Book Multinational Firms Innovation and Productivity

Download or read book Multinational Firms Innovation and Productivity written by D. Castellani and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book assumes an original place in the literature. . . Castellani and Zanfei show that the economic impact of MNEs on innovation and productivity depends on evolutionary features of firms and industries, particularly on the heterogeneity of firm strategies and behaviours. . . this volume contains high-quality, well-written research. . . Simona Iammarino, Research Policy . . . this book offers the reader a well-written and very comprehensive analysis on the link between innovation and internalization which leads to insights into firm heterogeneity. The authors have succeeded in synthesizing the vast body of theoretical and empirical research and given an up-to-date overview of the various issues involved. This is then complemented with their own research findings. . . The book will undoubtedly enrich the debate on the behavior and impact of MNEs. Yama Temouri, Journal of International Business Studies Davide Castellani and Antonello Zanfei, two well-known Italian economists, have brought forth an excellent new book. . . I think this book will serve as a starting-point for many interesting studies, both because of its findings and because of its empirical and theoretical rigour. . . the book lays an excellent and empirically well founded foundation that opens the way for what we need most in research on the international innovatory activities and R&D configurations of MNCs: intrafirm data and the study of intrafirm processes, configurations and specific interactions with the host country environment. The book to me is an important step in moving innovation research forward in this direction. . . I am sure that this book will serve as a thought-provoking starting point for many future studies on firms international innovatory activities and therefore recommend it without any reservation. Marcus M. Keupp, Creativity and Innovation Management Castellani and Zanfei have developed an original and comprehensive analysis of the role of multinational firms in the transfer, creation and diffusion of technology. By developing their view of the multinationals as double network institutions , the authors provide new insights on a variety of key issues at the frontier of economics of international production and innovation. This book is thought-provoking, incisive and topical, and should be required reading for both economists and policymakers alike. Rajneesh Narula, University of Reading, UK Castellani and Zanfei present an in-depth theoretical and empirical analysis of the key issues underpinning the relationship between innovation and multinationality. This book is strongly-recommended reading for any researcher working on innovation or multinationality or the interface between the two. Grazia Ietto-Gillies, London South Bank University, UK This book gets to the root of how and why multinational firms differ in the cross-border creation, transfer and diffusion of technology, and provides fresh evidence on the effects that these differences have on productivity and innovation in the economic systems in which they are active. Davide Castellani and Antonello Zanfei consider multinationals as heterogeneous institutions that combine internal networks of subsidiaries with external networks of collaborative linkages, to bridge different economic and innovation systems. They examine heterogeneity in productivity and innovative behaviour between multinational and national firms, as well as across and within multinationals. The authors argue that not every foreign firm is a good source of externality, and not every domestic firm is equally well placed to benefit from multinationals. It is shown that spillovers from multinationals differ according to the technological profiles, embeddedness and linkage creation of both foreign and domestic firms active in local markets. The book supports this view with empirical evidence based on illustrative case studies, and on econometric analysis using extensive firm-level datasets on multinati

Book Innovation in Technology Alliance Networks

Download or read book Innovation in Technology Alliance Networks written by Charmianne E. A. V. Lemmens and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: However, the author presents evidence that by pursuing a block membership strategy under conditions of cumulative or disruptive technological change, innovative performance can be improved. She also reveals that, when compared to their non-member counterparts, firms in alliance blocks are likely to apply for more patents, hold more central positions in the network, have larger revenues and undertake more R & D intensive research. In addition, they are also inclined to originate from an Asian background. This is the first book to propose a well-developed theoretical framework, supported by empirical evidence, to explain alliance block formation processes and their effect on innovative performance. As such, it fills a substantial gap in the literature on competitive rivalry among alliances, an increasingly important area of research.

Book Impact of Network Relational and Structural Embeddedness on Firm s Innovation

Download or read book Impact of Network Relational and Structural Embeddedness on Firm s Innovation written by Khalid Othman AlKuaik and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firms are facing great challenges in the rapidly changing economy of today's world. Therefore, firms have begun searching for new means and ways to innovate in order to stay alive, compete and grow. However, many firms have yet to discover that their embedded network of relations and structures can play a crucial role in their innovation outcomes. As a result, there is growing consensus among innovation scholars that networking and inter-firm collaboration are key strategies in stimulating innovation within firms. This has resulted in a growing body of literature focused on studying the link between innovation performance and firm participation and position in networks. However, there is still disagreement and fragmented results among scholars regarding the optimum firm's network embeddedness configuration for both product and process innovation. Moreover, firms should be aware of the type of network embeddedness configurations that could constrain their innovation performance. This remains unresolved academic and practitioner challenges that require detailed investigation. Furthermore, a limited number of studies have theoretically discussed and empirically tested this research area in the context of emerging economies. This research study addresses the aforementioned challenges and aims to shed light on the relationship between firms' network embeddedness characteristics (i.e. relational embeddedness and structural embeddedness) and their innovation output (i.e. product and process innovation).

