Book Measurement of Residual and Applied Stress Using Neutron Diffraction

Download or read book Measurement of Residual and Applied Stress Using Neutron Diffraction written by M.T. Hutchings and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accurate, absolute, and non-destructive measurement of residual stress fields within metallic, ceramic, and composite engineering components has been one of the major problems facing engineers for many years, and so the extension of X-ray methods to the use of neutrons represents a major advance. The technique utilizes the unique penetrating power of the neutron into most engineering materials, combined with the sensitivity of diffraction, to measure the separation of lattice planes within grains of polycrystalline engineering materials, thus providing an internal strain gauge. The strain is then converted to stress using calibrated elastic constants. It was just over ten years ago that the initial neutron diffraction measurements of residual stress were carried out, and during the ensuing decade measurements have commenced at most steady state reactors and pulsed sources around the world. So swift has been the development of the field that, in addition to fundamental scientific studies, commercial measurements have been made on industrial components for several years now. The use of neutrons is ideally suited to the determination of triaxial macrostress tensors, macrostress gradients, and microstresses in composites and multiphase alloys as well as deformed, plastically anisotropic metals and alloys. To date, it has been used to investigate welded and heat-treated industrial components, to characterize composites, to study the response of material under applied loads, to calibrate more portable methods such as ultrasonics, and to verify computer modelling calculations of residual and applied stress.

Book Local Structure from Diffraction

Download or read book Local Structure from Diffraction written by S.J.L. Billinge and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-04 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of books, which is published at the rate of about one per year, addresses fundamental problems in materials science. The contents cover a broad range of topics from small clusters of atoms to engineering materials and involve chemistry, physics, materials science and engineering, with length scales ranging from Ångstroms up to millimeters. The emphasis is on basic science rather than on applications. Each book focuses on a single area of current interest and brings together leading experts to give an up-to-date discussion of their work and the work of others. Each article contains enough references that the interested reader can access the relevant literature. Thanks are given to the Center for Fundamental Materials Research at Michigan State University for supporting this series. M.F. Thorpe, Series Editor E-mail: thorpe @ pa.msu.edu East Lansing, Michigan PREFACE One of the most challenging problems in the study of structure is to characterize the atomic short-range order in materials. Long-range order can be determined with a high degree of accuracy by analyzing Bragg peak positions and intensities in data from single crystals or powders. However, information about short-range order is contained in the diffuse scattering intensity. This is difficult to analyze because it is low in absolute intensity (though the integrated intensity may be significant) and widely spread in reciprocal space.

Book Neutron Scattering in Materials Science II Volume 376

Download or read book Neutron Scattering in Materials Science II Volume 376 written by Dan A. Neumann and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron scattering proves itself a highly international area of research as scientists and engineers from twenty-one countries come together in this volume - to discuss the growth and maturation of the use of neutrons as a probe in materials research and to survey current applications. A wide range of materials are examined, including polymers, cements, high-Tc superconducting oxides and carbides, inorganic glasses, magnetic films, ceramics and metallic alloys. Topics include: instrumentation at major neutron facilities in North America; developments in instrumentation and techniques; neutron reflectivity studies of surfaces and interfaces; small angle neutron scattering (SANS) studies of polymers and complex fluids; SANS studies of ceramics and metals; residual stress analysis; cementitious materials; high-Tc superconducting materials; interfaces, multilayers and nanocrystals of magnetic materials; oxide materials; inorganic glasses; alloys; and adsorbed systems, inelastic scattering and dynamics.

Book Neutron Scattering

Download or read book Neutron Scattering written by G. Kostorz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatise on Materials Science and Technology, Volume 15: Neutron Scattering shows how neutron scattering methods can be used to obtain important information on materials. The book discusses the general principles of neutron scattering; the techniques used in neutron crystallography; and the applications of nuclear and magnetic scattering. The text also describes the measurement of phonons, their role in phase transformations, and their behavior in the presence of crystal defects; and quasi-elastic scattering, with its special merits in the study of microscopic dynamical phenomena in solids and liquids. Special materials problems in neutron devices are also considered. Materials scientists, solid state physicists, physical chemists, and metallurgists will find the book invaluable.
