Book Calculated Proton induced Thick target Radionuclide Activation Yields and Neutron Yield Spectra for E

Download or read book Calculated Proton induced Thick target Radionuclide Activation Yields and Neutron Yield Spectra for E written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radionuclide production cross sections have been calculated with the GNASH code for protons below 50 MeV incident of on the stable nuclides of a range of elements common to accelerator materials. These elements include C, O, Ne, Al, Si, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and W. These data, augmented with limited measured data, have been used with the proton stopping cross-section data of Anderson and Ziegler to calculate thick-target yield values for the formation of a range of radionuclides in accelerator materials. Illustrative results are presented. GNASH calculations have also been made on a grid of proton energies below 50 MeV to produce differential cross sections describing angle-integrated neutron production spectra. The angular distribution systematics of Kalbach and Mann have been used to produce double-differential cross-section, which were used with the proton stopping data to produce anisotropic thick-target neutron yield spectra. Results are presented for 52-MeV protons on a thick target of Cu. Comparisons are made with results of HETC calculations, using cross sections from the intranuclear cascade plus evaporation model, and with thick-target neutron yield spectra measured by Nakamura, Fijii, and Shin. 15 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.

Book Thick Target Spallation Product Yields from 800 MeV Protons on Tungsten

Download or read book Thick Target Spallation Product Yields from 800 MeV Protons on Tungsten written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of newly-conceived accelerator based technologies will employ medium-energy particles stopping in thick targets to produce large numbers of neutrons. It is important to quantify the residual radionuclides in the target because one must understand what nuclei and decay gammas are produced in order to design adequate shielding, to estimate ultimate waste disposal problems, and to predict possible effects of accidental dispersion during operation. Because stopping-length targets are considered, radionuclide production must be known as a function of energy. Moreover, secondary particle production, mostly neutrons, implies a need to be able to calculate particle transport. To test the overall ability to calculate radionuclide yields, a thick-target measurement was carried out and the results compared to detailed calculations. Although numerous measurements of thin-target spallation yields have been made, there have been only a few measurements on thick systems. The most complete study showed results for Pb and U systems. In this contribution, the authors report on measurements made for a stopping-length W target. Special efforts were made to measure short-lived isotopes, and reliable data on isotopes with two or three minute half-lives were obtained.

Book Neutron Scattering Fundamentals

Download or read book Neutron Scattering Fundamentals written by Francisco J. Bermejo and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter reviews the most significant developments that have taken place in the design, construction, and operation of new neutron sources as well as the refurbishment programs of others already serving the neutron-scattering community. Such advances in neutron production devices are to be considered in conjunction with impressive achievements in the optimization of neutron delivery systems as well as in neutron instrumentation which overall resulted in a truly remarkable improvement in neutron count rates. As a result, the capabilities of experimental neutron sources are nowadays larger than ever before, despite there being fewer sources available. It is also worth remarking the coming into line of compact, accelerator-driven neutron sources as well as work carried out at small research reactors which, as exemplified during the past decade, have played an important role in helping the large, user-based facilities to carry out development work geared toward the achievement of full performance.

This book was released on 2006-07-24 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume in a series of lecture notes based on the highly s- cessful Euro Summer School on Exotic Beams that has been running yearly since 1993 (apart from 1999) and is planned to continue to do so. It is the aim of the School and these lecture notes to provide an introduction to - dioactive ion beam (RIB) physics at the level of graduate students and young postdocs starting out in the ?eld. Each volume will contain lectures covering a range of topics from nuclear theory to experiment to applications. Our understanding of atomic nuclei has undergone a major re-orientation over the past two decades and seen the emergence of an exciting ?eld of research: the study of exotic nuclei. The availability of energetic beams of short-lived nuclei, referred to as radioactive ion beams (RIBs), has opened the way to the study of the structure and dynamics of thousands of nuclear species never before observed in the laboratory. In its 2004 report “Persp- tives for Nuclear Physics Research in Europe in the Coming Decade and - yond”, the Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee (NuPECC) statesthatthe?eldofRIBphysicsisoneofthemostimportantdirectionsfor the future science programme in Europe. In 2005 it published its “Roadmap for Construction of Nuclear Physics Research Infrastructures in Europe”.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition represents an extensive revision of the ?rst edition, - though the motivation for the book and the intended audiences, as described inthepreviouspreface, remainthesame. Theoveralllengthhasbeenincreased substantially, with revised or expanded discussions of a number of topics, - cluding Yucca Mountain repository plans, new reactor designs, health e?ects of radiation, costs of electricity, and dangers from terrorism and weapons p- liferation. The overall status of nuclear power has changed rather little over the past eight years. Nuclear reactor construction remains at a very low ebb in much of the world, with the exception of Asia, while nuclear power’s share of the electricity supply continues to be about 75% in France and 20% in the United States. However, therearesignsofaheightenedinterestinconsideringpossible nuclear growth. In the late 1990s, the U. S. Department of Energy began new programs to stimulate research and planning for future reactors, and many candidate designs are now contending—at least on paper—to be the next generation leaders. Outside the United States, the commercial development ofthePebbleBedModularReactorisbeingpursuedinSouthAfrica,aFrench- German consortium has won an order from Finlandfor the long-plannedEPR (European Pressurized Water Reactor), and new reactors have been built or planned in Asia. In an unanticipated positive development for nuclear energy, the capacity factor of U. S. reactors has increased dramatically in recent years, and most operating reactors now appear headed for 20-year license renewals.

Book ISAC and ARIEL The TRIUMF Radioactive Beam Facilities and the Scientific Program

Download or read book ISAC and ARIEL The TRIUMF Radioactive Beam Facilities and the Scientific Program written by Jens Dilling and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The TRIUMF Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) facility uses the isotope separation on-line (ISOL) technique to produce rare-isotope beams (RIB). The ISOL system consists of a primary production beam, a target/ion source, a mass separator, and beam transport system. The rare isotopes produced during the interaction of the proton beam with the target nucleus are stopped in the bulk of the target material. They diffuse inside the target material matrix to the surface of the grain and then effuse to the ion source where they are ionized to form an ion beam that can be separated by mass and then guided to the experimental facilities.
