Book NEUTRON SPECTRUM MEASUREMENTS USING MULTIPLE THRESHOLD DETECTORS

Download or read book NEUTRON SPECTRUM MEASUREMENTS USING MULTIPLE THRESHOLD DETECTORS written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From American Nuclear Society Meeting, New York, Nov. 1963. The use of threshold detectors, which simultaneously undergo reactions with thermal neutrons and two or more fast neutron threshold reactions, was applied to measurements of the neutron spectrum in a reactor. A number of different materials were irradiated to determine the most practical ones for use as multiple threshold detectors. These results, as well as counting techniques and corrections, are presented. Some materials used include aluminum, alloys of Al -Ni, aluminum-- nickel oxides, and magesium orthophosphates. (auth).

Book Study of a Halpern type 4 pi Neutron Detector

Download or read book Study of a Halpern type 4 pi Neutron Detector written by H. M. Gerstenberg and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The response to various neutron spectra of a 2-inch diameter BF3 proportional counter in a Halpern-type geometry has been studied as a function of moderator thickness. Neutron sources used were a calibrated RaDBe(a,n) source and a series of photoneutron sources using a number of bremsstrahlung spectra. The reactions used were: 16PO(gamma,n), 31P(gamma,n) and d(gamma,n). For these sources absolute neutron yields were determined either from the residual B+ activity or from the known cross section and the absolute bremsstrahlung intensity. Using these empirical data a final detector with 13 BF3 counters was constructed. Over the spectral range covered by the above sources the measured efficiency for counting neutrons of the final detector was 9.6 percent with an estimated uncertainty of plus or minus 0.5 percent, independent of spectrum. The detector was used to measure the neutron yields from Pb, Au, Ta, Ho, Ag, Cu, Co, Ca, P, Al, O and C for a series of bremsstrahlung energies between 12.0 and 29.0 MeV. These yields were compared with those calculated from previously published neutron yield cross sections. The data indicate that previously reported discrepancies in neutron yield data can probably be traced to the determination of neutron detector efficiencies. (Author).

Book Derivation of Neutron Exposure Parameters from Threshold Detector Measurements

Download or read book Derivation of Neutron Exposure Parameters from Threshold Detector Measurements written by J. Grundl and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A procedure will be outlined which is appropriate for threshold detector measurements that have limited uncertainty information and/or are benchmark referenced. The derivation focuses on individual detector results and the option of coarse group spectrum adjustment when observed spectral indexes are in modest disagreement with the prediction of an a priori neutron spectrum of unknown accuracy. Characteristics of the procedure include a simple choice of error components, exclusion of intrinsic spectrum interpolations, and an explicit diagnosis of the effect upon the adjustment of individual detector response parameters. A sample problem is worked out in detail.

Book Fast Neutron Spectrum and Dose Rate in Water and in Aluminum water Laminations

Download or read book Fast Neutron Spectrum and Dose Rate in Water and in Aluminum water Laminations written by G. I. Coulbourn and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fast neutron spectrum was measured by seven threshold reaction detectors at various distances from a point fission neutron source in water and in two aluminum and water mixtures. The attenuation of the fast neutron dose rate and of the thermal neutron flux was also determined. The experimental results were compared with calculations made with the ANISN computer code. By use of experimentally determined counting efficiencies, absolute saturation activities of the threshold reaction products were determined. A method of neutron spectrum unfolding was devised which represented the fast neutron spectrum by a group of successive exponentials calculated from the saturation activities. The reported spectra generally agreed with the results predicted by the ANISN code. The fast neutron dose rate was measured directly with p-i-n silicon diode dosimeters and indirectly by applying flux-to-dose conversion factors to the measured fast neutron flux. Good agreement was obtained between these measurements and calculations. The saturation activities from the 32S(n, p) reaction were compared with the measured and calculated dose rates and an activity-to-dose-rate conversion factor was estimated. (Author).
