve your organization’s performance – or worried that your competitors will find it first! – try this one.” - Professor Dutch Leonard, Harvard Business School & Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government

Book Never Mind the Laptops

Download or read book Never Mind the Laptops written by Bob Johnstone and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What we all hope for our children's education is undiminished curiosity and creativeness, and solid practical preparation for adult work. Today, there's no doubt that easy access to computers is vital for students. Bob Johnstone has brilliantly and passionately told the story of the worldwide struggle to make today's equivalent of the pencil accessible to all students." -Victor K. McElheny, author of "Watson and DNA" If every kid had a laptop computer, what would difference would it make to their learning? And to their prospects? Today, these are questions that all parents, teachers, school administrators, and politicians must ask themselves. Bob Johnstone provides a definitive answer to the conundrum of computers in the classroom. His conclusion: we owe it to our kids to educate them in the medium of their time. In this book he tells the extraordinary story of the world's first laptop school. How daring educators at an independent girls' school in Melbourne, Australia, empowered their students by making laptops mandatory. And how they solved all the obstacles to laptop learning, including teacher training. Their example spread to thousands of other schools worldwide. Especially in America, where it inspired the largest educational technology initiative in US history-the State of Maine issuing laptops to every seventh-grader in its public school system. This lively, intriguing, anecdote-rich account is based on hundreds of interviews. In it, you'll meet the visionary leaders, inspirational principals, heroic teachers, and their endlessly-surprising students who showed what computers in the classroom are really for.

Book Better Managers Do Better Business

Download or read book Better Managers Do Better Business written by ORRIE BARAGWANATH and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past thirty years I have been lecturing groups and doing productivity consulting for a number of very different factories, businesses and agricultural enterprises. I have identified those factors which make management effective and have categorized the types of managers and the stumbling blocks to effective management by each of the types. In discussion with my son, who has his masters degree in business management, and he asked me to put my experiences and theories on paper and to do it in the same manner I use when give seminars on the subject. In my lectures I illustrate the positive factors and the stumbling blocks by giving down to earth examples from my experiences, but at the same time illustrating, constantly, that the principles of effective management are common to all managers at whatever level of management from the MD running an airline to the farmer planting tomatoes or the janitor getting the cleaning lady to sweep the passage or the mother attempting to control her philistines in the supermarket. I have given an explanation of where and how adults learn their management skills and have defined the four basic management types which are, in my experience, most common. My categories and definitions of the types are original and play a fundamental role in the effectiveness of participative management. They also have an elementary function in building self esteem and pride which is cardinal in assisting all levels of management to motivate subordinates and delegate responsibility. Motivation and delegation being the two most common factors where so many managers lack the fundamentals to be great managers of large companies instead of small time operators with many regrets. The categories I have defined are easily identifiable. African history is littered with the worst types of managers and those of Europe and Latin America stand out like sore thumbs. And the reason is that they never learnt how to motivate or delegate properly. Autocrats have to be tyrannical and greedy because they do not have the management skills to be admired and venerated in their own rite. Their recognition comes from elsewhere. It has to be so. It is a given. All tyrants began as well liked and respected people but end up as psychopaths. Accompanying effective management of the individual is the limitation of one's management style in delegation, the primary limiting factor in management and the core malady in administration at all levels. Effective delegation requires a structured step by step adherence to principles of esteem building, checking, selection and training. Anything less is doomed to failure and ineffectiveness.
