Download or read book Guidelines for the Design of Footbridges written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intention of fib Bulletin 32 is to present guidelines for the design of footbridges as well as bridges accommodating cyclists and bridleways (equestrian paths). The need for these guidelines comes from the fact that structural engineers designing footbridges currently have to spend considerable time and energy collecting information from numerous documents, codes and recommendations to make design decisions. There seems to be no international document dedicated solely to the design of footbridges. These guidelines attempt to provide a concentrated source of information regarding all design issues specific to footbridges. It is meant to be a 'liberal' document in the sense that it promotes new, innovative and bold yet prudent designs by sharing the experience of the authors, summarizing specifications given in codes, and presenting a collection of examples of well-designed structures or structural details from around the world. It is not intended to be an international code that specifies limits and admissible values, thus encouraging timid, conservative designs that are repetitions of approved and tested designs. Indeed, it may be the very fact that no international code exists specifically for footbridges that encourages the wide variety of footbridge designs found today. It should be noted that numerous guidelines, codes and books have been published on bridge design in general. Information given in those publications that is also applicable to footbridges is not repeated in Bulletin 32. The chapters of these guidelines all follow the same pattern: an introduction to the subject, general guidelines as well as do's and don'ts; a summary of information found in existing international codes, recommendations, experience of the authors, and built examples with comparison and comments on this information; examples. Plenty of illustrations and photographs help to visualize the themes of this work. The last chapter, 'Case Studies', contains footbridges each with a short summary of main structural data and references for further reading.

Download or read book State Estimation for Dynamic Systems written by Felix L. Chernousko and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-11-09 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State Estimation for Dynamic Systems presents the state of the art in this field and discusses a new method of state estimation. The method makes it possible to obtain optimal two-sided ellipsoidal bounds for reachable sets of linear and nonlinear control systems with discrete and continuous time. The practical stability of dynamic systems subjected to disturbances can be analyzed, and two-sided estimates in optimal control and differential games can be obtained. The method described in the book also permits guaranteed state estimation (filtering) for dynamic systems in the presence of external disturbances and observation errors. Numerical algorithms for state estimation and optimal control, as well as a number of applications and examples, are presented. The book will be an excellent reference for researchers and engineers working in applied mathematics, control theory, and system analysis. It will also appeal to pure and applied mathematicians, control engineers, and computer programmers.
Download or read book Active Control of Bidirectional Structural Vibration written by Wen Yu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-05 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on safeguarding civil structures and residents from natural hazards such as earthquakes through the use of active control. It proposes novel proportional-derivative (PD) and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers, as well as discrete-time sliding mode controllers (DSMCs) for the vibration control of structures involving nonlinearities. Fuzzy logic techniques are used to compensate for nonlinearities. The first part of the book addresses modelling and feedback control in inelastic structures and presents a design for PD/PID controllers. In the second part, classical PD/PID and type-2 fuzzy control techniques are combined to compensate for uncertainties in the structures of buildings. The methodology for tuning the gains of PD/PID is obtained using Lyapunov stability theory, and the system’s stability is verified. Lastly, the book puts forward a DSMC design that does not require system parameters, allowing it to be more flexibly applied. All program codes used in the paper are presented in a MATLAB®/Simulink® environment. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to mechanical and civil engineers, and to advanced undergraduate and graduate engineering students in the areas of structural engineering, structural vibration, and advanced control.
