The papers explore advances in the understanding of neuropsychopharmacology and cover topics ranging from anti-schizophrenic drugs to drug pathways in depression treatment. Pharmacological interferences with nonstriatal dopaminergic systems are also discussed. This volume is comprised of 21 chapters and opens by considering the nanomolar affinity of pre- and post-synaptic dopamine receptors for neuroleptics. The next section deals with drug pathways in the treatment of depression, with particular reference to the biochemical mechanisms of depressive states and the therapeutic effects of some antidepressants. Many clinicians have been trained at a time when knowledge of clinical psychopharmacology was super ficial at best, and recent trainees do not necessarily have access to newer, con stantly changing, relevant information. The busy clinician is frequently depen dent upon the limited knowledge dispensed by the drug company representatives and naturally shys away from many of the more esoteric contributions appearing in the literature. Because of the foregoing issues, the Executive of the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry of the University of Toronto, with the financial support of the Ministry of Health of the Government of Ontario, organized an inter national symposium on May 14-17, 1982, to bring together some of the acknowledged experts in clinical psychopharmacology. This book is, in part, a reflection of that symposium. The editors are aware that a contributed volume, however tightly edited, is not necessarily a textbook. Notwithstanding this, it was thought to be important to assemble expert opinion on current important issues, of immediate concern to the practicing clinician. With this in mind, the chapters have been organized around five themes. Schizophrenia, Affective disorders, and Anxiety, are clearly important since they are the major targets of drug use in psychiatry.

Book excerpt: The vast growth of knowledge in recent years concerning the functional role of serotonergic systems in central nervous system function prompted the organization of the symposium. The organiz ing committees felt at the onset that the field of serotonin research had grown so rapidly that it would be impossible to cover every aspect of it in individual symposia. Thus it was felt that certain areas of research had to be omitted due to time constraints, and we extend an apology to the researchers in areas not included in these proceedings. Rather it was hoped to provide a balance overview of the field, starting with the anatomy of serotonergic systems and proceeding to the level of the serotonergic receptors at the cell membrane, and then inside the neuron to discuss the regulation of serotonin bisynthesis and integration within indole mine systems. The functional aspects of serotonergic transmission focused on the emerging role of this amine in the processing of nociceptive information, singly or in tandem with other neurotran smitters or neuromodulators. A separate symposium dealt with a variety of animal models suitable for the analysis of the role of serotonin in behavior, and finally led to the evaluation of serotonin metabolism in the study of abnormal human behavior. The editors would like to dedicate these proceedings on /Serotonin - Current Aspects of Neurochemistry and Function/ to two pioneers in this field, Dr. Irving Page and Dr. Maurice Rapport.
