This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was concerned with the measurement of neutron cross sections of importance to the Fast Breeder Reactor. The capture and total cross sections of fission products (/sup 101/ /sup 102/ /sup 104/Ru, /sup 143/ /sup 145/Nd, /sup 149/Sm, /sup 95/ /sup 97/Mo, Cs, Pr, Pd, /sup 107/Pd, /sup 99/Tc) and tag gases (Kr, /sup 78/ /sup 80/Kr) were measured up to 100 keV. Filtered neutron beams were used to measure the capture cross section of /sup 238/U (with an Fe filter) and the total cross section of Na (with a Na filter). A radioactive neutron capture detector was developed. A list of publications is included.

Book Fast Neutron Cross Section Measurements

Book excerpt: From its inception, the Nuclear Data Project at the University of Michigan has concentrated on two major objectives: (1) to carry out carefully controlled nuclear measurements of the highest possible reliability in support of the national nuclear data program, and (2) to provide an educational opportunity for students with interests in experimental nuclear science. The project has undergone a successful transition from a primary dependence on our photoneutron laboratory to one in which our current research is entirely based on a unique pulsed 14 MeV fast neutron facility. The new experimental facility is unique in its ability to provide nanosecond bursts of 14 MeV neutrons under conditions that are clean'' and as scatter-free as possible, and is the only one of its type currently in operation in the United States. It has been designed and put into operation primarily by graduate students, and has met or exceeded all of its important initial performance goals. We have reached the point of its routine operation, and most of the data are now in hand that will serve as the basis for the first two doctoral dissertations to be written by participating graduate students. Our initial results on double differential neutron cross sections will be presented at the May 1993 Fusion Reactor Technology Workshop. We are pleased to report that, after investing several years in equipment assembly and optimization, the project has now entered its data production'' phase.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time-of-flight technique was used with the ring scattering geometry in a laboratory with low neutron scattering background to measure the angular distributions of the cross sections for elastic and inelastic scattering of 14 MeV neutrons in natural chromium, iron, nickel, and niobium. Specifically for inelastic scattering included were: the 1.43 MeV and 4.56 MeV levels of 52Cr, the 0.85 MeV level, and (2.94-3.12) MeV and (4.46-4.51) MeV level groups of 56Fe, the 1.33 MeV level of 6°Ni combined with the 1.45 MeV level of 58Ni, and the 4.48 MeV level of 58Ni. Pulses of neutrons with time width of 0.9-1.1 ns were produced via the 3H(d, n)4He reaction in a 150 keV Cockcroft-Walton linear accelerator, with average intensities of 9x108 n/s. The energy of the incident neutrons was between 14.75 MeV (at 16°) and 13.48 MeV (at 160°). High purity scattering ring samples were used. The scattering angles ranged from (almost equal to)16° to (almost equal to)150°, for iron, chromium, and nickel, and from (almost equal to)16° to (almost equal to)160° for niobium, with a typical step of (almost equal to)10°. High purity ring samples were used.

Book Much Ado about Nothing

Book excerpt: The deep minima in 45Sc and 56Fe neutron total cross sections were measured at the Gaerttner Linac Laboratory by using thick, ultra-pure samples in transmission experiments. The samples are used to produce quasi-monoenergetic beams at the BNL High Flux Beam Reactor. For the 45Sc minimum near 2.05 keV we obtain sigma/sub total/ = 0.71 +- 0.03 barns, in sharp contrast to a previously reported value of approximately 0.05 barns. The 56Fe measurement was carried out with a 6 kg, 68.58-cm-long sample of 99.87% isotopically pure sample of 56Fe; a minimum cross section of 0.0085 +- 0.004 barns at 24.39 keV is inferred. This may be compared to a value of 0.420 barns for natural iron.

Book Measurement and Analysis of Neutron Cross Sections with the Oak Ridge Linear Accelerator Neutron Facility Progress Report April 1 1980 March 31 1981 Physics Dept SUNY Albany

Download or read book Measurement and Analysis of Neutron Cross Sections with the Oak Ridge Linear Accelerator Neutron Facility Progress Report April 1 1980 March 31 1981 Physics Dept SUNY Albany written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research involved the measurement, analysis, and interpretation of high-resolution neutron total and capture cross sections in the neutron energy range of few eV to few hundred keV with many nuclei. The extensive measurements of total and capture cross section in many nuclei (64Zn, 66Zn, 67Zn, 68Zn, 7°Zn, 57Fe, 58Fe) have been analyzed with an R-matrix multilevel multichannel code for the total cross section and LSFIT code for the capture cross sections. The results of these analyses have been reported. The measurements of total and capture cross section in nuclei also provide valuable data for nucleosynthesis of elements, and a better understanding of the neutron interaction with nuclei. These measurements in certain nuclei are equally important for their application in the reactor design. Some effort was also spent in modifying various computer programs of data transfer, and area and shape analysis of neutron total cross section data. Research results are sketched, and references are given to completed papers.
