Book Neutron and X ray Emission Time Measurements

Download or read book Neutron and X ray Emission Time Measurements written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser fusion targets can produce implosions with a delay between the peak compression (neutron emission) and the laser pulse on the order of 0.2 to 2.5 ns. We use a fast detector system to measure x-ray and D-T neutron emission times with a resolution of 100 to 200 ps. An NE111 fluor (quenched with 2% benzophenone) coupled to a microchannel plate photomultiplier tube detects the arrival of neutrons and x rays. A separate biplanar vacuum photodiode detects the arrival of unabsorbed laser light scattered from the target. These signals are mixed, then recorded on a 500 MHz transient digitizer. The discussion includes a description of the time interval system, experimental data, data analysis techniques, and system calibration.

Book Neutron Stars and NuSTAR

    Book Details:
  • Author : Varun B. Bhalerao
  • Publisher : Universal-Publishers
  • Release : 2012-11
  • ISBN : 1612339441
  • Pages : 170 pages

Download or read book Neutron Stars and NuSTAR written by Varun B. Bhalerao and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book centers around the study of neutron stars, especially those in massive binary systems. To this end, it has two distinct components: the observational study of neutron stars in massive binaries with a goal of measuring neutron star masses and participation in NuSTAR, the first imaging hard X-ray mission, one that is extremely well suited to the study of massive binaries and compact objects in our Galaxy. The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) is a NASA Small Explorer mission that will carry the first focusing high energy X-ray telescope to orbit. NuSTAR has an order-of-magnitude better angular resolution and has two orders of magnitude higher sensitivity than any currently orbiting hard X- ray telescope. I worked to develop, calibrate, and test CdZnTe detectors for NuSTAR. I describe the CdZnTe detectors in comprehensive detail here-from readout procedures to data analysis. Detailed calibration of detectors is necessary for analyzing astrophysical source data obtained by the NuSTAR. I discuss the design and implementation of an automated setup for calibrating flight detectors, followed by calibration procedures and results. Neutron stars are an excellent probe of fundamental physics. The maximum mass of a neutron star can put stringent constraints on the equation of state of matter at extreme pressures and densities. From an astrophysical perspective, there are several open questions in our understanding of neutron stars. What are the birth masses of neutron stars? How do they change in binary evolution? Are there multiple mechanisms for the formation of neutron stars? Measuring masses of neutron stars helps answer these questions. Neutron stars in high-mass X-ray binaries have masses close to their birth mass, providing an opportunity to disentangle the role of "nature" and "nurture" in the observed mass distributions. In 2006, masses had been measured for only six such objects, but this small sample showed the greatest diversity in masses among all classes of neutron star binaries. Intrigued by this diversity-which points to diverse birth masses-we undertook a systematic survey to measure the masses of neutron stars in nine high-mass X-ray binaries. In this book, I present results from this ongoing project.

Book Neutron Stars Black Holes and Binary X Ray Sources

Download or read book Neutron Stars Black Holes and Binary X Ray Sources written by H. Gursky and published by Springer. This book was released on 1975-08-31 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a set of articles based on a session of the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science held in San Francisco in February, 1974. The reason for the meeting arose from the need to communicate to the largest possible scientific community the dramatic advances which have been made in recent years in the understanding of collapsed objects: neutron stars and black holes. Thanks to an unprecedented resonance between X-ray, y-ray, radio and optical astronomy and important new theoretical developments in relativistic astro physics, a new deep understanding has been acquired of the physical processes oc curring in the late stages of evolution of stars. This knowledge may be one of the greatest conquests of man's understanding of nature in this century. This book aims to give an essential and up-to-date view in this field. The analysis of the physics and astrophysics of neutron stars and black holes is here attacked from both theoretical and experimental points of view. In the experimental field we range from the reviews and catalogues of galactic X-ray sources (R. Gursky and E. Schreier) and pulsars (E. Groth) to the observations of the optical counter part of X-ray sources (P. Boynton) to finally the recently discovered gamma-ray bursts (I. Strong) and pulse astronomy R. B. Partridge).

Book Isolated Neutron Stars From the Surface to the Interior

Download or read book Isolated Neutron Stars From the Surface to the Interior written by Silvia Zane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-22 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collation of the contributions presented at a major conference on isolated neutron stars held in London in April 2006. Forty years after the discovery of radio pulsars it presents an up-to-date description of the new vision of isolated neutron stars that has emerged in recent years. The great variety of isolated neutron stars, from pulsars to magnetars, is well covered by descriptions of recent observational results and presentations of the latest theoretical interpretation of these data.

Book Experimental neutron resonance spectroscopy

Download or read book Experimental neutron resonance spectroscopy written by J Harvey and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental Neutron Resonance Spectroscopy deals with the experimental technique of neutron resonance spectroscopy. Pulsed accelerator time-of-flight spectrometers and gamma rays from neutron capture in resonances are discussed. Total neutron cross section measurements are presented, along with neutron scattering and capture cross-section measurements and measurements on fissile nuclides. This book is comprised of five chapters and begins with an introduction to pulsed accelerator time-of-flight spectrometers with moderated continued neutron spectra, together with the pulsed Van De Graaff. Experimental techniques used for neutron cross section measurements, including detectors and data acquisition equipment, are then outlined. Scattering measurements and capture measurements as well as gamma-ray spectra from the capture of neutrons in resonances are considered. The final chapter focuses on the detailed and varied experiments that have been performed on the complicated fission process, together with the parameters of the resonances of the fissile nuclides. This monograph will be a useful resource for spectroscopists and physicists.

Book Measurements of the Neutron Emission Spectra from Spheres of N O W 235U 238U and 239Pu Pulsed by 14 MeV Neutrons

Download or read book Measurements of the Neutron Emission Spectra from Spheres of N O W 235U 238U and 239Pu Pulsed by 14 MeV Neutrons written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by new detector instrumentation that is insensitive to gamma-ray background and improved deuteron-beam bunching and sweeping of the ICT accelerator, we have measured the high-energy (2 less than E/sub n/ less than 15 MeV) neutron emission spectra from spherical targets of nitrogen, oxygen, tungsten, 235U, 238U, and 239Pu. The targets were pulsed at the center by a nominal 14-MeV neutron source at the LLL time-of-flight facility. The neutron source was obtained from the T(d, n)4He reaction with a pulsed 400-keV deuteron beam, produced by the LLL ICT accelerator. Collimated scintillation detectors at 26° and 120° with respect to the deutron beam and at flight paths from 7.5-9.8 m recorded the neutron time-of-flight spectra.

Book Handbook of X Ray Data
