Book Young Adult Drinking Styles

Download or read book Young Adult Drinking Styles written by Dominic Conroy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-30 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together cutting-edge contemporary research and discussion concerning drinking practices among young adults (individuals aged approximately 18-30 years old). Its chapters showcase an interdisciplinary range of perspectives from psychology, sociology, criminology, geography, public health and social policy. The contributors address themes including how identity becomes involved in young adult drinking practices; issues relating to the non-consumption of alcohol within friendship groups; and the role of social context, religious and ethnic orientation, gender identity, and social media use. In doing so, they highlight changing trends in alcohol consumption among young people, which have seen notably fewer young adults consuming alcohol over the last two decades. In acknowledging the complex nature of drinking styles among young adults, the contributors to this collection eschew traditional understandings of young adult drinking which can pathologise and generalise. They advocate instead for an inclusive approach, as demonstrated in the wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, cultural perspectives, methods and international settings represented in this book, in order to better understand the economic, socio-cultural and pharmacological crossroads at which we now stand. This book will appeal in particular to researchers, theorists, practitioners and policy makers working in the alcohol and drugs field, public health and health psychology, in addition to students and researchers from across the social sciences.

Book Youth Drinking Cultures

Download or read book Youth Drinking Cultures written by Margaretha Järvinen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can 'binge drinking' be explained and understood? Is alcohol consumption related to the particular cultural characteristics of some European countries? Should heavy drinking cultures be seen as a mainstream youth phenomenon or as marginal - and is this different in different countries? A team of leading researchers addresses these questions and more in their analysis of the alcohol consumption patterns of European young people. Alcohol consumption is an important marker of transition from childhood to early adulthood, yet the timing, intensity and purpose of adolescent drinking varies dramatically between countries. The contributors provide cross-national comparisons to investigate how drinking behaviour varies, examining factors such as gender, societal context and family socio-economic backgrounds. Youth Drinking Cultures offers a comprehensive set of perspectives on adolescent drinking in Europe. In linking issues around social identity and the life-course with a highly topical area of media and policy concern, the book will be of great value to sociology and social policy scholars, especially youth researchers, and also to professionals working with young people.

Book International Handbook on Alcohol and Culture

Download or read book International Handbook on Alcohol and Culture written by Dwight B. Heath and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1995-09-30 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first authoritative guide to how the world drinks, this reference details alcohol use in different countries and cultures. Variation is striking, with alcohol sometimes a food, a sacrament, a symbol, a tool, a tranquilizer, a medicine, a love potion, or an object of scorn—often with very different meanings and uses in a single country. This volume reveals multicultural and ethnic beliefs, practices, and attitudes about drinking around the world. An extensive introduction discusses the close link between alcohol and culture and provides a foundation for the rest of the book. Each of the following chapters is written by an expert contributor and discusses alcohol and culture in a particular country. Chapters discuss historical trends, drinking among ethnic and religious minorities, national policies, and social outcomes. Countries range from industrial nations known for their alcohol research, to developing nations and to places famous for drinking. A concluding chapter highlights important similarities and differences.

Book Holland Paradise or Hell

Download or read book Holland Paradise or Hell written by Dewanand and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-02-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a slice of cheese between both of their teeth, two Dutch homosexuals passionately embrace while walking through the dunes – with tulips in the hair and laughing loudly for having remembered a sexual adventure in the attic room of a Hague windmill. Does this sentence from the first chapter illustrate the reality of living in the Netherlands? Is the native Dutchman living in an organized paradise or in a high tech Hell, at the present time? Are the wild Dutch women looking for the best man for a sex adventure or are they the romantic experts of global quality? Are the homeless Dutchmen experimenting the whole day with the newest narcotic laws? And how do the gassed Muslims live? The rather ambitious Hindu writer Dewanand describes why living in Holland is a Hell on one hand and is like living in a paradise on the other, from a personal viewpoint, after a turbulent integration of twenty years. Book Alcohol Advertising and Young People s Drinking

Download or read book Alcohol Advertising and Young People s Drinking written by B. Gunter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-10-13 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is widespread and growing concern about the use of alcohol in society, especially by young people. Although overall volumes of alcohol consumption may be levelling off, the occurrences of excessive or 'binge' drinking, especially among teenagers and young adults, are increasingly commonplace. Tackling irresponsible drinking, which is linked to other antisocial behaviour and health problems, has focused attention on the promotion of alcohol by its producers as an important causal factor. This has led to calls for tougher regulation of alcohol marketing, including restrictions on where it can occur and the form it is allowed to take. Empirical research evidence, often emanating from government funded enquiries and endorsed by health lobbies, has been cited in support of an allegedly primary role played by advertising in triggering interest in and the onset of alcohol consumption among young people and in encouraging regular and heavy drinking. Close examination of this evidence, however, reveals that the research is not always as cut and dried as it may first appear. Methodological weaknesses abound in studies of the purported effects of alcohol advertising and other forms of marketing and the significance specifically of advertising as an agent that shapes young people's alcohol consumption could be weaker than often thought. This book sets out a review and critique of the evidence on alcohol advertising and marketing effects on young people and considers this evidence in relation to codes of advertising and marketing practice.

Download or read book Drinking in Context written by Gerry Stimson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drinking beverage alcohol is a widespread source of individual and social pleasure in most countries around the world. Yet, some drinking patterns can lead to serious physical, mental, and social harms. Drinking in Context is intended to complement existing volumes dealing with international alcohol policy by focusing on three main themes: drinking patterns, targeted interventions, and partnership development. An understanding that patterns of drinking are important predictors of outcomes has led to a growing realization that alcohol policies and prevention strategies need to focus on excessive or irresponsible drinking. As a result, there has been a shift towards interventions that address the targeted reduction of harm. These approaches recognize socio-cultural differences and avoid trying to impose a one-size-fits-all solution. In this context, multi-stakeholder partnerships offer an excellent opportunity to promote the complex mix of measures required by each society. Shared responsibilities lead to shared solutions.

Book A public health perspective on zero and low alcohol beverages Brief 10 2023

Download or read book A public health perspective on zero and low alcohol beverages Brief 10 2023 written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2023-04-11 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an expanding market of no- and low-alcohol beverages (NoLos). However, their effects on global ethanol consumption and overall public health are still in question. Concerns have been raised about the impact of NoLos in reducing alcohol consumption and its associated harm and the possible drawbacks and implications, such as misleading minors, pregnant women, abstainers or those seeking to stop drinking about their actual ethanol content. There are also concerns about the impact of NoLo branded products being displayed close to the brand’s main alcoholic beverages and their potential to normalize alcohol consumption. There is a need to monitor their consumption and impact on aggregated alcohol consumption to understand the public health implications of NoLos. The alcohol by volume content of NoLos must be defined, harmonised and clearly labelled.

Alcohol use, both problematic and not, can be understood at many levels – from basic biological systems through to global public health interventions.
