Book Neutron Interactions in the CUORE Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay Experiment

Download or read book Neutron Interactions in the CUORE Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinoless double beta decay (0vDBD) is a lepton-number violating process that can occur only for a massive Majorana neutrino. The search for 0vDBD is currently the only practical experimental way to determine whether neutrinos are identical to their own antiparticles (Majorana neutrinos) or have distinct particle and anti-particle states (Dirac neutrinos). In addition, the observation of 0vDBD can provide information about the absolute mass scale of the neutrino. The Cuoricino experiment was a sensitive search for 0vDBD, as well as a proof of principle for the next generation experiment, CUORE. CUORE will search for 0vDBD of 130Te with a ton-scale array of unenriched TeO2 bolometers. By increasing mass and decreasing the background for 0vDBD, the half-life sensitivity of CUORE will be a factor of twenty better than that of Cuoricino. The site for both of these experiments is the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, an underground laboratory with 3300 meters water equivalent rock overburden and a cosmic ray muon attenuation factor of 10-6. Because of the extreme low background requirements for CUORE, it is important that all potential sources of background in the 0vDBD peak region at 2530 keV are well understood. One potential source of background for CUORE comes from neutrons, which can be produced underground both by ([alpha], n) reactions and by fast cosmic ray muon interactions. Preliminary simulations by the CUORE collaboration indicate that these backgrounds will be negligible for CUORE. However, in order to accurately simulate the expected neutron background, it is important to understand the cross sections for neutron interactions with detector materials. In order to help refine these simulations, I have measured the gamma-ray production cross sections for interactions of neutrons on the abundant stable isotopes of Te using the GEANIE detector array at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. In addition, I have used the GEANIE data to set an upper limit for the production of a 2529 keV gamma-ray from the 126Te(n, n'[gamma]) reaction. This gamma-ray is a potential source of interference for the 0vDBD peak. Based on this measurement, the contribution of this line to the background is expected to be negligible.

Book Sixty Years of Double Beta Decay

Download or read book Sixty Years of Double Beta Decay written by H. V. Klapdor-Kleingrothaus and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 1324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear double beta decay is one of the most promising tools for probing beyond-the-standard-model physics on beyond-accelerator energy scales. It is already now probing the TeV scale, on which new physics should manifest itself according to theoretical expectations. Only in the early 1980s was it known that double beta decay yields information on the Majorana mass of the exchanged neutrino. At present, the sharpest bound for the electron neutrino mass arises from this process. It is only in the last 10 years that the much more far-reaching potential of double beta decay has been discovered. Today, the potential of double beta decay includes a broad range of topics that are equally relevant to particle physics and astrophysics, such as masses of heavy neutrinos, of sneutrinos, as SUSY models, compositeness, leptoquarks, left-right symmetric models, and tests of Lorentz symmetry and equivalence principle in the neutrino sector. Double beta decay has become indispensable nowadays for solving the problem of the neutrino mass spectrum and the structure of the neutrino mass matrix OCo together with present and future solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments. Some future double beta experiments (like GENIUS) will be capable to be simultaneously neutrino observatories for double beta decay and low-energy solar neutrinos, and observatories for cold dark matter of ultimate sensitivity. Book Neutrinoless Double beta Decay Search with CUORE and CUORE 0 Experiments

Download or read book Neutrinoless Double beta Decay Search with CUORE and CUORE 0 Experiments written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 3004 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decays. Observation of the process would unambiguously establish that neutrinos are Majorana particles and provide information on their absolute mass scale hierarchy. CUORE is now under construction and will consist of an array of 988 TeO2 crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK, but the first tower (CUORE-0) is already taking data. The experimental techniques used will be presented as well as the preliminary CUORE-0 results. The current status of the full-mass experiment and its expected sensitivity will then be discussed.

