It differs by 3.2 standard deviations from the Standard Model prediction to provide first evidence of CPT-invariant anomalous CP violation in the mixing of neutral B mesons, and is compared to the CP-violating phase obtained from a D0 analysis of the time-dependent decay angles in B{sub s}° → J/[psi][phi]. If CPT violation is allowed, the dimuon asymmetry also yields the first sensitivity to CPT violation in the B{sub s}° system.

The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Belle experiment is located in the KEK research centre (Japan) and is primarily devoted to the study of CP violation in the B meson sector. Belle is placed on the KEKB collider, one of the two currently running "B-meson factories", which produce Banti-B pairs. KEKB has created more than 150 million pairs in total, a world record for this kind of colliders. This large sample allows very precise measurements in the physics of beauty mesons. The present analysis falls within the framework of these precise measurements. One of the most remarkable phenomena in high-energy physics is the ability of weak interactions to couple a neutral meson to its anti-meson. In this work, we study the coupling of neutral B with neutral anti-B meson, which induces an oscillation of frequency _md we can measure accurately. Besides the interest of this phenomenon itself, this measurement plays an important role in the quest for the origin of CP violation. The standard model of electro-weak interactions does not include CP violation in a fully satisfactory way. The search for yet unexplained physical phenomena is, therefore, the main motivation of the Belle collaboration. Many measurements of _md have previously been performed. The present work, however, leads to a precision on _md that was never reached before. This is the result of the excellent performance of KEKB, and of an original approach that allows to considerably reduce background contamination of pertinent events. This approach was already successfully used by other collaborations, in slightly different conditions as here. The method we employed consists in the partial reconstruction of one of the B mesons through the decay channel ___D*(D0_)l_l, where only the information on the lepton l and the pion _ are used. The information on the other B meson of the initial Banti-B pair is extracted from a single high-energy lepton. The available sample of Banti-B pairs thus does not suffer from large reductions due to complete reconst.

Book excerpt: CP violation is one of the most subtle effects in the Standard Model of particle physics and may be the first clue to the physics that lies beyond. Charge conjugation, C, and parity, P, are symmetries of particle interactions. C corresponds to the operation of replacing a particle by its antiparticle, while P is the operation of mirror reflection. Before 1956, it was believed that these were also symmetries of the interactions of elementary particles. In 1956, C S Wu found evidence for P violation in the weak interaction. Theorists proposed that the combination of CP would be a symmetry of the weak interaction. In 1964, Christenson, Cronin, Fitch and Turlay found the first evidence for the violation of CP symmetry in the decays of kaons.Although Kobayashi and Maskawa then showed how the Standard Model can accommodate the observed CP violation, Wolfenstein pointed out that it is also possible that there is a new interaction in addition to the usual four, called the superweak interaction, which is responsible for the asymmetry. To test this idea, the observation of a different type of asymmetry, called direct CP violation, is required; in the kaon sector, very precise measurements of the ratio of kaon decay rates are necessary. In B decay modes where a second order weak process whimisically named “penguin” interferes with another suppressed, first order “tree” amplitude, it may also be possible to observe these direct CP-violating effects.B physics and CP violation is now one of the major growth areas in high energy physics. Nearly every major high energy physics laboratory now has a project underway to observe the large CP asymmetries expected in the B sector and to test the consistency of the Standard Model. The unitarity of the Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix in the Standard Model implies the existence of three phases, called alpha, beta and gamma, which can be determined by the measurements of CP asymmetries in B decays. About 200 participants gathered in Hawaii in March 1997 to discuss the progress in the field, and this important book constitutes the proceedings of that conference.

Results of a direct measurement of the CP-violation parameter sin 2[beta] using B[sup 0][yields] J/[psi]K[sub S][sup 0] with multi flavor tagging algorithms, a search for B[sub s][sup 0] -[bar B][sub s][sup 0] mixing using semileptonic decays, and the updated precision measurements of the B[sup 0] -[bar B][sup 0] mixing parameter will be presented. The prospects for B physics with the upgraded CDF detector in the next Tevatron Collider run will also be discussed.

Book excerpt: For a long time after the discovery in 1964, by Christenson, Cronin, Fitch and Turlay, that the long-lived neutral kaon decays both into three and into two pions, which has since been taken as proof of CP violation, successive new and more precise experiments confirmed the original evidence and provided results compatible with a phenomenological description confining the CP violation to the mixing between neutral kaons and antikaons. However the Standard Model, with three generations of quarks, linking as it does CP violation to the presence of a single non trivial phase in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix, implies that if CP violation exists at all, then it is a general property of weak interactions, appearing in transitions were amplitudes involving all three quark families interfere with each other, producing effects with a magnitude related to that of the CKM coefficients. This fact has stimulated an impressive amount of theoretical work leading in many cases to precise predictions. This publication reviews the field, from both the theoretical and experimental point of view, while planning for the forthcoming experimentation at LHC and considering possible new facilities for kaon, B meson and neutrino physics. There is a de?nite need to communicate these exciting developments to younger scientists, and therefore we organized a summer school in October 2000 on “CP Violation and Related Topics”, which was held in Prerow, a small Baltic Sea resort. Here we present in detail the method of same side tagging (SST), which is used to obtain new measurement of the {ital B}° mass difference [Delta]{ital m{sub d}} = 0.446 ± 0.057({ital stat}) + 0. 034 - 0.031({ital syst}) ps−1. The significance of SST and other tagging methods for physics during Run II of the Tevatron is discussed.