Book The MNC as an Externally Embedded Organization

Download or read book The MNC as an Externally Embedded Organization written by Phillip C. Nell and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MNCs have been conceptualized as differentiated networks that, in turn, are embedded in external networks. Previous research has predominantly focused on the embeddedness of established subsidiaries into their local environment, omitting to shed light on the phenomenon of headquarters linkages to the local context which creates embeddedness overlap. We develop a model of why MNCs develop overlapping linkages to local subsidiary networks even if the subsidiaries have grown out of the initial start-up phase. Using detailed information on 168 European subsidiaries, we find that MNCs build and maintain more overlapping network ties when subsidiaries are high performers, hold important resources, operate in turbulent environments, and are closely connected to multinational actors as opposed to purely domestic firms.

Book Innovation and Institutional Embeddedness of Multinational Companies

Download or read book Innovation and Institutional Embeddedness of Multinational Companies written by Martin Heidenreich and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This wonderful volume brings together contributions mainly from the innovation literature, whose findings are in a sense quite familiar, but which in this collection are juxtaposed in such a way as to highlight their common institutional underpinnings. This is very much due to the efforts of the editor, whose insightful introduction and editorial vision brings out several interesting and emerging themes from this collection of papers. I think this volume breaks new ground in highlighting the embeddedness of MNE subsidiaries in multiple contexts, and it will be of considerable interest to scholars engaged with institutional analysis. However, I also believe that researchers interested in regional embeddedness, the geography of innovation, and knowledge management will find new angles to their work in this collected volume.' – Sarianna M. Lundan, University of Bremen, Germany Multinational companies are crucial actors in a global knowledge-based economy, combining the advantages of global and locally coordinated production and innovation strategies with specific regional and national factors. This book questions how MNCs can best exploit institutionally embedded knowledge, explores the utilization of external institutionally embedded knowledge in corporate innovation processes, and addresses the challenges of embeddedness. The expert contributors draw on managerial, economic, geographic and sociological perspectives to explore the essential roles of regional and national knowledge infrastructures and the cultural and political environment of MNCs. They build upon, update, and extend the discussion on the regional and national embeddedness of MNCs with new country case studies and comparative analyses, focussing on the relationship between innovation in companies and regional studies. Significantly, the book also establishes a link between two important debates that have hitherto been largely disconnected: Regional studies and international business studies separately address issues that fall within the scope of the book, but do not provide an integrated analysis of the embeddedness of MNCs. This pathbreaking book goes some way to fill this gap in the literature and as such, will prove invaluable to academics, R&D managers, regional policy makers and students with an interest in international business, business economics, regional studies and organization studies.

Book External Embeddedness of Subsidiaries

Download or read book External Embeddedness of Subsidiaries written by Swantje Hartmann and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the research fields of International Business and International Management it is stated that product innovations are not only developed by headquarters (HQs) but also by foreign subsidiaries. Subsidiaries thereby apply the knowledge they obtain in inter-organizational business relationships with stakeholders like customers, suppliers, competitors, research institutions or governmental organizations. After being finished, product innovations are either exclusively employed by the creative subsidiaries or they are also transferred in intra-organizational business relationships to other units of the MNC, i. e. HQs or other subsidiaries. This book deals with both the product innovation process in foreign subsidiaries and the innovation transfer process to other units of the MNC. Using the example of the pharmaceutical industry it demonstrates which stakeholders affect the development of a product innovation. For the first time, stakeholders, business relationships and knowledge flows are analyzed at each stage of the product innovation process. The study proves that during the innovation process different stakeholders - other than the often analyzed customers and suppliers - play a crucial role for the foreign subsidiary. Above that, the book depicts the sophisticated structures and processes that MNCs in the pharmaceutical industry have established to transfer the newly created product innovations within their companies. The book addresses researchers and students in the fields of International, Strategic or Innovation Management that are interested in inter-organizational and intra-organizational embeddedness and knowledge flows of MNCs. It is also helpful for managers to control product innovation and transfer processes and the related business relationships and knowledge flows.

