Book excerpt: Tali DiPietro is a good girl with a streak of punk rock rebel. Before I left for college, my mom told me not to settle down with the first guy who crosses my path. Sage advice, sure, but that's hard to do after I share an elevator with a guy who is nothing like the boys back home. I swore off musicians a long time ago, but when I see Jude on stage for the first time, I know I'm going to fall for him, and I'm damn sure it's going to hurt. Jude Goldman is a bad boy with a guitar and big dreams. I have one goal: making it as a musician. There's no obstacle I won't destroy to be the one under the spotlight. Nothing has slowed me down, not until a chocolate-eyed girl with a New York accent enters my world. Tali becomes as important as landing a record deal, and I'll do anything to have both, no matter how much it hurts. We're two ships moored together in a storm of excess, stardom, and broken promises, pulled apart and yanked back in, until we're both battered and breaking. We have that forever kind of love, but for us, forever might be nothing more than stardust and memories. (The Never Blue Duet is a spin-off of the Blue is the Color series, but can be read as a complete standalone!)

Book excerpt: Finally--a theology of love that will help you navigate the confusing waters of modern relationship. In the beginning, God created Adam. Then he made Eve. And ever since we've been picking up the pieces. With an autobiographical thread that turns a book into a story, pastor and speaker John Mark Comer shares about what is right in male/female relationships--what God intended in the Garden. And about what is wrong--the fallout in a post-Eden world. Loveology starts with marriage and works backward. Comer deals with sexuality, romance, singleness, and what it means to be male and female; ending with a raw, uncut, anything goes Q and A dealing with the most asked questions about sexuality and relationships. This is a book for singles, engaged couples, and the newly married--both inside and outside the church--who want to learn what the Scriptures have to say about sexuality and relationships. For those who are tired of Hollywood's propaganda, and the church's silence. And for people who want to ask the why questions and get intelligent, nuanced, grace-and-truth answers, rooted in the Scriptures.

Book True and Lasting Love

Download or read book True and Lasting Love written by Bernardo Leonard and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a must and essential book to have - "Le Meilleur" (the best). There is power in the words and gestures of Bernardo. It is impossible to read his work without being moved. He pours himself out before you and in your own heart you experience immediate contact and warmth. He transports you to a purer region, from which dogmas and mysteries descend. He loosened his words like arrows from the bow and his whole heart seems to fly with them. The pathetic, the profound, the sublime are side by side with the simple and the ordinary. What is most divine in the heart of a man cannot be expressed in writing. Yet this writer did. It has depth; it convicts. It causes one to re-evaluate oneself. Yet, dira la verite est beate (to tell the truth is beautiful). -Jean Paul (Screenwrite, Nice, France) A very thought provoking book to say the least. As Bernardo Leonard points out with sometimes painful clarity, there is no greater power on earth than love. The merging of earthly Love and theological support of that Love is accomplished without undue and unneccessary presure to "convert". Instead, the pressure exerted upon the reader is to "think"; hence thought provoking. As much as I tried to disagree with him on certain issues of forgiveness, I knew in my heart that Bernardo was right. We can fool some of the people some of the time, fool all of the people all of the time, but we can never fool ourselves at any time. When you know the truth in your heart, you know the truth. Period. To err is human; to forgive is divine. So much of humanity is so far removed from divine; reading and digesting this book will bring them closer. The reader can identify with each of Bernardo's Love filled and Love driven chapters, because every human being is in search of ONE thing, and only one thing --- LOVE. Some run the race claiming it's money or fame they are after; others claim this and still others claim that. Every one of us understands that the reason we lives is to Love and be Loved. Thank you Bernardo for putting these truths to paper. -Stan Brushwood (Tucson, Arizona)

Book Creating Lasting Value

Download or read book Creating Lasting Value written by Jeroen Geelhoed and published by Kogan Page Publishers. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consequences of a primary focus on shareholders over the last few decades has emphasized that that a new model of value creation is necessary. Today's economy demands organizations that create value, not only for shareholders but also for customers, employees, leaders and society. Businesses that face up to this challenge by focusing on all the stakeholders involved will be far more successful in the long term than those driven purely by seeking to deliver the maximum return on shareholder investment. Creating Lasting Value shows readers how to achieve lasting results by channeling efforts into three key areas. It demonstrates how to lead the value, manage the value, and market the value. The successful organizations of the future will be those that can put these principles into practice: this book shows you how.