Book Implications of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

Download or read book Implications of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay written by Vivek Kumar Nautiyal and published by . This book was released on 2023-01-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinoless double beta decay is a hypothetical type of radioactive decay in which two neutrons in the nucleus of an atom simultaneously convert into protons, emitting two electrons and no neutrinos. The observation of neutrinoless double beta decay would have significant implications for our understanding of the nature of neutrinos and the properties of matter. It would prove that neutrinos are their own antiparticles (also known as Majorana particles) and that the total lepton number is not conserved. Additionally, it would provide information on the absolute mass scale of neutrinos, which is currently unknown. The observation of neutrinoless double beta decay would also have implications for our understanding of the matter-antimatter imbalance in the universe and the possible existence of physics beyond the standard model . The discovery of radioactivity by Henri Becquerel in 1896 opened a new dimension in the field of nuclear physics. Alpha, beta and gamma rays are the relics of radioactive decays, and their emissions are governed via strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions respectively. The energy spectrum of alpha and gamma decays are discrete in nature due to the emission of a single particle. In 1914, James Chadwick reported the continuous energy spectrum of beta radiation. In order to explain this continuous spectrum, Wolfgang Pauli proposed the emission of a chargeless and massless fermion along with beta particle and called it "neutron" . On 4ᵗʰ December 1930, Pauli wrote a letter to nuclear physicsts who were going to meet a few days later in Tiibingen, Germany, "Dear Radioactive Ladies and Gentlemen, As the bearer of these lines, to whom I graciously ask you to listen, ...... I have hit upon a desperate remedy to save the "exchange theorem" of statistics and the law of conservation of energy. Namely, the possibility that in the nuclei there could exist electrically neutral particles, which I will call neutrons, that have spin and obey the exclusion principle and that further di er from light quanta in that they do not tra el with the elocity o light. he mass o the neutrons should be of the same order of magnitude as the electron mass and in any e ent not larger than 0.01 proton mass. - he continuous beta spectrum would then make sense with the assumption that in beta decay, in addition to the electron, a neutron is emitted such that the sum o the energies of neutron and electron is constant...

Book Sensitivity of CUORE to Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

Download or read book Sensitivity of CUORE to Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we study the sensitivity of CUORE, a bolometric double-beta decay experiment under construction at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Two approaches to the computation of experimental sensitivity are discussed and compared, and the formulas and parameters used in the sensitivity estimates are provided. Assuming a background rate of 10−2 cts/(keV kg y), we find that, after 5 years of live time, CUORE will have a 1 [sigma] sensitivity to the neutrinoless double-beta decay half-life of {caret T{sup 0[nu]}{sub 1/2}}(1[sigma]) = 1.6x 1026 y and thus a potential to probe the effective Majorana neutrino mass down to 41-95 meV; the sensitivity at 1.64[sigma], which corresponds to 90% C.L., will be {caret T{sup 0[nu]}{sub 1/2}(1.64[sigma] }) = 9.5x1025 y. This range is compared with the claim of observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76Ge and the preferred range in the neutrino mass parameter space from oscillation results.

Download or read book CUORE and Beyond written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. With 741 kg of TeO2 crystals and an excellent energy resolution of 5 keV (0.2%) at the region of interest, CUORE will be one of the most competitive neutrinoless double beta decay experiments on the horizon. With five years of live time, CUORE projected neutrinoless double beta decay half-life sensitivity is 1.6 × 1026 y at 1[sigma] (9.5 × 1025 y at the 90% confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40-100 meV (50-130 meV). Further background rejection with auxiliary light detector can significantly improve the search sensitivity and competitiveness of bolometric detectors to fully explore the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy with 130Te and possibly other double beta decay candidate nuclei.

Download or read book Momentum Distributions written by Richard N. Silver and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the Workshop on Momentum Distributions held on October 24 to 26, 1988 at Argonne National Laboratory. This workshop was motivated by the enormous progress within the past few years in both experimental and theoretical studies of momentum distributions, by the growing recognition of the importance of momentum distributions to the characterization of quantum many-body systems, and especially by the realization that momentum distribution studies have much in common across the entire range of modern physics. Accordingly, the workshop was unique in that it brought together researchers in nuclear physics, electronic systems, quantum fluids and solids, and particle physics to address the common elements of momentum distribution studies. The topics dis cussed in the workshop spanned more than ten orders of magnitude range in charac teristic energy scales. The workshop included an extraordinary variety of interactions from Coulombic to hard core repulsive, from non-relativistic to extreme relativistic.
