Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brain and the Spirit invites readers to embark on a practice of listening to the Christ story through the earpiece of neuroscience. After many years steeped in brain science, the author had an unexpected encounter with a theologian, James Alison, whose trust in God and forgiveness toward others appeared to defy neurobiological explanation. How did his encounter with the Christ story produce in him the Christlike responses that it did? This question launched the author on a thrilling quest to listen to the scriptures and take up questions of creation, humanity, sin, Jesus, salvation, the Spirit, and the body of Christ, to hear what might get amplified by our ever-expanding understanding of the human brain. Readers are invited to eavesdrop on the twists and turns of the author's story and take up their own practice of listening to the Spirit, scripture and theology through the earpiece of neuroscience, and to become curious how the Christ story may spark trust which unlocks our brain's capacity to engage reality with relationality, kindness, creativity, and access to joy.

Book The Neuroscience of Spiritual Transformation

Download or read book The Neuroscience of Spiritual Transformation written by Ephraim T. Gwebu and published by Ephraim T. Gwebu. This book was released on with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Christians in the world live a life of contradictions. They are fully aware and thoroughly cognizant of what is expected of them and yet their practices do not reflect that. There is a need for spiritual transformation in these Christians. This book proposes that spiritual transformation has everything to do with our mind (brain function) control. It describes how a recently discovered brain phenomenon called neuroplasticity (brain malleability) can be harnessed to bring about spiritual transformation. The book identifies some incongruities (conflicts) in the life of a Christian. It then describes the brain as the pinnacle of God’s creation. Neurons (also called nerve cells) are the basic units of the brain. Neurons receive sensory input from the external world. For example, they send motor commands to our muscles to act, interpret what our ears hear and what our eyes see, and coordinate all the necessary functions of life. Their interactions define who we are as people created in the image of God. Neurons make this possible through a highly complex and sophisticated network (fibers) called neural pathways constituting what neuroscientist refer to as the NeuroverseTM; that is influenced by every thought we have, every challenge we encounter, every new perspective we become aware of, as well as every habit we develop.

Book The Physical Nature of Christian Life

Download or read book The Physical Nature of Christian Life written by Warren S. Brown and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-11 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the implications of recent insights in modern neuroscience for the church's view of spiritual formation. Science suggests that functions of the brain and body in collaboration with social experience, rather than a disembodied soul, provide physical basis for the mental capacities, interpersonal relations, and religious experiences of human beings. The realization that human beings are wholly physical, but with unique mental, relational and spiritual capacities, challenges traditional views of Christian life as defined by the care of souls, a view that leads to inwardness and individuality. Psychology and neuroscience suggest the importance of developmental openness, attachment, imitation and stories as tools in spiritual formation. Accordingly, the idea that care of embodied persons should be fundamentally social and communal sets new priorities for encouraging spiritual growth and building congregations.

