Book excerpt: Since its introduction in the year 2000 by Ahlswede et al., the network coding paradigm has revolutionized the way we understand information flows in networks. Traditionally, information transmitted in a communication network was treated as a commodity in a transportation network, much like cars on highways or fluids in pipes. This approach, however, fails to capture the very nature of information, which in contrast to material goods, can be coded and decoded. The network coding techniques take full advantage of the inherent properties of information, and allow the nodes in a network, not only to store and forward, but also to "mix", i.e., encode, their received data. This approach was shown to result in a substantial throughput gain over the traditional routing and tree packing techniques. In this dissertation, we study applications of network coding for guarantying reliable and secure information transmission in networks with compromised edges. First, we investigate the construction of robust network codes for achieving network resilience against link failures. We focus on the practical important case of unicast networks with non-uniform edge capacities where a single link can fail at a time. We demonstrate that these networks exhibit unique structural properties when they are minimal, i.e., when they do not contain redundant edges. Based on this structure, we prove that robust linear network codes exist for these networks over GF(2), and devise an efficient algorithm to construct them. Second, we consider the problem of securing a multicast network against an eavesdropper that can intercept the packets on a limited number of network links. We recast this problem as a network generalization of the classical wiretap channel of Type II introduced by Ozarow and Wyner in 1984. In particular, we demonstrate that perfect secrecy can be achieved by using the Ozarow-Wyner scheme of coset coding at the source, on top of the implemented network code. Consequently, we transparently recover important results available in the literature on secure network coding. We also derive new bounds on the required secure code alphabet size and an algorithm for code construction. In the last part of this dissertation, we study the connection between index coding, network coding, and matroid linear representation. We devise a reduction from the index coding problem to the network coding problem, implying that in the linear case these two problems are equivalent. We also present a second reduction from the matroid linear representability problem to index coding, and therefore, to network coding. The latter reduction establishes a strong connection between matroid theory and network coding theory. These two reductions are then used to construct special instances of the index coding problem where vector linear codes outperform scalar linear ones, and where non-linear encoding is needed to achieve the optimal number of transmission. Thereby, we provide a counterexample to a related conjecture in the literature and demonstrate the benefits of vector linear codes.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Error correcting codes have been studied extensively over the past half century in a variety of theoretical and practical contexts, most recently making their way into networking applications. This thesis focuses on two types of codes, identifying codes and rateless codes, and their applications in sensor and peer-to-peer networks. Intuitively, an identifying code is a set of vertices in a graph with the property that each vertex neighborhood in the graph has a unique intersection with the code. The identifying code problem involves finding the smallest identifying code for a given graph, and its general form has been shown to be NP-complete. We begin by drawing a reduction between the identifying codes problem and the well-studied set cover problem. The reduction is efficient enough to provide a general polynomial time approximation with tight performance guarantees for arbitrary directed graphs. Specifically, we provide a general hardness of approximation result, and demonstrate an algorithm that attains this bound within a small constant. We further generalize these results to robust identifying codes, whose identification property survives corruptions in the underlying graph, by linking them to the set multi-cover problem. We develop distributed as well as branch-and-bound novel algorithms for generating robust identifying codes. Finally, we study bounds on the number of disjoint identifying codes, a general problem motivated by considerations of energy balancing in sensor networks. In the second section of this work we consider the use of rateless codes within the context of maintaining fairness in a peer-to-peer network. Our architecture is designed to help overcome asymmetries in upload/download speeds that are typical in end-user dialup, broadband and cellular connections. By sharing encoded file data, users at remote locations can access information stored on their home computers, through multiple intermediaries, at rates often exceeding their home connection's upload capacity. We prove that our sharing approach guarantees two key properties: (i) asymptotic fairness, in that (even malicious) users are assigned idle bandwidth proportionally to their contributed bandwidth; and (ii) natural incentive to join and cooperate fairly in the system.

However, its applicability to networks with resource constrained nodes, like Body Area Networks (BANs), has been questioned due to its complexity requirements. Proposed NC implementations are based on high-end CPUs and GPUs, consuming hundreds of Watts, without providing enough insight about its energy requirements. As more and more mobile devices, sensors and other low power systems are used in modern communication protocols, a highly efficient and optimized implementation of NC is required. In this work, an effort is made to bridge NC theory with ultra low power applications. For this reason, an energy-scalable, low power accelerator is designed in order to explore the minimum energy requirements of NC. Based on post-layout simulation results using a TSMC 65nm process, the proposed encoder consumes 22.15 uW at 0.4V, achieving a processing throughput of 80 MB/s. These numbers reveal that NC can indeed be incorporated into resource constrained networks with battery-operated or even energy scavenging nodes. Apart from the hardware design, a new partial packet recovery mechanism based on NC, called PPRNC, is proposed. PPRNC exploits information contained in partial packets, similarly to existing Hybrid-ARQ schemes, but with a PHY-agnostic approach. Minimization of the number of retransmitted packets saves transmission energy and results in higher total network throughput, making PPRNC an attractive candidate for energy constrained networks, such as BANs, as well as modern, high-speed wireless mesh networks. The proposed mechanism is analyzed and implemented using commercial development boards, validating its ability to extract information contained from partial packets.
