Book excerpt: Synopsis: Farook Bulsara was a boy of Persian heritage who never quite fit in to his skin or his teeth. It wasn’t until he became a young man that he discovered his talent and true nature, and was reborn as Freddie Mercury. After a brilliant career, with the arenas empty and the lights out, on the night of November 24, 1991, Freddie is forced to surrender his celebrity and face the frailty of his own humanity. As he succumbs to AIDS, the worldwide icon seeks redemption before a God unimpressed with celebrity. In his ultimate struggle to make sense of his grim fate, Mercury realizes that his fame, fortune, and talents are no longer enough to sustain him; that beyond the darkness of his fears, shines a light far brighter than the star he was on Earth. "MERCURY is a heartfelt, witty and poignant script."- Billboard "Messina's powerful one-man show focuses on the man rather than the music"-The New Yorker "A look into the complex psyche of a rock and roll legend. Download or read book Cloneliness written by Michael O'Sullivan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent posthuman philosophies, human-computer interface studies, and technology-inspired biopolitical discourses and practices are reinventing and reimagining loneliness in different communities. Cloneliness: The Reproduction of Loneliness takes a cross-cultural approach to loneliness by examining 20th-century artistic expressions and examinations of loneliness in the context of more recent global expressions grounded in social networks, virtual reality, the biopolitical commons, academic credentialization and such practices as Hikikomori. Newer forms of loneliness, pushed by the algorithms of biopolitical capitalism, result in what this books calls "cloneliness." Michael O'Sullivan plots the transformation in loneliness in literature and philosophy in readings that take us from Henry James and such classic works as Frank O'Connor's The Lonely Voice and Richard Yates's Eleven Kinds of Loneliness to more recent expressions in such writers as David Foster Wallace, Yiyun Li, and Sayaka Murata. Michael O'Sullivan argues that cloneliness as an institutional practice of reproduction in society nurtures, normalizes, and reproduces loneliness in order to create subjects who are more willing to accept ideologies of competition, “extreme individualism,” and the stresses of being "interconnected loners."

Download or read book Identity written by Mark Rowden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Rowden's first book, The Art of Identity was internationally recognized as a seminal work on the creation and definition of corporate identity. This much-revised and extended edition, simply titled Identity, offers further crucial knowledge about how to integrate identity into the wider commercial and financial objectives of the organization. Rowden's radical approach dispenses with common branding misconceptions and explains how to interrogate your strategy and objectives as never before through the relative weighting of three key 'averages': product, distribution and identity. He demonstrates how, by re-examining market position and values on this basis, you can redefine the content and focus of your identity, grading all visual and behavioural communications - an approach called, show tell do - into critical priorities, and then distill key values into firmwords, against which all communications can be rapidly focused as well as measured. The real examples in this book demonstrate firmwords in action. Later chapters illustrate issues of style, colour, names, logos, typefaces, structure, and how the challenges of fashion can be met. Identity also argues a new methodology for managing the creative process between the organization and its creative suppliers.
Download or read book A Faith of Their Own written by Lisa Pearce and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-07 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adding to the contributions made by Soul Searching and Souls in Transition--two books which revolutionized our understanding of the religious lives of young Americans--Lisa Pearce and Melinda Lundquist Denton here offer a new portrait of teenage faith. Drawing on the massive National Study of Youth and Religion's telephone surveys and in-depth interviews with more than 120 youth at two points in time, the authors chart the spiritual trajectory of American adolescents and young adults over a period of three years. Turning conventional wisdom on its head, the authors find that religion is an important force in the lives of most--though their involvement with religion changes over time, just as teenagers themselves do. Pearce and Denton weave in fascinating portraits of actual youth to give depth to mere numerical rankings of religiosity, which tend to prevail in large studies. One teenager might rarely attend a service, yet count herself profoundly religious; another might be deeply involved in a church's social world, yet claim to be "not, like, deep into the faith." They provide a new set of qualitative categories--Abiders, Assenters, Adapters, Avoiders, and Atheists--quoting from interviews to illuminate the shading between them. And, with their three-year study, they offer a rich understanding of the dynamic nature of faith in young people's lives during a period of rapid change in biology, personality, and social interaction. Not only do degrees of religiosity change, but so does its nature, whether expressed in institutional practices or personal belief. By presenting a new model of religious development and change, illustrated with compelling personal accounts of real teenagers, Pearce and Denton offer parents, scholars, and religious leaders a new guide for understanding religious development in teens.
