Book Neutronics and Shielding Design of an Accelerator based Neutron Source for Neutron Activation Analysis

Download or read book Neutronics and Shielding Design of an Accelerator based Neutron Source for Neutron Activation Analysis written by Carl Alexander Willis and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Neutronics and radiation shielding of an accelerator-based neutron source (ABNS) for a neutron activation analysis application were designed with the aid of the Monte Carlo particle transport simulation package MCNP. Neutrons are generated in the proposed ABNS via the 7Li (p,n) reaction with 2.5 MeV protons from an RFQ-RFI linac. The neutronics comprise a polyethylene moderator and carousel--to hold sample vials undergoing activation analysis--and a graphite neutron reflector. Shielding to protect personnel consists of a commercially- available neutron-absorbing borated plastic surrounded by ordinary concrete. MCNP models show dependence in activating certain test nuclides on the thickness of the graphite reflector; based on the models, a choice for reflector dimensions is suggested. MCNP was also used to establish the position of the sample carousel about the target for optimal uniformity in activation of certain test nuclides, and to model activation of the ABNS components themselves. Finally, MCNP simulations of neutron and gamma shielding are presented relating shielding thickness to dose rates to personnel. Results are discussed in the context of conforming to ICRP and federal regulations for radiological worker protection, accounting for potentially large differences in system duty cycle among various users.

Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic and comprehensive introduction to fusion neutronics, covering all key topics from the fundamental theories and methodologies, as well as a wide range of fusion system designs and experiments. It is the first-ever book focusing on the subject of fusion neutronics research. Compared with other nuclear devices such as fission reactors and accelerators, fusion systems are normally characterized by their complex geometry and nuclear physics, which entail new challenges for neutronics such as complicated modeling, deep penetration, low simulation efficiency, multi-physics coupling, etc. The book focuses on the neutronic characteristics of fusion systems and introduces a series of theories and methodologies that were developed to address the challenges of fusion neutronics. Further, it introduces readers to the unique principles and procedures of neutronics design, experimental methodologies and methodologies for fusion systems. The book not only highlights the latest advances and trends in the field, but also draws on the experiences and skills collected in the author’s more than 40 years of research. To make it more accessible and enhance its practical value, various representative examples are included to illustrate the application and efficiency of the methods, designs and experimental techniques discussed.

Book Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes

Download or read book Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA Radiation Technology Repo. This book was released on 2012 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication addresses recent developments in neutron generator (NG) technology. It presents information on compact instruments with high neutron yield to be used for neutron activation analysis (NAA) and prompt gamma neutron activation analysis in combination with high count rate spectrometers. Traditional NGs have been shown to be effective for applications including borehole logging, homeland security, nuclear medicine and the on-line analysis of aluminium, coal and cement. Pulsed fast thermal neutron analysis, as well as tagged and timed neutron analysis, are additional techniques which can be applied using NG. Furthermore, NG can effectively be used for elemental analysis and is also effective for analysis of hidden materials by neutron radiography. Useful guidelines for developing NG based research laboratories are also provided in this publication.

Book Conceptual Neutronics Design of Neutron Factory as a Future Plan on Neutron Source in Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute KURRI

Download or read book Conceptual Neutronics Design of Neutron Factory as a Future Plan on Neutron Source in Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute KURRI written by H. Unesaki and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A synergetic system of a high energy proton accelerator and a spectrum controlled type research reactor is considered to be a main candidate of a future neutron source in Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute (KURRI). A study on a conceptual neutronics design has been performed for an accelerator driven subcritical reactor, which is expected to be a main facility for the joint use program as a substitute of the 5 MW research reactor (KUR). The neutron flux levels in several irradiation or experimental ports in the research reactor were examined through neutronics calculations when the reactor is operated either independently or in combination with the accelerator. In addition, preliminary studies were conducted to get information concerning the neutron pulse shape, the neutron multiplication and the power distribution in the accelerator driven system (ADS).

Book Aspects of a High Intensity Neutron Source

Download or read book Aspects of a High Intensity Neutron Source written by Peter Henry Chapman and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique methodology for creating a neutron source model was developed for deuterons and protons incident on solid phase beryllium and lithium targets. This model was then validated against experimental results already available in literature. The model was found to adequately characterize the deuteron reactions, subject to the end user's desired tolerances, but only marginally so for the proton reactions. A nonstandard, yet practical, application of such a neutron source model was demonstrated by conducting activation analysis for materials reasonably likely to be components in an accelerator based neutron source. This analysis consisted of inducing activation by exposure in the MITR-II 5 MW research reactor, and then adjusting the results based on the model's calculated neutron response. The analysis thus illustrated the utility of the source model in characterizing the system, enabling component design and evaluation before fabrication.

Book Accelerator based Intense Neutron Source for Materials R D

Download or read book Accelerator based Intense Neutron Source for Materials R D written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accelerator-based neutron sources for R D of materials in nuclear energy systems, including fusion reactors, can provide sufficient neutron flux, flux-volume, fluence and other attractive features for many aspects of materials research. The neutron spectrum produced from the D-Li reaction has been judged useful for many basic materials research problems, and to be a satisfactory approximation to that of the fusion process. The technology of high-intensity linear accelerators can readily be applied to provide the deuteron beam for the neutron source. Earlier applications included the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility and the Fusion Materials Irradiation Test facility prototype. The key features of today's advanced accelerator technology are presented to illustrate the present state-of-the-art in terms of improved understanding of basic physical principles and engineering technique, and to show how these advances can be applied to present demands in a timely manner. These features include how to produce an intense beam current with the high quality required to minimize beam losses along the accelerator and transport system that could cause maintenance difficulties, by controlling the beam emittance through proper choice of the operating frequency, balancing of the forces acting on the beam, and realization in practical hardware. A most interesting aspect for materials researchers is the increased flexibility and opportunities for experimental configurations that a modern accelerator-based source could add to the set of available tools. 8 refs., 5 figs.
