As such, it provides neuroscience with a highly effective tool to develop our understanding of brain function, connectivity and plasticity. Increasingly sophisticated neuroimaging technologies have enabled the expanding field of music neuroscience to reveal how musical experience, perception and cognition may support neuroplasticity, with important implications for the rehabilitation and assessment of those with acquired brain injuries and neurodegenerative conditions. Other studies have indicated the potential for music to support arousal, attention and emotional regulation, suggesting therapeutic applications for conditions including ADHD, PTSD, autism, learning disorders and mood disorders. In common with neuroscience, the music therapy profession has advanced significantly in the past 20 years. Various interventions designed to address functional deficits and health care needs have been developed, alongside standardised behavioural assessments. Historically, music therapy has drawn its evidence base from a number of contrasting theoretical frameworks. Clinicians are now turning to neuroscience, which offers a unifying knowledge base and frame of reference to understand and measure therapeutic interventions from a biomedical perspective. Conversely, neuroscience is becoming more enriched by learning about the neural effects of ‘real world’ clinical applications in music therapy. While neuroscientific imaging methods may provide biomarking evidence for the efficacy of music therapy interventions it also offers important tools to describe time-locked interactive therapy processes and feeds into the emerging field of social neuroscience. Music therapy is bound to the process of creating and experiencing music together in improvisation, listening and reflection. Thus the situated cognition and experience of music developing over time and in differing contexts is of interest in time series data. We encouraged researchers to submit papers illustrating the mutual benefits of dialogue between music therapy and other disciplines important to this field, particularly neuroscience, neurophysiology, and neuropsychology. The current eBook consists of the peer reviewed responses to our call for papers.

Currently there is no cure for AD, though a handful of FDA approved drugs can alleviate AD symptoms. In recent years, several studies have investigated the effectiveness of nonpharmacological treatments, such as music/music therapy, on neuropsychiatric symptoms of AD. However, only a limited number have explored the effectiveness of this modality on the cognitive functioning of AD sufferers. The purpose of this literature review was to summarize empirical studies that investigated the effect of music/music therapy on the cognitive presentation of AD. Findings from 11 empirical articles, including one case study, were analyzed. The results indicated significant improvement in memory, language, spatial-temporal reasoning, psychomotor speed, and cognition. The overall findings suggest cognitive benefit from music/music therapy even when the effect was not statistically significant. These findings yield significant implications for professionals, caregivers, and loved ones who are involved in the care of AD patients, as music interventions can constitute a cost-efficient and helpful adjunct to AD treatments.

One in four people aged 85 and over will have different forms of dementia by the end of the year 2050. However, in the year of 2013, this fatal psychological disease lead to 1.7 million annual deaths, whereas in 1990; there were only 0.8 million deaths per annum due to dementia; which indicates that the rate of affected patients and case fatality rate are increasing gradually. Music therapy is a quick form of non-pharmacological, non-invasive intervention for the rising number of demented patients besides the medical as well as pharmacological intervention. Because these traditional interventions have proven their ineffectiveness and handled to side effects of medicine in demented patients. Nationwide, about 10% of the population, develop dementia at some point in their lives. It is a common form of brain defects which occur due to the ageing process and genetic abnormalities. Approximately half of the entire dementia population is over 85 years old and over. 3% individuals aged between 65-74 years have dementia in 2016; whereas 19% people with this disease aged between 75 - 84 years, which indicates that the percentage of individuals who are getting dementia is proportionate to the gradual increase of their age.