Book Lasting City The Anatomy of Nostalgia

Download or read book Lasting City The Anatomy of Nostalgia written by James McCourt and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2013 A profoundly American work with distinct echoes of Samuel Beckett, Lasting City hypnotizes with its symphonic lyricism. Enjoined by his dying mother to "tell everything," James McCourt was liberated by this deathbed wish to do just that. The result is Lasting City, a gripping, uniquely McCourt invention: an operatic recollection that braids a nostalgic portrait of old-Irish New York with a boy’s funny, gutter-snipe precocity and hardly innocent coming-of-age in the 1940s and '50s. A literary outlaw in the poetic tradition of Verlaine and Baudelaire, McCourt tells his own story, his mother's, his family's, and that of a lost New York, the lasting city. While ostensibly an account of the author's first seven years, Lasting City expands into a philosophical exploration of memory, perhaps as daring a statement on perception as anything since Faulkner—a kaleidoscopic unraveling of time. Mating fact with fantasy, or fantasy with fact, McCourt takes us from his deeply moving bedside account of his mother Catherine’s death to its traumatic aftermaths both real and imagined, which are—as McCourt tells it—equally real. He revisits the fantasy city of his youth, sometimes in soliloquy, as well as in the plaintive threnody of an older man who recounts his tales of woe to a Hindu cabdriver named Pramit Banarjee on Broadway, only hours after leaving his mother’s bedside. By celebrating our powerlessness over memory, he explores the darkly intense Irish-American family romance and the love-hate relationship between an unusually bright boy and his eternally wise mother, who harbored an excruciating guilty secret. With Joycean panache, McCourt then takes us to the wake, where his aunts recall their sister as if they are the Fates; he has a late-night dialogue with a former showgirl turned hash-slinging waitress; and he then anticipates his own death with the some of the most lyrical cadences in recent literature, wondering whether his ashes will be scattered on the waters of that little rivulet emerging from Central Park's Ramble, where in his grandfather’s day, real Venetian gondoliers, imported from Venice, plied their trade. Reflecting McCourt's belief that "the perfectly diagrammed sentence has become the secret weapon of nice people," Lasting City, written as much for the ear as the reading eye, unfolds in multiple voices that are at times like theater and at times the reverie of a mind lost in memory. It is a heartfelt aria to a lost time and to an eternal city.

Book Firsting and Lasting

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jean M. Obrien
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press

Download or read book Firsting and Lasting written by Jean M. Obrien and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2010-05-10 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across nineteenth-century New England, antiquarians and community leaders wrote hundreds of local histories about the founding and growth of their cities and towns. Ranging from pamphlets to multivolume treatments, these narratives shared a preoccupation with establishing the region as the cradle of an Anglo-Saxon nation and the center of a modern American culture. They also insisted, often in mournful tones, that New England’s original inhabitants, the Indians, had become extinct, even though many Indians still lived in the very towns being chronicled. InFirsting and Lasting, Jean M. O’Brien argues that local histories became a primary means by which European Americans asserted their own modernity while denying it to Indian peoples. Erasing and then memorializing Indian peoples also served a more pragmatic colonial goal: refuting Indian claims to land and rights. Drawing on more than six hundred local histories from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island written between 1820 and 1880, as well as censuses, monuments, and accounts of historical pageants and commemorations, O’Brien explores how these narratives inculcated the myth of Indian extinction, a myth that has stubbornly remained in the American consciousness. In order to convince themselves that the Indians had vanished despite their continued presence, O’Brien finds that local historians and their readers embraced notions of racial purity rooted in the century’s scientific racism and saw living Indians as “mixed” and therefore no longer truly Indian. Adaptation to modern life on the part of Indian peoples was used as further evidence of their demise. Indians did not—and have not—accepted this effacement, and O’Brien details how Indians have resisted their erasure through narratives of their own. These debates and the rich and surprising history uncovered in O’Brien’s work continue to have a profound influence on discourses about race and indigenous rights.

Book Descent Ascent Transfiguration

Download or read book Descent Ascent Transfiguration written by C. N. Dudek and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of poems is a series categorized within each word of the title: Descent, Ascent, Transfiguration. The collection illuminates a disordered, darkened mind—akin to Hell—suffering leading toward joy, and finally breaking through to a transfiguring perspective of the world. The poems’ intent is Dantean, touching on the tensions of life, death, suffering and pain, despair, hope, sin, redemption, and grace. In some ways it is a Baroque work: fragmentary, beautiful, painful, yet hope shining through. There are poems dedicated to literary giants, such as Flannery O’Connor, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Tolkien, some Norse mythology, and beautiful natural imagery. It is a very personal collection, but speaks to many who have walked the rough trodden road lined with dragons and even a few pleasant inns along the way—a journey taken alone, but also with important edifying friendship that buoys the soul.
