This book was released on 2002-11 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattering experiments, using X-ray, light and neutron sources (in historical order) are key techniques for studying structure and dynamics in systems containing colliods, polymers, surfactants and biological macromolecules, summarized here as soft condensed matter. The education in this field in Europe is very heterogeneous and frequently inadequate, which severely limits an efficient use of these methods, especially at large-scale facilities. The series of "Bombannes" schools and the completely revised and updated second edition of the lecture notes are devoted to a practical approach to current methodology of static and dynamic techiques. Basic information on data interpretation, on the complementarity of the different types of radiation, as well as information on recent applications and developments is presented. The aim is to avoid over - as well as under-exploitation of data.

Book Small Angle Scattering Neutrons X Rays Light from Complex Systems

Download or read book Small Angle Scattering Neutrons X Rays Light from Complex Systems written by Eugen Mircea Anitas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the basic physical phenomenon of small-angle scattering (SAS) of neutrons, x-rays or light from complex hierarchical nano- and micro-structures. The emphasis is on developing theoretical models for the material structure containing self-similar or fractal clusters. Within the suggested framework, key approaches for extracting structural information from experimental scattering data are investigated and presented in detail. The range of parameters which can be obtained pave the road towards a better understanding of the correlations between geometrical and various physical properties (electrical, magnetic, mechanical, optical, dynamical, transport etc.) in fractal nano- and micro-materials.

Book Neutrons X rays and Light

Download or read book Neutrons X rays and Light written by Peter Lindner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrons, X-rays, and Light: Scattering Methods Applied to Soft Condensed Matter, Second Edition addresses the possibilities provided by scattering techniques in the study of soft matter. It fills the gap between fundamental scattering processes, which are described by the general theoretical framework of elastic and quasi-elastic interaction of radiation with matter and state-of-the-art applications to specific soft matter systems. The first part of the book is dedicated to the use of general principles for the measurement and analysis of scattered intensity: elementary scattering process, data reduction, general theorems, and reciprocal space and its link to structural and dynamical information in direct space. In the second part, methods and techniques are further discussed, including resolution effects, contrast variation, static and dynamic light scattering, quasi-elastic neutron scattering, and reflectometry and grazing incidence techniques. Part three deals with the state of the art of scattering studies of typical soft matter systems (polymers, self-assembled surfactant systems, microemulsions, liquid crystals, colloids, aggregates, biological systems) with dedicated chapters for particle interactions, and modelling. Part four highlights special applications, from turbid media to scattering under external constraints, and industrial applications.

Book Correlation of Neutron Production to X Rays and Visible Light in a Dense Plasma Focus

Download or read book Correlation of Neutron Production to X Rays and Visible Light in a Dense Plasma Focus written by Craig M. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characteristics of neutron production from a 16-27 kJ plasma focus device were systematically studied for device parameters of bank energy, gas pressure, gas impurities and anode geometry. Neutron yields of 10 to the 9th power - to -10 to the 10th power per discharge were obtained with deuterium. Comparison of neutron and hard x-ray production was made using photomultiplier-plastic scintillator detectors. The axial neutron distribution was determined using a paraffin-polyethelene collimator. A good time correlation between the hard x-rays and the neutrons was observed. The dependence of the axial neutron source distribution on pressure was obtained and related to the shape of the collapsing plasma boundary. (Author).

Book Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation

Download or read book Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation written by Committee to Assess Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-03-23 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the seventh in a series of titles from the National Research Council that addresses the effects of exposure to low dose LET (Linear Energy Transfer) ionizing radiation and human health. Updating information previously presented in the 1990 publication, Health Effects of Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation: BEIR V, this book draws upon new data in both epidemiologic and experimental research. Ionizing radiation arises from both natural and man-made sources and at very high doses can produce damaging effects in human tissue that can be evident within days after exposure. However, it is the low-dose exposures that are the focus of this book. So-called “late” effects, such as cancer, are produced many years after the initial exposure. This book is among the first of its kind to include detailed risk estimates for cancer incidence in addition to cancer mortality. BEIR VII offers a full review of the available biological, biophysical, and epidemiological literature since the last BEIR report on the subject and develops the most up-to-date and comprehensive risk estimates for cancer and other health effects from exposure to low-level ionizing radiation.

Book Structure Determination by X Ray Crystallography

Download or read book Structure Determination by X Ray Crystallography written by M. Ladd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crystallography may be described as the science of the structure of materi als, using this word in its widest sense, and its ramifications are apparent over a broad front of current scientific endeavor. It is not surprising, therefore, to find that most universities offer some aspects of crystallography in their undergraduate courses in the physical sciences. It is the principal aim of this book to present an introduction to structure determination by X-ray crystal lography that is appropriate mainly to both final-year undergraduate studies in crystallography, chemistry, and chemical physics, and introductory post graduate work in this area of crystallography. We believe that the book will be of interest in other disciplines, such as physics, metallurgy, biochemistry, and geology, where crystallography has an important part to play. In the space of one book, it is not possible either to cover all aspects of crystallography or to treat all the subject matter completely rigorously. In particular, certain mathematical results are assumed in order that their applications may be discussed. At the end of each chapter, a short bibliog raphy is given, which may be used to extend the scope of the treatment given here. In addition, reference is made in the text to specific sources of information. We have chosen not to discuss experimental methods extensively, as we consider that this aspect of crystallography is best learned through practical experience, but an attempt has been made to simulate the interpretive side of experimental crystallography in both examples and exercises.
