Book Neuroendocrine Perspectives

Download or read book Neuroendocrine Perspectives written by Eugenio E. Müller and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuroendocrine Perspectives, Volume 3 provides information on amine and peptide biochemistry. This book discusses the availability of specific biochemical and histochemical techniques that have greatly advanced knowledge of central nervous system neurotransmitter and neuropeptide systems. Organized into nine chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the structure of corticotropin releasing hormone. This text then examines the possible role of the cerebrospinal fluid in the regulation of pituitary function. Other chapters consider the importance of cerebrospinal fluid as a route for the hypothalamic regulation of pituitary function. This book discusses as well the available information concerning the neuroendocrine mechanisms involved in the onset of female puberty in primate and subprimate species. The final chapter deals with pineal indole metabolism and its controlling mechanisms as well as information on the interactions of the pineal hormones with neuroendocrine-reproductive axis. This book is a valuable resource for pharmacologists, research workers, and students.

Book excerpt: This issue of Neuroendocrine Perspectives, Volume 9, begins with a fascinating aspect of neurobiology: the steroid control of vertebrate behavior, in this case aggressive behavior. In the first chapter, Schlinger and Callard, after an extensive historical perspective of the behavioral effects of steroid hormones, review results of their own and others' laboratories on the hormonal basis of individual and sex-related differences in the intensity ofaggressive displays in birds. These studies provide evidence that brain aromatase exerts considerable control over both sex-dependent and individual differences in aggressive behavior by controllingestrogenreceptoroccupancyinsteroid-sensitivebrainregions. A greatdeal ofattention has been devoted to psychological, socio economic and cultural factors as potential causes of drug abuse and dependence, whereas the information on the neurobiologic effects of drugs of abuse is rather scanty. Wand and Froehlich address this topic in an exhaustive chapter on the effects of ethanol on the release, synthesis and posttranslational processing of hypothalamo-hypophyseal hormones. In addition, in keeping with neurophysiological and epidemiological evidence of a genetic susceptibility to alcohol addiction, they present data to indicate how the neuroendocrine system may function as a marker for genetic susceptibility to ethanol addition.

Book excerpt: Neuroendocrine Perspectives, Volume 7, is part of an international book series designed to keep clinicians and researchers appraised of important trends and new data in basic and clinical neuroendocrinology. It focuses on four very rapidly evolving major topics: - the role of dopaminergic regulation of the intermediate pituitary lobe in elucidating intracellular signal transaction pathways and other regulatory mechanisms involved in transsynaptic regulation of peptide biosynthesis, post-translational processing, and hormone secretion; - the physiological and clinical implications of corticotropin releasing factor for such areas as diagnosing Cushing's syndrome, defining the hypothalamic and pituitary origins of secondary adrenal insufficiency, and distinguishing Cushing's syndrome from psychiatric states associated with hypercortisolism; - the large number of neurotrophic factors that affect CNS neurons and of neurite promoting factors that modulate neuronal performance, with emphasis on their mechanisms of action and their possible therapeutic applications to peripheral neuropathies and central diseases; - and the many factors that regulate changes in female reproductive cycles during middle age, with careful distinction between neuroendocrine and ovarian components and special attention to the possible cause-and-effect relationship within the cascade of events resulting in acyclicity and infertility.

Book excerpt: In the first section of this volume, we have attempted to bring together some of the papers that reflect exciting new areas of development in relation to neuroendocrine investigation. Very recently, specific nucleotide recognition sequences for thyroid hormones, steroid hormones and the fundamental intracellular regulator, cyclic AMP, have been determined. In this section, the preliminary characterization and investigation of the nuclear binding proteins that mediate the actions of cAMP are described. Not only does this represent an important advance in cell biology, but it may represent a further level of alteration in control in normal and disease states. Intercellular pituitary "cross talk" is well described in the in vitro setting. The active molecules are clearly It is now important able to exert significant actions at the subnanomolar level. to design experiments in order to define the precise physiological relevance of these novel and potentially important observations. Paracrine and autocrine cellular interactions are of established importance in growth control in a variety of body tissues. But it is only very recently that the investigation of normal and abnormal anterior pituitary growth has reached the forefront of neuroendocrine research. This is perhaps surprising, beause the inhibitory effects of doapmine agonism on lactotroph growth and differentiation have been appreciated for some time. The anterior pituitary gland produces numerous growth factors that exert a variety of functional effects on pituitary hormone synthesis and release.

Book Multiple Origins of Sex Differences in Brain

Download or read book Multiple Origins of Sex Differences in Brain written by Donald W Pfaff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-26 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In theoretical terms, sex differences in brains and behaviors of laboratory animals offer the possibility of fascinating scientific studies on a range of molecular phenomena such as genomic imprinting, DNA methylation, chromatin protein modification, non-coding DNA, potentially resulting in important neuroanatomical and neurochemical sex differences in the brain. Such sex differences could arise consequent to exposures to testosterone early in development, or to other effects deriving from the Y chromosome. However, this general subject has been treated with much hyperbole. Historically, sex differences were assumed to be present where they did not really exist, e.g. with respect to mathematics, executive leadership, etc. etc. Under what circumstances do we really care about sex differences in brain and behavior? These circumstances concern human maladies whose diagnoses are much different between boys and girls, or between women and men. Prominent examples discussed in this volume include autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. In fact, infant boys are more susceptible than infant girls to a variety of disorders that arise early in development. This volume then ends with a consideration of effects of estrogenic hormones on the injured brain, and their roles as protective agents.

Book Perspectives on Behavioral Medicine

Download or read book Perspectives on Behavioral Medicine written by Redford B. Williams and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives on Behavioral Medicine, Volume 2: Neuroendocrine Control and Behavior provides a selective overview of important recent developments in the neurosciences related to neuroendocrine control mechanisms which have important implications for major areas of interest in behavioral medicine. The book begins with a general introductory chapter that presents a synthesis of related developments in the biomedicai and behavioral sciences which have played an important role in the emergence of the field of behavioral medicine, with particular emphasis on developments in behavioral biology concerned with neuroendocrine control. The remaining chapters are organized into two parts. Part I provides an introduction to recent developments concerning neuroendocrine control, as well as a consideration of general implications of such developments for the stress field. Part II shows how the integrative efforts of the first section might be applied toward improving our understanding of the role of behavioral and psychosocial factors in several specific illnesses.

Book Pioneers in Neuroendocrinology

Download or read book Pioneers in Neuroendocrinology written by Joseph Meites and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the middle and late 1960s, when it was clear that neuroendocrinology was established as a discipline in its own right, it occurred to us that auto biographical accounts of the pioneer work in this field by the major par ticipants would provide a highly interesting and informative account of his tory in the making. With the death of G. W. Harris in late 1971, and the loss thereby of an outstanding pioneer and personality in neuroendocri nology, it appeared to us to be even more urgent to undertake such a ven ture and collect as many stories as possible. The three of us agreed that initially we would limit our invitations to the senior investigators whose re search careers lay mostly behind them, with the hope that if this venture proved successful, we could ask younger and still very active researchers in neuroendocrinology to contribute to a subsequent volume. Most of those invited to write for this book agreed to do so, but regrettably there remain some notable absentees. The authors were requested to write a personal, and even idiosyncratic, account of the steps taken, and the motivation and drive that led them to develop their interest in the relationship between the brain and the endocrine system.
