Within network studies, network connectivity plays an important role in a myriad of applications. The diversity of application areas has spurred numerous connectivity measures, each designed for some specific tasks. Depending on the complexity of connectivity measures, the computational cost of calculating the connectivity score can vary significantly. Moreover, the complexity of the connectivity would predominantly affect the hardness of connectivity optimization, which is a fundamental problem for network connectivity studies. This book presents a thorough study in network connectivity, including its concepts, computation, and optimization. Specifically, a unified connectivity measure model will be introduced to unveil the commonality among existing connectivity measures. For the connectivity computation aspect, the authors introduce the connectivity tracking problems and present several effective connectivity inference frameworks under different network settings. Taking the connectivity optimization perspective, the book analyzes the problem theoretically and introduces an approximation framework to effectively optimize the network connectivity. Lastly, the book discusses the new research frontiers and directions to explore for network connectivity studies. This book is an accessible introduction to the study of connectivity in complex networks. In most cases, the IEDN remains a closed Layer-2 network to maintain a highly available and secure environment that IBM can support. Therefore, when connecting to the IEDN, Layer-3 routed connectivity is still the preferred method. However, now the zBX top-of-rack (TOR) switches support Layer-2 switched connections that can provide an easier migration path when moving data center workloads to the zBX environment. This paper includes a brief introduction to the IEDN architecture and configuration and how these types of connections work. It also introduces the zBX architecture and explains the implications that network connections can have on the redundancy and high availability setup for this system. Finally, this paper provides concrete examples for connecting the IEDN and external data network through zBX for both Layer-3 routed and Layer-2 switched connection configuration options. This paper is intended for network architects and network administrators who are responsible for designing and implementing zBX network configurations. Improving rural connectivity is a concern not only of local level government, but also those agencies responsible for national, state and other transport network levels. In view of ESCAP’s historical involvement in regional transport agreements, the Ministerial Conference on Transport at its third session in 2016 mandated the ESCAP secretariat to develop a policy framework to improve rural transport connectivity to these regional networks. Against this background, this publication aims to stimulate a wider discussion on what governments can do to enhance rural transport connectivity to higher level networks, and in doing so, thereby make their rural transport networks more effective conduits for socioeconomic development. The study has provided a conceptual framework for rural transport connectivity, described the concepts about the “vertical” connectivity, rural transport connectivity within planning and policy frameworks, the concept of hierarchy from "Growth Point" to "Rural Hub", rural infrastructure connectivity policies, institutional aspects and the concept of integrating connectivity into the investment prioritization process as well as the need for measuring and monitoring rural transport connectivity. Book excerpt: This handbook describes methods for processing and analyzing functional connectivity Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fcMRI) data using the CONN toolbox, a popular freely-available functional connectivity analysis software. Content description [excerpt from introduction] The first section (fMRI minimal preprocessing pipeline) describes standard and advanced preprocessing steps in fcMRI. These steps are aimed at correcting or minimizing the influence of well-known factors affecting the quality of functional and anatomical MRI data, including effects arising from subject motion within the scanner, temporal and spatial image distortions due to the sequential nature of the scanning acquisition protocol, and inhomogeneities in the scanner magnetic field, as well as anatomical differences among subjects. Even after these conventional preprocessing steps, the measured blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal often still contains a considerable amount of noise from a combination of physiological effects, outliers, and residual subject-motion factors. If unaccounted for, these factors would introduce very strong and noticeable biases in all functional connectivity measures. The second section (fMRI denoising pipeline) describes standard and advanced denoising procedures in CONN that are used to characterize and remove the effect of these residual non-neural noise sources. Functional connectivity Magnetic Resonance Imaging studies attempt to quantify the level of functional integration across different brain areas. The third section (functional connectivity measures) describes a representative set of functional connectivity measures available in CONN, each focusing on different indicators of functional integration, including seed-based connectivity measures, ROI-to-ROI measures, graph theoretical approaches, network-based measures, and dynamic connectivity measures. Second-level analyses allow researchers to make inferences about properties of groups or populations, by generalizing from the observations of only a subset of subjects in a study. The fourth section (General Linear Model) describes the mathematics behind the General Linear Model (GLM), the approach used in CONN for all second-level analyses of functional connectivity measures. The description includes GLM model definition, parameter estimation, and hypothesis testing framework, as well as several practical examples and general guidelines aimed at helping researchers use this method to answer their specific research questions. The last section (cluster-level inferences) details several approaches implemented in CONN that allow researchers to make meaningful inferences from their second-level analysis results while providing appropriate family-wise error control (FWEC), whether in the context of voxel-based measures, such as when studying properties of seed-based maps across multiple subjects, or in the context of ROI-to-ROI measures, such as when studying properties of ROI-to-ROI connectivity matrices across multiple subjects.
