Book excerpt: The subject of this thesis is to explore the neutron emission mechanisms in the fission process. In particular a long standing open question, the existence of a dynamical anisotropy in the centre of mass of the fission fragments and/or a possible scission neutron emission is explored. The thesis starts with an overview of the theoretical concepts on the fission process and on the neutron emission mechanisms. Also the necessity to conceive an appropriate analysis method is stressed when a very subtle mechanism is studied as various approximations and/or experimental biases not completely handled can hide the physical phenomena. In the presented work a huge effort was required to write a Monte Carlo procedure based on a coherent model for the spontaneous fission of 252Cf and to couple it with the devices exploited in the CORA3 experiment.

Book excerpt: Direct measurements of yields and neutron multiplicities were made for Sr-Nd, Zr-Ce, Mo-Ba, Ru-Xe, and Pd-Te from[gamma]-ray coincidence studies in spontaneous fission of[sup 252]Cf. Strong enhancement of the 7-10[nu] emission channels is seen in the Mo-Ba data. Unfolding the Mo-Ba data revealed a new fission mode associated with the enhanced[nu] yields with much lower total kinetic energy going by[sup 108]Mo-[sup 144]Ba, [sup 107]Mo-[sup 145]Ba, and/or[sup 106]Mo-[sup 146]Ba. Analysis indicates one or more of[sup 144,145,146]Ba are hyperdeformed with 3:1 axis ratio. Theoretical calculations predict a third minimum in the PES for[sup 252]Cf with[beta][sub 2][approximately] 0.9 and[beta][sub 3][approximately] 0.7. Zero neutron emission channels, a new form of cluster radioactivity, are seen in 8 and 7 correlated pairs in SF of[sup 252]Cf and[sup 242]Pu, respectively, with the odd-odd zero neutron channel yields strongly enhanced as predicted for cluster radioactivity. New level structures and isotopes include new octupole deformations, identical bands and other structures.

Book excerpt: The Precision Reactor Oscillation and SPECTrum (PROSPECT) experiment was designed to probe short baseline oscillations of electron antineutrinos in search of eV-scale sterile neutrinos and precisely measure the 235U reactor antineutrino spectrum from the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge national Laboratory (ORNL). The PROSPECT antineutrino detector (AD) provided excellent background rejection due to its segmented design and use of 6Li-loaded liquid scintillator for a neutron capture target. By tracking the neutron capture lifetime from cosmogenic neutrons and a 252Cf neutron source, we suspect the 6Li content of our scintillator changed over time. We look at this evolution and uncertainty in the PROSPECT oscillation and spectrum analyses. Additionally, the 252Cf source data taken with the PROSPECT AD for detector calibrations are used to make a new measurement on the neutron multiplicity probability distribution emitted during spontaneous fissions, with an average multiplicity of 3.81 ± 0.05 neutrons per fission.
