Book Neutron Structure New Results with CLAS at Jefferson Lab

Download or read book Neutron Structure New Results with CLAS at Jefferson Lab written by Sebastian Kuhn and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New measurements using the 6 GeV continuous electron beam and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab have collected information on the form factors and the unpolarized structure functions of the neutron, with minimal uncertainty from nuclear binding effects. One experiment has also tried to measure these binding effects more directly, using the method of ''spectator tagging''. These experiments are forerunners for an extensive program with the energy-upgraded 12 GeV accelerator at Jefferson Lab.

Book Neutron Spin Structure Study at Jefferson Lab Hall A

Download or read book Neutron Spin Structure Study at Jefferson Lab Hall A written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a high-intensity highly-polarized 6 GeV electron beam, and a high-density polarized 3He target, we have carried out a number of experiments to study the neutron spin structure at Hall A in Jefferson Lab. Taking advantage of the high luminosity of Jefferson Lab, we completed two inclusive deep-inelastic-scattering experiments this summer. In the first, precision measurements were made of the spin asymmetry A(superscript n)1 in the valence quark (high Bjorken x) region; and in the second, higher-twist effects were studied via precision measurements of g(superscript n)2. Physics motivation and preliminary results from the first experiment will be presented and discussed. I will also present nearly final results from an earlier experiment, which measured the generalized GDH sum for the neutron in the Q2 range of 0.1 to 1 GeV2. Planned near-term experiments will be briefly discussed.

Book Neutron Spin Structure Measurements in JLab Hall A

Download or read book Neutron Spin Structure Measurements in JLab Hall A written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent progress from Jefferson Lab has significantly improved our understanding of the nucleon spin structure in the high-x region. Results from two experiments in Hall A are presented. The first experiment is a precision measurement of the neutron spin asymmetry, A1(superscript n), in the high-x (valence quark) region. The results show for the first time that A1(superscript n) becomes positive at large x, strongly breaking SU(6) (spin-flavor) symmetry. The data trend is in good agreement with SU(6)-breaking valence quark models and with the fits to the previous world data. Combining the A1(superscript n) results with the world A1(superscript n) data, the up and down quark spin distributions in the nucleon were extracted. The results showed that for the proton the valence down quark spin is in the opposite direction from that of the proton, in disagreement with predictions of leading-order perturbative QCD models, which neglect quark orbital angular momentum.

Book Neutron Spin Structure Results from JLab Hall A

Download or read book Neutron Spin Structure Results from JLab Hall A written by Zein-Eddine Meziani and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My presentation will focus on some of the latest results of the neutron spin physics program at Jefferson Laboratory in Hall A using a polarized 3He target. This program includes several completed experiments in which the spin structure functions of 3He were measured. The covered kinematic regions were these measurements were performed include the low Q2 resonance and inelastic regions and the high Q2 deep inelastic region. These experiments offer a ground for testing our understanding of the strong regime of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) through the determination of the neutron spin-dependent structure functions and their moments.

Book Precision Exploration of Neutron Spin Structure at Jefferson Lab

Download or read book Precision Exploration of Neutron Spin Structure at Jefferson Lab written by Nilanga Liyanage and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spin structure functions provide basic information about the spin of the quark distributions inside the nucleon. Experimental understanding of the nucleon spin in the kinematic region where the three basic (''valence'') quarks dominate the nucleon wave function is still rather poor. Jefferson lab, with its high quality, high polarization continuous electron beam, and a high density polarized 3He target in experimental Hall A, provides the ideal opportunity to gather neutron spin structure data in the valence region with unprecedented precision. Two high precision neutron spin structure measurements were completed in Hall A last summer. The first experiment measured the spin asymmetry A1(N) in the valence region while in second experiment higher-twist effects were studied via measurements of gn2. The planed upgrade of Jefferson lab CEBAF accelerator to 12 GeV will significantly increase the accessible kinematic range and the precision of these measurements.

Book Experimental Moments of the Nucleon Structure Function F2

Download or read book Experimental Moments of the Nucleon Structure Function F2 written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental data on the F2 structure functions of the proton and deuteron, including recent results from CLAS at Jefferson Lab, have been used to construct their n=12 moments. A comprehensive analysis of the moments in terms of the operator product expansion has been performed to separate the moments into leading and higher twist contributions. Particular attention was paid to the issue of nuclear corrections in the deuteron, when extracting the neutron moments from data. The difference between the proton and neutron moments was compared directly with lattice QCD simulations. Combining leading twist moments of the neutron and proton we found the d/u ratio at x-1 approaching 0, although the precision of the data did not allow to exclude the 1/5 value. The higher twist components of the proton and neutron moments suggest that multi-parton correlations are isospin independent.

Book From Parity Violation to Hadronic Structure and more

Download or read book From Parity Violation to Hadronic Structure and more written by Serge Kox and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 50 years after the proposal of Lee and Young in 1956 to test the hypothesis of parity violation in weak interactions and the subsequent experimental verification of parity violation by C. S. Wu, parity violation has today become a useful property of weak interactions. This is due to the fact that the focus nowadays has changed: parity violation in weak interactions is no more a topic of investigation but is used as a tool in many different fields ranging from nuclear physics to the search for the hidden extra dimensions requested by string theory. For our first workshop which took place June 5-8, 2002, at the Institut fiir Ke- physik of the Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz, we concentrated on the in vestigation of the strangeness contribution in the nucleon. This book contains the refereed and selected papers of the second workshop "From Parity Violation to Hadron Structure and more (Part II)", which took place June 8-11, in the Labo- toire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie, in Grenoble. These papers appear in EPJAdirect, the electronic-only part of EPJA, and they are accessible without restrictions. They will also appear in printed form and can be ordered through Springer. The excellent presentations show the dramatic and steady progress in the accuracy of measured parity violating asymmetries over the last few years.

Download or read book GDH 2000 written by D. Drechsel and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of spin in general, and of the nucleon spin structure in particular, has been full of surprises. For the past 25 years deep inelastic lepton scattering has been studied to determine the carriers of the nucleon spin. However, it was realized only recently that a full understanding of the nucleon spin will also require detailed information on the helicity structure in the resonance region, i.e. in the realm of nonperturbative QCD.This volume gives a status report on the spin structure in the nucleon resonance region, focusing on: new experimental results from SLAC and HERMES; a first glance at the JLab experiments to map out the spin structure functions at low and intermediate four-momentum transfers; the pioneering experiment at MAMI (Mainz) to determine the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule for real photons; and recent theoretical concepts and investigations to describe the spin structure in the frameworks of higher twist expansion, phenomenological models and chiral perturbation theory.

Book Testing QCD Through Spin Observables in Nuclear Targets

Download or read book Testing QCD Through Spin Observables in Nuclear Targets written by Don G. Crabb and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited talks and contributed papers presented at the workshop on ?Testing QCD Through Spin Observables in Nuclear Targets?, held at the University of Virginia in April 2002.The workshop was proposed in the context of the large number of experiments that have used polarized deuterons or polarized 3He to extract information about the spin parameters of the neutron. The motivation for this workshop was to study the effects of the nuclear medium on the spin properties of the bound nucleon and to explore issues in QCD that might be resolved through spin observables in nuclear targets: What is the effect of the nuclear medium on the measured asymmetries? How have the latest results on the spin structure of the nucleon and the nucleon form factors changed our thinking? What advances are anticipated in the development of polarized targets?
