Book Neuroimunomodulation in Health and Disease II

Download or read book Neuroimunomodulation in Health and Disease II written by Adriana del Rey and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of two Annals volume (see also Volume 1262) of papers by speakers at the 8th International Society for Neuroimmodulation Congress held in Dresden, Germany, October 2011. The papers focus on interactions among the immune, endocrine, and nervous systems that occur at multiple levels, from intracellular pathways by immune and neuro-endocrine mediators, to the exchange of information between the three systems that results in physiologic and adaptive effects. In certain instances, however, these interactions may be unbalanced or even disrupted, which can contribute to pathology, and aspects of such pathobiology are presented in some of the contributions. This volume aims focuses on translational science aspects of immune-neuro-endocrine interactions. NOTE: Annals volumes are available for sale as individual books or as a journal. Download or read book Neuroimmunomodulation in Health and Disease written by International Society for Neuroimmunomodulation. Congress and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Many studies have now illustrated the importance of the equilibrium between the interacting immune, nervous, and endocrine systems for integrated physiology and homeostasis, and alterations in this equilibrium are implicated in the pathogenesis of several autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. This Annals volume presents recent research discussed at the 9th Congress of the International Society for Neuroimmunomodulation, held on September 25-27, 2014, in Liege, Belgium, which brought together international academic and industry scientists studying the communication and regulatory mechanisms integrating the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems in both health and disease. The papers in this volume cover a range of topics in neuroimmunomodulation, including inflammation, gastrointestinal physiology, and behavior; inflammatory mediators and chronic pain; metabolic and neuroendocrine disorders in HIV; cytokines/chemokines in the central and peripheral nervous system; glia and neuroinflammation; therapeutic interventions in neuroimmunological diseases; aging and neuroimmunomodulation; epigenetics, inflammation, and mental health; stress and immunity; and psychiatric disorders and immunity."--Résumé de l'éditeur.

Book Stress Challenges and Immunity in Space

Download or read book Stress Challenges and Immunity in Space written by Alexander Choukèr and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how stress – either psychological or physical – can activate and/or paralyse human innate or adaptive immunity. Adequate immunity is crucial for maintaining health, both on Earth and in space. During space flight, human physiology is specifically challenged by complex environmental stressors, which are most pronounced during lunar or interplanetary missions. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the book identifies the impact of these stressors – the space exposome – on immunity as a result of (dys-)functions of specific cells, organs and organ networks. These conditions (e.g. gravitation changes, radiation, isolation/confinement) affect immunity, but at the same time provide insights that may help to prevent, diagnose and address immune-related health alterations. Written by experts from academia, space agencies and industry, the book is a valuable resource for professionals, researchers and students in the field of medicine, biology and technology. The chapters “The Impact of Everyday Stressors on the Immune System and Health”, “Stress and Radiation Responsiveness” and “Assessment of Radiosensitivity and Biomonitoring of Exposure to Space adiation” are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

  • ISBN : 3318060143
  • Pages : 190 pages

Download or read book Endocrine Immunology written by W. Savino and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decades, several in vitro and in vivo studies have revealed the existence of a very complex network between the neuroendocrine and immune system. Important molecular mechanisms underlying these interactions, in both physiological and pathological conditions, have also been described. Indeed, hormones play a pivotal role in the development and functional regulation of the immune system – both innate and acquired responses. Immune system cells present specific hormone receptors and themselves produce some hormones, thus influencing hormone secretion. More recently, the modulation of hormone secretion has been attempted for treating associated autoimmune disorders, further supporting the strong interplay between the endocrine and immune system. Distinguished experts, who have published extensively in their fields, have contributed comprehensive chapters to this volume. The focus is on the various aspects of endocrine-neuro-immune connections, providing an updated panorama - from basics to clinical applications - of current knowledge and still debated issues.

Book Tuberculosis and War

    Book Details:
  • Author : J.F. Murray
  • Publisher : Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers
  • Release : 2018-03-27
  • ISBN : 331806095X
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Tuberculosis and War written by J.F. Murray and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tuberculosis (TB) remains the largest cause of adult deaths from any single infectious disease, and ranks among the top 10 causes of death worldwide. When TB and war occur simultaneously, the inevitable consequences are disease, human misery, suffering, and heightened mortality. TB is, therefore, one of the most frequent and deadly diseases to complicate the special circumstances of warfare. Written by internationally acclaimed experts, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of the status of TB before, during and after WWII in the 25 belligerent countries that were chiefly involved. It summarizes the history of TB up to the present day. A special chapter on “Nazi Medicine, Tuberculosis and Genocide” examines the horrendous, inhuman Nazi ideology, which during WWII used TB as a justification for murder, and targeted the disease by eradicating millions who were afflicted by it. The final chapter summarizes the lessons learned from WWII and more recent wars and recommends anti-TB measures for future conflicts. This publication is not only of interest to TB specialists and pulmonologists but also to those interested in public health, infectious diseases, war-related issues and the history of medicine. It should also appeal to nonmedical readers like journalists and politicians.

Book Handbook of Human Stress and Immunity

Download or read book Handbook of Human Stress and Immunity written by Ronald Glaser and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1964, George Solomon coined the term psychoneuroimmunology. In the intervening 30 years, this term has emerged into a dynamic field of study which investigates the unique interactions between the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. The Handbook of Human Stress and Immunity is a comprehensive reference for this dynamic new field. Focusing on how stressors impact the central nervous system and the resulting changes in immune responses, the Handbook is the first to describehow stress specifically affects human immune systems. It discusses how stress generally makes people more susceptible to infection, how personal support systems can counteract the physiological effects of stress, and how stress, or lack of stress, affects the aging process. Chapters are authored by the leading names in the field and cover such diseases as autoimmune disease, viral pathogenesis, herpes, HIV, and AIDS.
