Book Depth Profiling of Tritium by Neutron Time of flight

Book excerpt: A method was developed to measure the depth profile of tritium implanted or absorbed in materials. The sample to be analyzed is bombarded with a pulsed proton beam and the energy of neutrons produced by the T(p, n) reaction is measured by the time-of-flight technique. From the neutron energy the depth in the target of the T atoms may be inferred. A sensitivity of 0.1 at. percent T or greater is possible. The technique is non-destructive and may be used with thick or radioactive host materials. Samples up to 20 [mu]m in thickness may be profiled with resolution limited by straggling of the proton beam for depths greater than 1 [mu]m. Deuterium depth profiling has been demonstrated using the D(d, n) reaction. The technique has been used to observe the behavior of an implantation spike of T produced by a 400 keV T beam stopping at a depth of 3 [mu]m in 11 [mu]m thick layers of Ti and TiH. The presence of H in the Ti lattice is observed to inhibit the diffusion of T through the lattice. Effects of the total hydrogen concentration (H + T) being forced above stoichiometry at the implantation site are suggested by the shapes of the implanation spikes. (auth).

Book Studying High Energy Density Plasmas Using Three dimensional Neutron Spectroscopy

This book was released on 2021 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A suite of 3D neutron time of flight (nTOF) detectors was deployed on the 60-beam, 30-kJ, 351-nm OMEGA laser and was used to study a variety of high energy density (HED) inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. Measurements of the primary deuterium-tritium (DT) and deuterium-deuterium (DD) neutron energy spectrum were made during DT cryogenic and gas-filled capsule laser direct-drive ICF implosion experiments, and the hot-spot plasma velocity, apparent ion temperature, and Gamow shift were inferred. Measurements of the scattered neutron energy spectrum in cryogenic ICF experiments were used to infer the compressed DT fuel layer's temperature, velocity, and areal density. The hot-spot velocity (~uhs), apparent ion temperature (Ti), and areal-density (pR) measurements were used to diagnose mode-one drive asymmetries in laser direct-drive implosions for the first time. Implosions with significant mode-one asymmetries were found to have large hot-spot velocities (>100 km/s) in a direction consistent with the hot-spot elongation observed in x-ray images, measured Ti asymmetry, and pR asymmetry. A novel mode one drive correction technique was developed and successfully used to correct mode-one drive asymmetries. When mode-one drive asymmetries are eliminated, more symmetric hot spots are observed with reduced ~uhs, Ti asymmetry, pR asymmetry, and increased fusion yield. The areal density, mean velocity, and temperature of the dense fuel layer were measured and used to study the residual kinetic energy in the shell. The mean velocity of the dense fuel layer was measured to be ~80 km/s for all implosion designs, while the apparent ion temperature of the dense fuel layer was observed to increase with the implosion velocity from 0.6-2.4 keV. The significant increase in the apparent temperature of the dense fuel layer with implosion velocity suggests an increase in the residual kinetic energy (RKE) of the shell with implosion velocity. These results are shown to be consistent with enhanced levels of shell decompression for high implosion velocity experiments. The Gamow shift and apparent ion temperature measurements were used to study the plasma ion velocity distribution in hydrodynamic and kinetic plasmas. The relationship between the plasma Gamow shift and apparent ion temperature was inconsistent with a Maxwellian plasma model for the most kinetic-like plasmas. The measurements from the kinetic like plasma were consistent with predictions from Vlasov-Fokker-Planck (VPF) simulations, which predict the presence of non-Maxwellian ion velocity distributions in the hot spot at peak neutron production. These data provide the first experimental evidence of non-Maxwellian ion distributions modifying the neutron spectra in ICF experiments."--Pages xv-xvi.