Book The Neuroscience of Spiritual Transformation

Download or read book The Neuroscience of Spiritual Transformation written by Ephraim, T. Gwebu and published by Ephraim T. Gwebu. This book was released on 2022-12-17 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of us Christians suffer from the guilt of knowing that we are not following all that the LORD Jesus Christ has commanded. He says, “Do unto others as you would like them to do unto you.” (Matthew 7:12, KJV) Do we, as Christians, treat others the way that we would like to be treated? Also, the LORD has commanded us: “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 19:18, NIV) To what extent do Christians worldwide follow this command? We know the command but do not follow it. Thus, we are in a continuous struggle with ourselves, which results in the absence of love, joy, and peace. The average Christian lives a life of contradictions in that they know the right thing to do but does not do it. God created a malleable our brains with a that can be molded like a potter’s clay. This book describes in simple terms how the malleable brain is capable of being transformed to please God based on principles of neuroscience ( a study of the brain). The book shows that when the Christian focus is on Jesus Christ alone, spiritual transformation is inevitable. The book illustrates how the average Christian can focus on Jesus exclusively, using the Holy Spirit inspired power of brain malleability. It describes how when our minds are focused on Christ with intentions to please Him, the brain changes its networks producing God-pleasing Christians. The book shows how the brain networks may be a conduit by which the Holy Spirit facilitates repentance, sanctification, and spiritual transformation. In this book, an effort is made to illustrate how we can (i) be reshaped like the potter’s clay in the hands of Jesus, (ii) abide in Christ, (iii) have the mind of Christ, (iv) be transformed by the renewing of our minds, (v) be perfect as our Father is perfect, and (iv) have perfect peace through the amazing process of neuroplasticity that was implanted by the LORD Jesus in Genesis 1:26, 27. Based on discoveries in neuroscience, we now have a better idea of how the LORD Jesus Christ designed our brains to make it possible for us to choose to follow Him and for the Holy Spirit to superintend the structural and functional changes in the brain, supplanting old evil tendencies with desires to serve Him. The author ventures to define Sanctification as a process of becoming Christ-like every day through taking Holy Spirit-inspired micro-steps in Godliness facilitated by the Holy Spirit. These small steps include (a) Christ-centered self-talk (chapter 10), (b) acts of kindness and attunement (chapter 12), (c) mindfulness (chapter 7), (d) growth mindset (chapter 6), mindsight (chapter 8), (e) visualization of the glory of God (chapter 9) seen by Isaiah (Isa. 6:5) and Ezekiel (Eze1:1) and (f) creation of a Christ-centered brain environment orchestrated by the Holy Spirit. It is proposed that these micro steps facilitate the production of Christ-centered brain networks as the life-time of sanctification. This life-time activity that must be exercised regularly like a muscle for it to maintain its strength and dominance over the power of sin. The book proposes that the cumulative effect is a desire and determination to glorify and honor the LORD Jesus Christ is our daily walk with Him as guided by the Holy Spirit. The LORD calls upon Christians to be kind. The book describes the neuroscience of acts of kindness. An act of kindness causes the brain to produce a chemical that makes the kind person feel happy, warm, and fuzzy inside. Kindness brings happiness, thus contributing to one’s well-being. The book describes the neuroscience of humility and leadership. Commenting on the book, a theologian said that “it dovetails with different branches of theology. For those in Biblical theology, this book provides new avenues of reflecting on biblical passages. This is a book that provokes a Systematic theologian to reflect on topics like repentance, justification, sanctification, and sin. For those in Applied Theology, this book presents insights that can revolutionize our homiletics, counselling, church administration, and mission. It is not just another book on the shelf, this is the book that has been missing. The utility of this book is not limited to the seminary. This is the right tool for any parent who needs to understand the dynamics of behaviour formation among children. For those planning to conduct seminars on behaviour, this is a valuable resource.”

Book The Spirit of Christ in Human Brains and Neurosurgery

Download or read book The Spirit of Christ in Human Brains and Neurosurgery written by Ramsis F. Ghaly MD FACS and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-06-07 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no doubt in my mind that the Spirit of God is connected to the human brain within the skull. The human brain is not limited to the boundaries of the skull. Instead, it goes beyond the physical barriers of our planet and into the spiritual world. My Christian faith, as a Coptic Egyptian Orthodox, was the main reason I chose to be a neurosurgeon. It is in this way how my soul becomes closer to Lord Jesus Christ. I have devoted my life and withstood a very long journey in medicine and neuroscience, leaving my home country of Egypt and coming to America to strive in the difficult fields of neurological surgery, neuroscience, and anesthesiology. Every day my soul learns more and more about my Lord Jesus. I see him in my patients, in my surgeries, and in my surroundings. Deep within the brain lies the Spirit of Christ. As the author, I explore not only the connectivity of the human brain with the Spirit of God but also the Spirit of Christ in my neurosurgery practice. My human brain continues to be both thirsty and hungry for more and more of his eternal love. In this present book of sixty-five chapters, much of my soul I wish to share with you, the beloved reader. A section is designated to my most recent neurosurgery patients testimonials and experiences. Another section reflects upon the biblical words used during President Donald Trumps inauguration and Melanias speech and the presidents visit to the Middle East for peace.

