Book Neutral Hydrogen in Local Group Dwarf Galaxies

Download or read book Neutral Hydrogen in Local Group Dwarf Galaxies written by Jana Grcevich and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gas content of the faintest and lowest mass dwarf galaxies provide means to study the evolution of these unique objects. The evolutionary histories of low mass dwarf galaxies are interesting in their own right, but may also provide insight into fundamental cosmological problems. These include the nature of dark matter, the disagreement between the number of observed Local Group dwarf galaxies and that predicted by lambda cold dark matter models, and the discrepancy between the observed census of baryonic matter in the Milky Way's environment and theoretical predictions. This thesis explores these questions by studying the neutral hydrogen (HI) component of dwarf galaxies. First, limits on the HI mass of the ultra-faint dwarfs are presented, and the HI content of all Local Group dwarf galaxies is examined from an environmental standpoint. We find that those Local Group dwarfs within 270 kpc of a massive host galaxy are deficient in HI as compared to those at larger galactocentric distances.

Book Atlas of Galactic Neutral Hydrogen

Download or read book Atlas of Galactic Neutral Hydrogen written by Dap Hartmann and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-02-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing maps showing the distribution of emissions from atomic hydrogen, this is an important reference source for astronomers in many different fields of research.Atomic hydrogen, the principal component of the interstellar medium, was measured over a 5-year period using the 25-meter radio telescope of the NFRA. Displayed in several projections, each map corresponds to a particular velocity interval.A CD-ROM also accompanies the Atlas, and contains the entire dataset of the Leiden/Dwingeloo survey, color images in GIF format, and animations displaying the 3-dimensional data cube.

Book Groups of Galaxies in the Nearby Universe

Download or read book Groups of Galaxies in the Nearby Universe written by Ivo Saviane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For every galaxy in the field or in clusters, there are about three galaxies in groups. The Milky Way itself resides in a group. Groups in the local universe offer the chance to study galaxies in environments characterized by strong interactions. In the cosmological context, groups trace large-scale structures better than clusters; the evolution of groups and clusters appears to be related. All these aspects of research are summarized in this book.

Book Toward the Virgo Cluster On the Study of Neutral Hydrogen in the Local Universe

Download or read book Toward the Virgo Cluster On the Study of Neutral Hydrogen in the Local Universe written by Brian Robert Kent and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A catalog of neutral hydrogen detections toward the Virgo cluster has been assembled. The data set uses observations from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey, a large extragalactic survey project using the new multi-beam receiver at the Arecibo Observatory. The survey is an ongoing effort and will eventually cover 7000 square degrees of high galactic latitude sky. The technical background, observing mode, and data reduction procedures will be described. The catalog of HI detections and their associated distributions and statistics will be discussed. A number of unique HI detections from the catalog appear to have interesting properties. Some appear associated with, but offset from, low surface brightness optical counterparts; others, at larger spatial offsets, may be tidally related to optical counterparts. Yet another class includes detections which are not identifiable with any optical emission available in online imaging databases. The preliminary ALFALFA results on these objects in the Virgo region, as well as followup aperture synthesis observations obtained with the Very Large Array, will be described. These gas-rich, optically dim objects are not detected in large numbers and are likely not primordial in nature. We explore scenarios pertaining to their origin from ram pressure stripping of large disk galaxies in a cluster environment. We also briefly discuss an HI mass function for the Virgo HI detections, as well as preliminary simulations of a disk galaxy moving at high speed through a cluster environment. The summary of results will include future endeavors with high-velocity clouds and mapping of galactic neutral hydrogen.
