Book A Closer Look at Neutrons in Nuclear and Radiological Engineering

Download or read book A Closer Look at Neutrons in Nuclear and Radiological Engineering written by V. P. Singh and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2021 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The neutron is an unstable nucleon outside the atomic nucleus; its mass is approximately 0.0014 times higher than the proton's mass and it plays an essential role in the atomic nucleus's stability. The neutron does not have an electric charge and interacts with matter causing numerous reactions. The above properties make the neutron essential in several areas. In nuclear power production, for instance, the neutron combined with the moderator plays a critical role. This book is a collection of works related to the neutron and its applications. Each chapter of this book's content is self-contained and is derived from the experience and research carried out by the authors. The book describes each aspect of neutrons ranging from their essential characteristics to their applications. Chapters of this book concern topics including the description of neutron characteristics, the challenge of neutron dosimetry, the ambient dose equivalent due to cosmic neutrons, the use of neutrons as an analytical tool through neutron activation analysis, the absorbed dose response of natural minerals which also have thermoluminescent features, and the use of neutrons in medicine to treat cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. The book also discusses topics such as neutron attenuation by super-alloys, neutron production in radiotherapy with electrons, the use of neutrons to detect explosives, and cloud computing technology for neutron dosimetry and spectrometry. This book would be handy for scientists, engineers, researchers, students, and practitioners in neutron studies and applications"--

Book Advancing Nuclear Medicine Through Innovation

Download or read book Advancing Nuclear Medicine Through Innovation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-09-11 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 20 million nuclear medicine procedures are carried out each year in the United States alone to diagnose and treat cancers, cardiovascular disease, and certain neurological disorders. Many of the advancements in nuclear medicine have been the result of research investments made during the past 50 years where these procedures are now a routine part of clinical care. Although nuclear medicine plays an important role in biomedical research and disease management, its promise is only beginning to be realized. Advancing Nuclear Medicine Through Innovation highlights the exciting emerging opportunities in nuclear medicine, which include assessing the efficacy of new drugs in development, individualizing treatment to the patient, and understanding the biology of human diseases. Health care and pharmaceutical professionals will be most interested in this book's examination of the challenges the field faces and its recommendations for ways to reduce these impediments.

Book Isotopes for Medicine and the Life Sciences

Download or read book Isotopes for Medicine and the Life Sciences written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-01-27 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radioactive isotopes and enriched stable isotopes are used widely in medicine, agriculture, industry, and science, where their application allows us to perform many tasks more accurately, more simply, less expensively, and more quickly than would otherwise be possible. Indeed, in many casesâ€"for example, biological tracersâ€"there is no alternative. In a stellar example of "technology transfer" that began before the term was popular, the Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessors has supported the development and application of isotopes and their transfer to the private sector. The DOE is now at an important crossroads: Isotope production has suffered as support for DOE's laboratories has declined. In response to a DOE request, this book is an intensive examination of isotope production and availability, including the education and training of those who will be needed to sustain the flow of radioactive and stable materials from their sources to the laboratories and medical care facilities in which they are used. Chapters include an examination of enriched stable isotopes; reactor and accelerator-produced radionuclides; partnerships among industries, national laboratories, and universities; and national isotope policy.

Book The Physics and Radiobiology of Fast Neutron Beams

Download or read book The Physics and Radiobiology of Fast Neutron Beams written by David K. Bewley and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-10-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over fifty years have passed since the first patient was treated with fast neutrons, but this form of therapy is still a matter of bitter dispute. Neutron generators have been installed in many countries and now patients can be treated with equipment that is technically similar to modern megavoltage x-ray equipment. The Physics and Radiobiology of Fast Neutron Beams presents a full discussion of the physical and radiobiological factors governing the production and use of fast neutron beams for therapy. The book discusses vastly improved neutron generators, advances in the standardization of dosimetric methods, and the specification of radiation quality. In addition, it explores nuclear methods of analysis, particularly neutron activation analysis in vivo. Influencing the place of radiotherapy with neutrons and other heavy particles, the radiobiological factors governing the treatment of cancer with radiation are examined. The author also studies the radiation hazard of neutrons, a matter of importance in the use of neutrons for chemical analysis in vivo. The Physics and Radiobiology of Fast Neutron Beams will be a valuable introduction to the subject for radiotherapists, medical physicists, radiographers, and radiobiologists new to the field. The book is also a useful summary of current knowledge for those already established in the use of fast neutrons for medical purposes.

Book Dental and Medical Applications of Thermal Neutron Radiography

Download or read book Dental and Medical Applications of Thermal Neutron Radiography written by William L. Parker and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron radiography will have similar unique applications in medicine as it has been shown to have in industrial radiography. Recent advances in industrial neutron radiography have shown that neutron radiography can in specific cases easily supply information which is not available with standard x-ray techniques. Unlike in X-radiography where beam attenuation increases regularly with the atomic weight of the material being radiographed, attenuation in thermal neutron radiography is a fairly random function of atomic number. This particularly strong attenuation of thermal neutrons by hydrogeneous materials should make neutron radiography of biological specimens complementary to X-radiography. The approach to the study of dental and medical applications of neutron radiography has concentrated on the following areas: Development of a neutron radiography facility at the Triga Mark I reactor at Reed College; Preliminary examination of photographic techniques for detecting neutrons; The study of anti scattering grids to filter scattered neutrons from the neutron beam transmitted by a specimen; The study of the use of contrast agents as a means of image enhancement; The study of radiation damage in rats subjected to low level neutron exposure.