Book Mind Wide Open

  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Mind Wide Open written by Steven Johnson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2004-02-27 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BRILLIANTLY EXPLORING TODAY'S CUTTING-EDGE BRAIN RESEARCH, MIND WIDE OPEN IS AN UNPRECEDENTED JOURNEY INTO THE ESSENCE OF HUMAN PERSONALITY, ALLOWING READERS TO UNDERSTAND THEMSELVES AND THE PEOPLE IN THEIR LIVES AS NEVER BEFORE. Using a mix of experiential reportage, personal storytelling, and fresh scientific discovery, Steven Johnson describes how the brain works -- its chemicals, structures, and subroutines -- and how these systems connect to the day-to-day realities of individual lives. For a hundred years, he says, many of us have assumed that the most powerful route to self-knowledge took the form of lying on a couch, talking about our childhoods. The possibility entertained in this book is that you can follow another path, in which learning about the brain's mechanics can widen one's self-awareness as powerfully as any therapy or meditation or drug. In Mind Wide Open, Johnson embarks on this path as his own test subject, participating in a battery of attention tests, learning to control video games by altering his brain waves, scanning his own brain with a $2 million fMRI machine, all in search of a modern answer to the oldest of questions: who am I? Along the way, Johnson explores how we "read" other people, how the brain processes frightening events (and how we might rid ourselves of the scars those memories leave), what the neurochemistry is behind love and sex, what it means that our brains are teeming with powerful chemicals closely related to recreational drugs, why music moves us to tears, and where our breakthrough ideas come from. Johnson's clear, engaging explanation of the physical functions of the brain reveals not only the broad strokes of our aptitudes and fears, our skills and weaknesses and desires, but also the momentary brain phenomena that a whole human life comprises. Why, when hearing a tale of woe, do we sometimes smile inappropriately, even if we don't want to? Why are some of us so bad at remembering phone numbers but brilliant at recognizing faces? Why does depression make us feel stupid? To read Mind Wide Open is to rethink family histories, individual fates, and the very nature of the self, and to see that brain science is now personally transformative -- a valuable tool for better relationships and better living.

Book Nerve Endings of the Soul

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. Stan Lennard M.D. Sc.D.
  • Publisher : WestBow Press
  • Release : 2018-01-22
  • ISBN : 1973614324
  • Pages : 164 pages

Download or read book Nerve Endings of the Soul written by E. Stan Lennard M.D. Sc.D. and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a common belief that personal communion from the Holy Spirit to mankind ceased at the closure of the canon of scripture. The information presented in this book shows that interaction between the Holy Spirit and the mind of man enabled by the human spirit is bidirectional and continues in our time. Evidence presented from theological and scientific resources confirms the duality of the immaterial mind and the physical brain of man and substantiates the personal interaction between the Holy Spirit and the mind of human beings. The model for study is the neural synaptic network, incorporating the microsite hypothesis of Sir John C. Eccles. Dualist interaction has been substantiated by contemporary theologians and investigators in the neurosciences and information theory, building on advances in quantum wave theory. A hypothesis is offered by this author for a mechanism for dualist interaction involving probabilistic quantum tunneling across synaptic clefts. Transmission of specified information with meaning and purpose occurs within neural codes in spike trains of action potentials in synaptic networks. Through a lifetime of learning archived in memory, the mind of humans interprets neural codes enabled by the unique capacity for language. Communication from the Holy Spirit, as sender, to human minds, as recipients, draws upon current understandings of information and communication theory. The trigger for initiating spike trains as codes is postulated as an immaterial energy source by which the Holy Spirit communicates with the mind of man. Evidence presented in this book provides a compelling rationale for the reality of bidirectional communication with the living, personal Holy Spirit in our time. That Jesus Christ indwells those who accept his truth as a personal, living spirit is confirmation of the promise in John 14:1521. Interaction with God by his atoning grace through Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit gives receptive mankind comfort and counsel today to his glory.

But biblical evidence and modern brain science show that our character is shaped more by whom we love than what we believe. Through conversations he had with Dallas Willard at the Heart & Soul Conference shortly before Dallas's death, Jim Wilder shows how we can train our brains to relate to God based on joyful, mutual attachment--which leads to emotional and spiritual maturity as our identity and character are formed by our relationship with God.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2012 A bold approach to understanding the American evangelical experience from an anthropological and psychological perspective by one of the country's most prominent anthropologists. Through a series of intimate, illuminating interviews with various members of the Vineyard, an evangelical church with hundreds of congregations across the country, Tanya Luhrmann leaps into the heart of evangelical faith. Combined with scientific research that studies the effect that intensely practiced prayer can have on the mind, When God Talks Back examines how normal, sensible people—from college students to accountants to housewives, all functioning perfectly well within our society—can attest to having the signs and wonders of the supernatural become as quotidian and as ordinary as laundry. Astute, sensitive, and extraordinarily measured in its approach to the interface between science and religion, Luhrmann's book is sure to generate as much conversation as it will praise.
