Book Neutrons and Related Gamma Ray Problems Neutronen und Verwandte Gammastrahlprobleme

Download or read book Neutrons and Related Gamma Ray Problems Neutronen und Verwandte Gammastrahlprobleme written by Edoardo Amaldi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 874 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 661 tures, such as occurs in stellar atmospheres and in thermonuc1ear processes, will not be considered 1. Because photoelectric absorption predominates completely at low photon energies, and penetration theory is elementary under these conditions, attention is directed in this artic1e to photon energies above ""20 kev. On the high energy side, this artic1e does not cover the cascade shower processes which are dealt 2 with in cosmic ray studies • In this connection it is recalled that the cascade shower process, which involves electrons and positrons besides X rays, becomes predominant above 10 Mev in heavy elements, and above 100 Mev in light ones. Theories developed for the study of cascade showers in cosmic rays rely on assumptions about the prob ability of interactions with matter which are adequate only at energies of the order of 1 Gev or more. Below this energy there is a gap in which penetration phenomena are qualitatively known and understood but have not yet been calculated in detail. A few detailed experimental studies which have been made at energies up to 300 Mev will be reviewed in this article.

Book Problems and Solutions in Nuclear Physics

Download or read book Problems and Solutions in Nuclear Physics written by Mouaiyad M. S Alabed and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book uses to help students that study nuclear physics. The book contains 242 tasks and solutions in different fields, involving nuclear physics such as accelerators (which accelerate the particles and calculate the relative mass and velocity of the particle), nuclear reactors, nuclear fission inside the reactor core, radioactivity, decay of the particle such as alpha and beta, and gamma decay. Many tasks that include the radiation doses. The book uses many of concepts such as: binding energy, kinetic energy and radius of nuclei, wavelength of the particle such as electron, proton and neutron. There are tasks about the density of nuclear material, heat equilibrium and collision, which occur between these particles and nuclei of the target, produce by these collision two types of scattering, they are elastic and inelastic scattering of the particle. The angle of the scattering plays an important role in the calculation of kinetic energy and momentum. The book also includes appendix with tables of physical constants related to these tasks. This is includes a table of radioactive isotopes. Student can be used this book to help him to develop his acknowledge of the many topics related to nuclear energy in general, and especially nuclear physics.

Book excerpt: Although the fission of heavy nuclei was discovered over 75 years ago, many problems and questions still remain to be addressed and answered. The reader will be presented with an old, but persistent problem of this field: The contradiction between Prompt Fission Neutron (PFN) spectra measured with differential (microscopic) experiments and integral (macroscopic and benchmark) experiments (the Micro-Macro problem). The difference in average energy is rather small ~3% but it is stable and we cannot explain the difference due to experimental uncertainties. Can we measure the PFN spectrum with high accuracy? How may we compare results of different experiments to provide better accuracy? Are our traditional theoretical models correct? What can be done to solve the Micro-Macro problem in future? These questions are discussed in this monograph for the reader. The current work will be of interest to graduate students and researchers, particularly those working in nuclear and neutron physics.

Book Solar Neutrons and Related Phenomena

Download or read book Solar Neutrons and Related Phenomena written by Lev Dorman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 912 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Historical Overview In the 1940s, two phenomena in the ?eld of cosmic rays (CR) forced scientists to think that the Sun is a powerful source of high-energy particles. One of these was discovered because of the daily solar variation of CR, which the maximum number of CR observed near noon (referring to the existence of continuous ?ux of CR from the direction of the Sun); this became the experimental basis of the theory that CR’s ́ originate from the Sun (or, for that matter, from within the solar system) (Alfven 1954). The second phenomenon was discovered when large ?uxes of high energy particles were detected from several solar ?ares, or solar CR. These are the - called ground level events (GLE), and were ?rst observed by ionization chambers shielded by 10 cm Pb (and detected mainly from the secondary muon-component CR that they caused) during the events of the 28th of February 1942, the 7th of March 1942, the 25th of July 1946, and the 19th of November 1949. The biggest such event was detected on the 23rd of February 1956 (see the detailed description in Chapters X and XI of Dorman, M1957). The ?rst phenomenon was investigated in detail in Dorman (M1957), by ?rst correcting experimental data on muon temperature effects and then by using coupling functions to determine the change in particle energy caused by the solar-diurnal CR variation.

Book The MORSE Code

Download or read book The MORSE Code written by and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MORSE code is a multipurpose neutron and gamma-ray transport Monte Carlo code. Through the use of multigroup cross sections, the solution of neutron, gamma-ray, or coupled neutron-gamma-ray problems may be obtained in either the forward or adjoint mode. Time dependence for both shielding and criticality problems is provided. General three-dimensional geometry, as well as specialized one-dimensional geometry descriptions, may be used with an albedo option available at any material surface. A detailed discussion of the relationship between forward and adjoint flux and collision densities, as well as a detailed description of the treatment of the angle of scattering, is given in the appendices. Logical flow charts for each subroutine add to the understanding of the code.
