Book Romantic Outlaws

Download or read book Romantic Outlaws written by Charlotte Gordon and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD WINNER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE SEATTLE TIMES This groundbreaking dual biography brings to life a pioneering English feminist and the daughter she never knew. Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley have each been the subject of numerous biographies, yet no one has ever examined their lives in one book—until now. In Romantic Outlaws, Charlotte Gordon reunites the trailblazing author who wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Woman and the Romantic visionary who gave the world Frankenstein—two courageous women who should have shared their lives, but instead shared a powerful literary and feminist legacy. In 1797, less than two weeks after giving birth to her second daughter, Mary Wollstonecraft died, and a remarkable life spent pushing against the boundaries of society’s expectations for women came to an end. But another was just beginning. Wollstonecraft’s daughter Mary was to follow a similarly audacious path. Both women had passionate relationships with several men, bore children out of wedlock, and chose to live in exile outside their native country. Each in her own time fought against the injustices women faced and wrote books that changed literary history. The private lives of both Marys were nothing less than the stuff of great Romantic drama, providing fabulous material for Charlotte Gordon, an accomplished historian and a gifted storyteller. Taking readers on a vivid journey across revolutionary France and Victorian England, she seamlessly interweaves the lives of her two protagonists in alternating chapters, creating a book that reads like a richly textured historical novel. Gordon also paints unforgettable portraits of the men in their lives, including the mercurial genius Percy Shelley, the unbridled libertine Lord Byron, and the brilliant radical William Godwin. “Brave, passionate, and visionary, they broke almost every rule there was to break,” Gordon writes of Wollstonecraft and Shelley. A truly revelatory biography, Romantic Outlaws reveals the defiant, creative lives of this daring mother-daughter pair who refused to be confined by the rigid conventions of their era. Praise for Romantic Outlaws “[An] impassioned dual biography . . . Gordon, alternating between the two chapter by chapter, binds their lives into a fascinating whole. She shows, in vivid detail, how mother influenced daughter, and how the daughter’s struggles mirrored the mother’s.”—The Boston Globe

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I'M FALLING FOR AN OUTLAW I HATE... MEGAN I wasn't supposed to end up in an outlaw biker's bed. I wasn't supposed to love it. I definitely wasn't supposed to crave his fiery kisses, beg for his touch, or ache to know the man behind the evil looking ink and scarred smirk. I was the good girl. He was the monster. Then everything changed. I became a prisoner. I prayed for Skin to save me. He did - and he kept me for himself. He's no saint, and I'm no angel. They've already taken so much from me. I'm scared he'll take what's left. Never love an outlaw, they said. I believed it. So why can't I stop myself from falling for this bad boy so hard I break? SKIN I went psycho when I saw her in that dirty whorehouse. She's everything I never wanted, a spitfire with a body meant for claiming. Then she told me her secret, and I almost needed a straitjacket. I saved her life instead. I gave her a second chance. I know she's a marked woman, caught between my club and the b*stards I killed. Damn if I won't make her wear my name, even if she's trouble on two long legs I can't stop picturing wrapped around me. I'll brand her, bed her, own her, no matter how much hell I'll pay. Outlaws love like ticking time bombs, and I'm gonna blow Meg's world apart 'til she's begging for more... The Outlaw Love books are stand alone romance novels featuring unique lovers and happy endings. No cliffhangers! This is Skin and Megan's story in the Deadly Pistols MC series.

Book Inlaws and Outlaws

Download or read book Inlaws and Outlaws written by Kathleen James and published by Australian Self Publishing Group. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Australia in 1971-72, there were 10,000 adoptions. In NSW in 1969, roughly 2,000 young women, most of them unmarried, gave up their children for adoption. Helen Armstrong, aged 17, fell pregnant that year and was persuaded to have her baby son Simon adopted out. This theme is closely based on Kathleen James’ own story. Helen still carries a buried grief. Birth mothers had no contact with their children, and only minimal initial information was ever provided. Years later when Helen is divorced and beginning a new phase of life, with a 19-year-old son Nick, she hopes for a reunion with Simon when he turns 21. At this time Helen falls in love with single parent Marco Lucini, and the family secrets of both the Armstrongs and the Lucinis gradually come to light. Helen learns a lot about her beloved Uncle Mick (a gambler and a ‘ladies’ man,’) who together with her Auntie Vera ran the Armstrong’s Family Hotel in Katoomba back in the 1930s. Finding out about Mick’s all too human failings and his troubled past helps her to come to terms with her own. Marco also learns how complicated families can be, when he discovers a whole new family of ‘outlaws’ in Italy, (‘outlaws’ being those parenting or born outside of marriage). The story takes us from a Sydney waterway to the NSW South Coast and Blue Mountains, and to Parma and Venice in Italy. The three narrators: Helen, Marco and Mick span two generations, in alternating chapters, giving the reader three different points of view. In its extensive exploration of adoption this novel gives a voice to the many women who, under the influence of others, gave up their babies and feel silenced by a sense of loss and shame. ‘Kathleen James deals with the issues of adoption with grace, sensitivity and sincere compassion. This is a wonderful read and personally it touched me on so many levels…. To bring to others the dilemma that is adoption with such understanding is a huge achievement.’ Penelope Wise, representative of the Adoptive Parents Association (APA) on the NSW Standing Committee on Adoption from 1977 to 1990.

Book excerpt: "The creator of the new composition in the arts is an outlaw until he is a classic", Gertrude Stein wrote in 1926. Unlike male modernists such as T. S. Eliot or Ezra Pound, the modernist women poets Edith Sitwell, Amy Lowell, Stein and H. D. never became "high" modernist models but remained "artistic outlaws". The present study shows how these women were present on the modernist scene but followed their own concepts and struggled to establish their position as modernist women poets. Defying definition, the four poets not only richly contributed to modernism, but were indeed its developers.

Download or read book Mother Outlaws written by Andrea O'Reilly and published by Canadian Scholars’ Press. This book was released on 2004-05-13 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminist scholars of motherhood distinguish between mothering and motherhood, and argue that the latter is a patriarchal institution that is oppressive to women. Few scholars, however, have considered how mothering, as a female defined and centred experience, may be a site of empowerment for women. This collection is the first to do so. Mother Outlaws examines how mothers imagine and implement theories and practices of mothering that are empowering to women. Central to this inquiry is the recognition that mothers and children benefit when the mother lives her life, and practices mothering, from a position of agency, authority, authenticity and autonomy.