Book Managing the Embedded Multinational

Download or read book Managing the Embedded Multinational written by Mats Forsgren and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is based on an extensive dataset and a very well documented case study. Such a wealth of empirical material provides an ideal ground to test theories and enables the authors to elaborate interesting conceptualisations of some specific aspects of the broader network approach, particularly concerning the internationalisation of business networks. Anna Spadavecchia, Business History Combined with recent advances in network analysis [the book] can be instrumental in advancing our understanding, which will not only be useful for research scholars, but also provide practical guidance for managers. . . It is full of ideas which seem like deceptively simple black stones that in the hands of a skillful artisan can be turned into dazzling diamonds. Charles Dhanaraj, Journal of International Business Studies The work by Forsgren et al. offers a major contribution in terms of the analytical power of network relationships. By shifting to an exchange based perspective, they challenge the classical view of organizational power and control, but also the sources of organizational capabilities. They argue that the distinct capabilities and resources of the organization are developed through relationships and connections. Wilhelm Barner-Rasmussen, Rebecca Piekkari, Joanna Scott-Kennel and Catherine Welch, Academy of Management Perspectives An interesting and insightful book. It questions a lot of traditional thinking about international firms and the way they operate. Throughout the book, the reader is invited to develop a different perspective. This perspective might be called a relationships and networks theory of the firm. While this may sound familiar, the book goes well beyond anything I have seen in the existing literature, in terms of conceptualizing relationships and networks and in using this perspective to guide and interpret case study and survey research results. William G. Egelhoff, Fordham University, US It is now well accepted in the academic literature that the multinational corporation can be usefully modelled as a network of relationships. But it is less well-known that the origins of this perspective can be traced back to work done in Uppsala, Sweden, in the 1970s and 1980s. The term business network was first used there, and many important ideas around power and influence have also emerged from this research centre. In this new book, three of the key members of the Uppsala school develop a synthesis of the more recent ideas to come out of their research on networks. By focusing on the concept of the embedded multinational they show how the internal networks of the multinational interact with the web of external networks each subsidiary unit has in its local market. This book provides a definitive and compelling point of view of the importance of networking thinking to the study of the multinational corporation. It is an important book, and it will be widely cited in years to come. Julian Birkinshaw, London Business School, UK Forsgren, Holm, and Johanson have been among the leaders in developing the idea of the multinational firm as a network that spans different country environments. This perspective cautions the easy prescription that a multinational firm can do everything easily, if it just has the right organizational form. Relationships matter, as do the legitimacy of the firm in the context of its foreign investments. This book provides rich case insights into these dimensions. Bruce Kogut, INSEAD, France This book expands the business network view on managerial issues in multinational corporations. Specifically, it scrutinises the importance of a subsidiary s external and internal business network for its strategic and organizational role within the corporation. The internationalisation of firms in terms of management issues and headquarters control, the influence of subsidiaries on decisions and learning processes within multinational corporations are examined in detail. It is argued that

Book Network Embeddedness

Download or read book Network Embeddedness written by Milena Ratajczak-Mrozek and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systematizes the concepts of business relationships and network embeddedness, taking a new approach to internationalization, relevant for the global economy. It reflects the growing importance of network internationalization theory and explores the impact of embeddedness in domestic and foreign relationships on a company’s performance. The author questions the validity of the distinction between domestic and foreign activity of companies and demonstrates that in the B2B market, there are actually no exclusively domestic companies which are not directly or indirectly connected with foreign entities. Chapters cover both small to medium sized enterprises and large multinational corporations, presenting a qualitative analysis of over 400 companies including case studies from the IT and furniture industries. This informative study will provide useful insight for academics and students of business and management, international business and organization studies.

The micro case studies illustrate the interaction between institutional change and the industrial development of China in transition. It also attempts to fill the information gap through an analysis of the typical institutional factors leading to the development and upgrading of industrial clusters, and provides a better understanding of the changing nature of the public-private interface in the process of cluster development in China.

Book Location of International Business Activities

Download or read book Location of International Business Activities written by Academy of International Business . and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years an extensive range of new research has been revisiting the topic of the location of international business activities, from a variety of different perspectives and background interests. This work has been inspired in part by two apparently quite different but actually related contemporary trends: on the one hand, an emergence or revitalization of clusters of activities co-located in or around selected global city regions or fast growing metropolitan areas; and on the other hand, an increased global dispersion of activities conducted within the value chains managed or coordinated by many large multinational enterprises and their business partners. The former trend has given rise to discussions of how the elite of the cultural-cognitive economy of the 21st century (in Allen Scott's terminology) or the creative class (Richard Florida's term) are now being drawn or brought back to major urban centers; while the latter trend is associated with debates over outsourcing, and the economic and social consequences of shifts in the ownership and location of distinct nodes of value chains once production systems become more fragmented and the component parts of such systems become more geographically dispersed. An increased interest in the subject of international business location has been shown by scholars in Strategic Management, in Economic Geography, and in Regional Science, as well as in our own interdisciplinary field of International Business Studies. However, as is often the case in academic research communities, these bodies of scholarship have tended to develop at something of a distance from one another, each conversing internally more than they have with one another. Location of International Business Activities aims to promote a greater conversation between those interested in the topic of Location from various different backgrounds or starting points. The articles are taken from a special issue on the theme of the Multinational in Geographic Space which was published by The Journal of International Business Studies in 2013.

Book Managing the Contemporary Multinational

Download or read book Managing the Contemporary Multinational written by Ulf Andersson and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing the Contemporary Multinational explores the role of headquarters in different structures of multinational firms and shows how this role is affected by the complexity of contemporary research. This topical book illustrates that contemporary research has added complexity to the attributes of the multinational, with implications for the role of headquarters. It examines claims that subsidiaries contribute to the overall competitiveness of the corporation, that they are organized in corporate networks spanning country borders, and that they depend upon specific relationships in the external network. It is stressed that headquarters knowledge of the multinational and its business environment is crucial, but also problematic. The eminent contributors question whether headquarters have become more or less important given the complexity of contemporary research, and argue that the answer to this question depends on the theoretical foundation adopted in the multinational. Based on empirical studies, this invaluable book will be a captivating read for students and researchers interested in international business and international management.
